Now real leadership starts when you realise your value isn’t in the work you carry, it’s in the team you raise.

This image hit me hard because it reminded me of something my teenage son once told me during an argument, “Will you even try to listen to what *I* have to say… and understand me?”

That one line shook me.
Because we, as parents, so often demand to be understood…
but forget that our children need the same emotional space.

Psychology is clear -
When people feel understood, the brain shifts from 'threat mode' to 'trust mode'.
Defensiveness drops.
Connection rises.
Communication becomes human again.

Whether it’s at home or at work, with teams or teenagers...

Understanding first isn’t being soft. It’s being smart.

We’re all human. 

I often say this to middle managers when talking about senior leaders and executives. They make mistakes too. 

What matters is creating an environment where they’re allowed to own those mistakes and apologise, rather than being ridiculed or expected to be flawless. Lead with humanity.

Leading with humanity means extending that same humanity to our leaders as well.

I don’t usually post things like this, and I went back and forth on whether to share it, but there’s a small lesson in what happened today.

In a car park, a simple parking space turned into a confrontation. Someone had offered me the space, and another driver aggressively tried to take it, shouting, swearing, the whole thing. I just walked away, thinking how quickly people can lose themselves in the moment.

But when I returned to my car, there were flowers on the door and a handwritten note from the same man, apologising for his behaviour.
That part stayed with me, the reflection, the accountability, the choice to own a mistake and make it right.

It reminded me that we all slip up, all react, all have moments we’re not proud of. What matters is what we do afterwards. Kindness and accountability speak louder than anger, and today was a quiet reminder of that.

A small moment, but a big reminder: owning our mistakes matters.

If you "can’t delegate" this one task, read this.

If your team “relies on you for everything”… that’s not a compliment.

I know it feels good at first that you’re needed, you’re trusted.

Seeing people come to you because you’re the reliable one.

But here’s the mirror I hold up for almost every new manager I coach:

When your team brings everything to you, it means they’re not developing.

Not thinking.
Not taking ownership.
Not building confidence.
Not building leadership skills of their own.

And it’s not their fault.

Teams learn what you reward.

> If you reward dependency, they stay dependent.
> If you reward thinking, they rise.

Most managers don’t realise they’ve built the very dynamic they’re frustrated with.

If every road leads back to you…you’re the one who built the map.

Hence, leadership isn’t about being the hero. It’s about building people who don’t need one.

A small moment I witnessed last month that EVERY MANAGER needs to hear about.

I was running a workshop with a team of engineers, loads of talent, but very little confidence.

And one moment in that workshop changed everything, and it lasted less than 20 seconds.

So a junior engineer was presenting an update.
He’d done good work, but you could see the nerves.

And halfway through explaining the issue he’d solved, he paused…thinking… searching for the right words.

Thus, before he could finish, his manager cut in: “It’s alright, let me explain it properly.”

Not in an aggressive or rude tone, but quick. Too quick 🙂

The junior engineer smiled politely. But I watched his shoulders drop, only slightly, but enough.

His voice stayed quiet for the rest of the session. He didn’t share again.

Afterwards, I asked the manager, “Why did you jump in?”

He said, “I was trying to help him out. Didn’t want him to struggle.”

Lovely intention, damaging impact.

This is the mistake so many well-meaning managers make: They step in too early, too often, too quickly.

Not because they’re controlling, but because they care. But caring doesn’t build capability. Space does.

The best leaders I know, let their team think, try, speak, pause, without rushing to rescue them.

That’s how leaders are made.

The biggest difference between a Good Leader vs Great Leader

Something strange happened last week and it reminded me why Emotional Intelligence matters more than any leadership book.

I was coaching a senior project manager.
Brilliant mind, high performer, respected by the organisation.

But something wasn’t working with his team.

People were withdrawn.
Meetings felt tense.
No one challenged him.

He said, “I don’t understand. I’m not rude. I’m not harsh.”
And he wasn’t.

But here’s what I noticed in the session:
He listened with his arms crossed.
He spoke fast.
He rarely let silence settle.
He looked away when something was uncomfortable.

Nothing dramatic. Nothing “wrong.”

But your emotions always show, even when your words behave.

So I asked him,
“How safe do you think people feel being honest with you?”

He paused for a long time. Then whispered, “Not very.”

That moment changed everything for him.

Not because he learned a new skill, but because he finally saw the emotional impact he was having.

Leadership isn’t what you say. It’s what people feel around you.
