My son almost gave me a black eye yesterday. 

I couldn't be happier. 

Both of my kids have been really into baseball ever since the World Series ended. Likely because they don't usually get screen time but they were able to stay up a bit to watch baseball. 

That means they want me to pitch to them every day for at least 10 minutes. 

Yesterday that meant a plastic ball flying into my eye at 100+ mph (might be exaggerating but who's to say?). 

Even though it stung for a good 20 minutes afterwards, my kids still expected me to get up and pitch again lol. 

And I could relate that to getting up after every pitch rejection and pitching again in a B2B sales context, but I won't do that. 

Instead, just wanted to point out that these are the moments that really matter in life. 
Spending time with the kids. 
Having quality time with the wife. 
Observing the Sabbath and resting in the Lord. 

These things don't lead to financial gain. But they're just as important.

I never realized that a company's narrative was so important. Until I started writing for founders who didn't have a well-defined one. 

The thing is, I felt it as an employee too, I just didn't understand it at the time. 

When a startup has a well-defined narrative that the founders are pushing, the company's culture also tends to be well-defined. There's no ambiguity because all the employees are pushing towards the same goal. 

But if the founder doesn't have a specific narrative about the company, whether that be what problem the company is aiming to solve and WHY, then the employees have to deal with the ambiguity, which leads to dwindling pipeline and lower employee morale. 

(side note: if you're planning on working at startups, ambiguity is the NORM. But what I'm suggesting is that ambiguity without ANY direction is harmful. The startups with defined missions and cultures embrace directional ambiguity, not ambiguity for ambiguity's sake)

Some of the best companies that I've worked for have been the ones where it felt like every single person, whether it was 10 employees or 1,000 employees, was contributing to the narrative. Whether you were directly contributing to the literal foundation of the company or you were just another cog making the machine go. 

And once founders realize that, their focus should shift into fixing their narratives. 

Make it as clear as humanly possible. 

That's how you build a sustainable company culture and a healthy pipeline.

If you're a founder, you need to be at the forefront of shaping your company's narrative. 

Sounds obvious, I know. But a lot of the founders that I've worked with set their mission statement from Day 1 and never speak of it again unless it's at an All Hands meeting. 

Meaning only your employees really know what that mission statement is. And it's usually not that applicable to what they're actually working on. 

So if that's the case, how are your GTM teams supposed to spread a coherent message to your prospects? How are they going to be aligned from the top of funnel to close? 

If your mission statement is a forgettable one-liner, odds are your team's eyes gloss over when it's being said. 

And if that's the case, you can bet your bottom that your prospects are also getting a discombobulated onboarding experience. 

So shape your narrative. 
Edit it as your company scales. 
And importantly, share it constantly. Shout it from the rooftops. 

Your team and your customers will thank you.

I flippin love watching masters of their craft teach other people. Specifically musical geniuses. Because to them, the instrument is simply a means of embodying emotion and heart. 

It's a method of delivery. 

The same can be said of writing. If the ultimate goal of writing is a simple means to an end, then we don't spend the time to hone the craft. We post things that are "good enough" because it doesn't matter in the end. 

But when we view our writing as a craft, we work at it. We perfect it. We obsess over quality and emotion and soul. 

The fact that the heart is missing is probably why LinkedIn feels so stale now. 

Just me?

I'm sure we all agree: 

Negativity for negativity's sake sucks. 

But SO many people rely on negativity to get views on their content. Because apparently, positive vibes aren't as interesting. 

Hopecore content takes 1000x times longer to take off than content that flames, roasts, or otherwise humiliates another. 

Make it make sense.

Context matters. 

Always good to consider the “how and why” your message will land, especially when you’re earlier on in your GTM motion.

Literally the most random thought: 

Whoever did the branding for "blue raspberry" flavor needs a raise. 

Because how is it that when I eat something with the artificial raspberry flavor in it I don't think "this tastes like raspberry"??? It automatically becomes blue raspberry in my brain??? 

Some damn good branding right there.

I'm 30 now. 

Younger me would have thought that I would have met my untimely demise by way of quicksand, black widow spiders, or an avalanche by now. 

Glad that didn't happen.

But does that mean I haven't *lived*??

My only goal in life is to be as happy as my kids are when they see a garbage truck. Pure joy.
