Another one for the BackEngine Supper Series! Had the chance to bring together GTM & CS leaders in SoMa last night for an delicious dinner. Depth of conversation made it one of the most energizing yet.

What stood out wasn’t just the setting (sitting outside in SF in February still feels like cheating), but a different flavor of AI conversation than we’ve heard elsewhere. A few themes that kept surfacing:

 • Teams keep experimenting with how to use AI in their GTM motions and core product workflows. The conversation has shifted from “should we try this?” to “how fast can we iterate safely at scale?”

 • As companies move upmarket, infrastructure becomes the constraint and the enabler. Enterprise complexity changes everything about how AI actually gets deployed across post-sales.

 • “Execution intelligence” only works if the data layer is flexible. The most forward teams want to choose their tools freely, pipe them into a shared foundation, and build workflows on top without locking themselves in.

A moment that stuck with me was when Brent shared how his company went from being AI-averse to fully embracing it across their org, with BackEngine now a core part of their stack. Always humbling to hear how teams evolve once the right infrastructure is in place.

Our belief keeps getting reinforced: execution intelligence is only possible because of the foundation beneath it. When the infrastructure is right, visibility improves, teams move faster, and leaders can trust what’s happening across accounts.

In New York for our BackEngine Supper Series, we had dear friends & new faces join us at Freeman's. Kristi Faltorusso co-hosted and made what could be just a business dinner so much richer.

Big question with AI now seems to be build vs. buy. Surprisingly this room seemed to be more in favor of buying. While building is fun, the work doesn't end there and there is no shortage of work already on our plates, as everyone is trying to do more with less. We also talked a lot about:

 • Core human skills needed to support accounts
 • What does it actually mean to have the right context and high confidence when presenting new insights
 • Sharing what hill you would die on - had to be there...

Our belief that a company's own customer data is one of the most unique and valuable assets a company has remains. And yet, getting the right data to the right customer is a very, very challenging puzzle. But when the infrastructure is right, visibility improves, teams get smarter, and leaders be more effective.

Customer Success leaders should fear surprises.
The investors sure do.

When we diligence and back a company, we underwrite a story about retention, expansion, and durable customer value. We have to believe the revenue base is real, repeatable, and compounding.

Then months later, something doesn’t line up (even after discounting the forecast). A renewal slips that was forecasted as certain. Churn shows up where risk was supposedly low. From the outside, it looks like a sudden performance issue. From the inside, it was a visibility failure.

This is why surprises in Customer Success are so costly at the board level. They compress reaction time and erode confidence in the operating narrative. By the time risk is visible in metrics, it’s often too late to change the outcome.
That’s the thread behind this session with operators who’ve seen these breakdowns repeatedly across hiring, onboarding, and execution.
