As the Business Head at Ingram Micro India Limited, I was responsible for overseeing the company's own brand initiative, Vesta, which offers a wide range of IT products including Motherboards, UPS, Keyboard, Mouse, PC Cabinets, and Gaming Products.

Under my leadership, Vesta has become a highly profitable business unit, with a nationwide team of sales, marketing, and tech support and over 500 channel partners across India.

My journey with Ingram Micro began as a front salesperson, where I quickly learned the skills of sales management and partner network management, becoming a star sales champion and getting promoted to Branch Manager at the young age of 25.

With my strong Interpersonal and communication skills, I was able to set up a branch from scratch with just Rs. 10,000, and within 18 months, I successfully set up a full-fledged team and a profitable branch.

As the Business Head, I have learned the art of product management and acquired experience in managing the largest component IT business, Intel. I also took the opportunity to drive the Value Added Business lines like IBM Storage, Tandberg Data Storage, and APC UPS and turned out these Product Divisions a profitable proposition for both OEM and Reseller Partners.

Fixing what Tech founders miss out - Brand Strategy, Market Positioning & Unified Messaging | Be remembered, not generic.

In a room full of IT Channel founders, an AI discussion is a given.

That's when I see 3 rough groups emerge.

10% - say they know everything about AI
65% - use it occasionally as a helper
25% - have not started using it at all

But each group has a problem.

The 25% feel overwhelmed.
They do not know where to start.

The 65% use it here and there.
But miss many practical use cases.

The 10% often go too far.
They ask AI for strategic decisions.
And all their content sounds like AI.

First and foremost: AI is not your strategist.
It is your assistant. Think of it as a very capable secretary.

Secondly:
Use it for execution. Based on YOUR strategy and tactics.

Here are common use cases where AI can help accelerate:

Sales:
Draft follow ups. Summarize client calls. Prepare proposal structures.

Marketing:
Content based on your strategy. Research competitor messaging. Draft campaigns.

Operations:
Organize documentation. Summarize support tickets. Generate SOPs.

Finance:
Track invoices. Categorize expenses. Prepare monthly summaries.

HR:

That's what the coach tells the cricketer who seems to have lost form.

Similarly:
Sales exec misses targets:
Manager says go back to basics (pipeline, follow-ups, closing).

Marriage hits a rough patch:
Counselor says go back to basics (listen more, spend time together, appreciate)

Person feeling constantly tired:
Doctor says go back to basics (sleep, water, movement)

The same applies when your business growth is stalling.
Or direction seems to be the issue.

There is no shame in revisiting fundamentals.

These basics should NOT be skipped by any B2B tech founder:

1/ Who do you serve and who do you NOT serve?
2/ Why do your best clients actually choose you?
3/ What ONE outcome do you deliver better than anyone?
4/ Are your offers and next steps very simple & clear?
5/ Does your positioning and messaging come from these answers?

These are in no way sexy.
In fact they are borderline boring.

But they work.

Especially when growth is stuck.
To get founders out of their cocoon.

15 years back, IT Channel founders knew one marketing tactic:

Events.

Three types of founders slowly emerged:

1/ The planners who invested strategically
2/ The pressured ones who went because OEMs covered 70% of the cost
3/ The followers who spent because competitors did

Events are powerful.
But most founders still do not use them wisely.

Last week I spoke to two founders preparing for industry events.

1/ SaaS founder:
Brilliant product.
But wanted to leave behind a 6 page brochure in a 30 second interaction in the hands of founders.
Everything was in it. Except outcomes.

2/ IT Channel founder:
OEM extended their speaking slot from 10 minutes to 25 minutes.
Initially they panicked - “What do we fill the time with?”
Then they made a 45 slide presentation.  😆🤦 

Both had the same problem.

Information overload. No positioning.

Most founders struggle to take advantage of events because of two things:

1/ They do not focus on the audience and the outcomes they care about
2/ They try to cram information instead of telling one clear story

When you send an email or WhatsApp, it is 1 to 1.
If the messaging is weak, one person sees it.

But events are 1 to many.
If your positioning is weak, hundreds see it at once.
Wrong message on stage damages reputation in real time.

Events are not product demos.
They are mass brand exposure.

Your audience does not need every detail.

They need one clear answer:
How do you make my life better?

Get that story right before you step on stage.

Branding is not what you say about yourself.

It is what the market perceives of you and repeats behind you.

The T20 Cricket World Cup is on.

- New Zealand is one of the most respected teams in the world
- Disciplined. Professional. Always competitive
- One of the fittest and best fielding sides

Yet there is one thing people repeat about them:
"They have never won a World Cup."

South Africa has a different label:
"Chokers."

Even when this was a completely different team from when they got the tag. 

And New Zealand winning the match and entering the finals is enough for people to continue giving that moniker to South Africa.

But if NZ does not win the finals, their tag stays.
Maybe they will also be called chokers.

Both teams are incredibly strong.
Both deliver consistently.

Both have strong mindsets.
But reputations stick.

And that is branding.

- Not their cricket board logo
- Not the jersey colors
- Not what they say in press conferences

It is the story people keep telling about you.

The same thing happens in business.

In the IT channel & SaaS world, companies get branded quietly:

- The under-cutters
- The enterprise specialists
- The Government specialists
- The ones who do everything
- They are an Adobe / Microsoft shop

Once that label forms, it is tough to shake it off.

Because branding is built by what the market consistently experiences from you.

Tonight India plays England in the second semi-final.
Both teams are 2 time winners.

By the end of the match, one team will strengthen its story further.
The other will.......

If every match builds a reputation, every deal in your business does the same.

So if you are an IT Channel or SaaS founder, ask yourself:
What story do you want the market repeating about you right now?

Your brand is what your ecosystem thinks of you when you are not in front of them.

Clients. Alliances. Peers.

Yesterday, 9 IT Channel & SaaS founders joined me for our consortium meeting at my office.

It was my turn for taking a session and I decided to make it interactive.

I asked all of them 3 questions.
Most of them had generic answers - as was expected.

Most of the answers were what their competition would have also said.

These were the questions:

1/ What do you do better than others?
2/ Why do your top 5 clients come back to you?
3/ Does your website, profile and LinkedIn say this clearly?

I also shared a framework based on which their positioning & messaging could improve what their ecosystem thought about them.

Over the day today, two founders sent me screenshots.

One of them wanted to fix their website positoning.
One of them asking 3 more questions for getting clarifications.

They wanted to implement it right away.

"Is this positioning clearer?"
"Does this messaging work now?"

That is when you know founders have taken you seriously.

Not just nodding in the session.
Actually putting thoughts at implementing.

That is the difference between founders who grow and founders who stay stuck.

Many B2B tech founders ask me for advice on event presentations.

But only a few take it.

When I tell them "6 slides are enough," they scoff.

Understandable because its the fear of missing out.

"What if I miss mentioning a capability?"
"What if competitors show more?"

What they don't realize is what audiences actually want:

1) Clarity & simplicity
2) What's in it for them
3) Proof

That's it.

Here's the 6-slide structure I recommend (and get scoffed at):

1) Their pain (gaps they live with)
- Can be vertical specific if you are OEM agnostic
- Can be technology specific if you are taggling along with an OEM

2) What's at stake (if they don't take action)
- Board's expectations
- Productivity
- Loss of trust

3) Real proof (someone like them)
- Who you helped
- What was giving them nightmares

4) Transformation (measurable results)
- What is the outcome for that client/s
- How did life improve for them

5) Their future (let them imagine)
- What if their team spent 40% less time on repetitive tasks?
- What if support tickets dropped by 50% even when usage doubled?

6) Lastly, about you (positioning + testimonial/s + Call to action)
- Your positioning line (1 sentence)
- 2-3 proof elements (logos, testimonials etc)
- Clear CTA (1 line with contact method)

No jargon. No features. No years in business.
No wasting everyone's time.

Industry events give you 10-15 minutes to hold the stage.
Stop wasting it on slides your clients are bound to forget.

Make it about THEM.
