HVI has been a family-owned and operated company since 2001. In 2020, Caleb stepped in on a truck and worked part-time at night and on the weekends to learn what it took to run the company from an operational and business standpoint. Caleb has started and sold his small businesses, so his experience as a young entrepreneur transfers over to his role at HVI.

- Caleb oversees ongoing business operations within the company. 
- Jobsite crews and office staff report directly to Caleb. 
- Caleb is reporting directly to the CEO.

Currently, Caleb oversees close to 20 employees and 7 service crews.

Chief Operating Officer

- Directing the day to day operations. 
- Directing 6-7 crews, fleet vehicles, and managing 12-14 people.
- Online job bidding and estimating. Proficient in several construction softwares.
- Fielding all company / customer calls and emails.
- Assisting in recruiting new employees, fielding resumes to the CEO
- Running advertising ads across platforms. 
Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and web platforms.
- Overseeing the Hydro Excavation division; invoicing, billing, vendors, and health & safety program.
- Daily, weekly, and quarterly reports for various organizations. Such as DOT, FMSCA, and various Unions.

- In 4 months, I have assisted in hiring, onboarding, and training 2 full-time crews. 
- Bringing in an additional 50-100k gross per month. 

- In 6 months, I completely took over bidding/estimating. 
- Largely contributing to the 400% increase in net income for the company.

"Architects don't make models anymore" ...

Is crap ... let me tell you why. 

AI is coming to change everything. 

Renderings, drawings, models, videos.

If it's digital, it's getting easier and easier to create. 

The era of instant visualization is not far away. 

Where does that leave physical models? 

Higher Value. 

Architects CAN make models. 
Architects DO make models.
Architects SHOULD make models. 

Don't get me wrong. They are expensive, and time consuming. 

BUT they give a real sense of space, time, and scale. 

Digital assets just can't do that. 

Do you still build models? 

Maybe you should start.

10 simple questions to ask yourself for a low-carbon design. 

1. Does this building need to be built?
		No - Great, you just saved the planet.
		Yes - Move on to question 2.

2. Does this building need to be built this big?
		No - Build what you need and nothing more.
		Yes - Move to question 3. 

3. Is there an existing building we could use instead?
		No - Let's try and build the best new building we can.
		Yes - Renovated buildings reduce embodied carbon by up to 70%

4. Can we use a biogenic material as our structure?
		No - Focus on less material and lower impact materials.
		Yes - Stick frame and mass timber are great structural options

5. Can the building be designed to come apart?
		No - Concrete is the worst material for disassembly. 
		Yes - Steel and Mass Timber should be bolted for disassembly

6. Can we fully electrify the heating & cooling systems?
		No - Maximize energy efficiency through passive system design
		Yes - Heat pumps will reduce your energy use by 3x's

7. Can we reduce our mechanical system size?
		No - Large mechanical systems are expensive to operate long-term
		Yes - Use south-facing glazing and passive ventilation 

8. Can we specify biogenic insulation and cladding materials
		No - Find the lowest impact insulation materials. Try EPS over XPS
		Yes - Cellulous, hemp, denim, and wool are great insulators

9. Do the users know how to best operate the building?
		No - Make sure users are aware of the passive systems that reduce energy use
		Yes - A great building that isn't operated well destroys the design

10. Can we minimize the impervious site materials?
		No - Large parking and sidewalk areas havea  large impact
		Yes - Grasses and natural areas create carbon sinks

Sustainable building design is complex, but there are some basic questions that will help make the most important decisions.

What is the worst advice you could give a young architect? 

I'll go first:

"Focus on the work in-front of you and don't ask any questions. Everthing you need to learn is right here in the office." 

That may have been true 20 years ago, but it aint true today. 

Advancing your career requires ambition and research outside of your 9-5.

My Story: 

I recently spent some time with a friend of mine who built a new house. 

Shiny new garage with oodles of room for any new woodworking project. 

(To say I'm jealous is an understatement)

BUT - it's a disaster. 

Almost unusable.

Why? 

He thought the new house would help him organize. 

But new space doesn't change us. New space shows us who we are. 

The Lesson:

I've often felt the same way at work. 

The project isn't going where you wanted it too. 

It's easy to blame the project, but that's not the real problem. 

The real problem is me. 

To change things, I need to change me. 

So if you're feeling that you just need a new job or project. 

Take a look in the mirror and pursue personal change.
