How’d I land this internship?

In 2022, my wife and I moved across the country from Provo, Utah to Raleigh, North Carolina. 

I got active on LinkedIn
- started growing my network 
- posted about jobs, tagged TeamWork

Davis Filippell, President of TeamWork Online, sent me a connection request and we exchanged some messages.

1 month later, Davis flew to Charlotte for the Sports Marketing Association Conference. 

He offered to meet at 8am.

I said yes!

I woke up at 5am and drove 3 hours from Raleigh to Charlotte.

You might think I’m crazy 

But those of you that know Davis know that it was worth every minute.

He’s energetic, insightful, and motivating.

I left that meeting inspired 

And with an internship offer 😉

I never played soccer.

I worked in the NWSL in gameday operations for the NC Courage. It helped me land my job at TeamWork Online.

Because the experience built my resume.

It’s good to have a favorite sport.

CAD Software Developer

- Took 25+ macros of a CPU core through a quick synthesis flow to generate a simplified netlist for the ATPG team, expediting time to debug within silicon flow. Collaborated with several PD macro owners to resolve synthesis issues
- Wrote Bash scripts to modify ATPG configurations of every macro to fix bugs and evolve overall flow for future use

Software Engineer Intern

- Modified verilog RTL and TCL scripts to scale up register file entries for performing series of investigative experiments through synthesis flow to analyze the trade-offs of various clock periods on power, leakage, area, and utilization
- Used Vendor tools to investigate and modify route edits to resolve IR/EM violations; Swap transistors with various VT and sizing flavors to resolve timing violations, check in changes into Perforce

Logic and Circuit Design Co-Op

- Utilized Vendor tools/software to estimate potential ATPG coverage before taking block through DFT flow by
constraining values of certain inputs and by adding on-chip-clocks
- Ran simulations for generating DFT RTL, synthesis, and ATPG on blocks and learned how to improve test coverage to at least 99.5%
- Analyzed test/fault coverage using industry standard tools, documented various tool and design related bugs and how to fix them, shared with team

Silicon Engineering Intern

Chamberlain Group (CGI)

- Programmed a LCD display menu of features for commercial garage door operators in embedded C
- Developed timer-to-close features, allowing for the garage door to close after a certain amount of time, door mid-stops, and programmable inputs to open/close the door. Met rapid deadlines & presented features on a weekly basis 
- Collaborated with product engineering and UI/UX teams to modify features to make them more intuitive

Firmware Engineering Spring Co-Op

- Built console app in C# to test various garage door commands for the test automation team, utilizing object orientated programming/paradigm (OOP). Decoded command payloads that use the MQTT network protocol to decipher messages
- Documented test sequences of commands in UML, follow Agile software development, and feature branch model of GitFlow

Firmware Engineering Fall Co-Op

University of Illinois at Chicago

- Answered online student questions about course content, microcontroller or debugging difficulties with ARM/C programming 
- Tutored up to 5 students a week about memory organization, PWM, ADC, interrupt handling, and device interface, digital design

Embedded Systems Tutor

- Developed a display table in HTML and CSS by parsing upcoming calendar events using Google’s Calendar API in node.js
- Programmed back-end side of webpage using node.js, implemented OAuth2 for client token security, utilized express.js framework to render event data to webpage and handlebars npm module to simplify templating
- Demoed 3D & VR environments/examples to showcase capabilities of CAVE2, attended weekly tech meetings to discuss project

Undergraduate Research Assistant (REU)

- Operate laser cutter, vinyl cutter and FDM/PolyJet 3D printers with maximum efficient use of material, fix various design flaws using CorelDraw, ensured safe use of machinery and facilitated student project workflow by recommending optimal methods of 3D printing
- Cut single- & double-sided Printable Circuit Boards (PCBs) using Bantam Tools CNC mill and solder electronic components
- Teach and lead new staff members proper usage of various 3D printers, laser cutting, electronics bench, and vinyl cutting

Research Aide and Technician

- Documented optimal slicing settings and procedures for two-photon polymerization 3D printing using dip-in lithography, 25x magnification lens, and IP-S photoresist resin; demonstrated 25x magnification lens capability to expedite prints while retaining high detail
- Showcased the use of encapsulated ferrofluid as a method to magnetically actuate 3D-printed, 250 μm, box-like structures when exposed to a magnetic field under a probe station; utilized AutoDesk Inventor for design and Nanoscribe GT2 for 3D printing

I am currently a mid level software developer at Microsoft who specializes in developing automation tools for RTL design.

Currently, my interests are in firmware, hardware acceleration, and FPGA/RTL design. My past internship experiences include me writing firmware for commercial door openers, RTL Verilog for hardware blocks, and developing C# applications that communicate with the cloud. I have various experience working with tools from various vendors—Tessent, Synopsys etc

If there is anything I am most proud of, it would be my genuine friends and relationships I made over the years. I believe that the people closest to us shape our identities and influence our lives in profound ways—seeing how compassionate, ambitious, and diligent my friends are makes me feel I am like them too.
