Most people confuse achievements with ability.

Messi played his entire prime in the greatest club side ever assembled. 

Ronaldo played in teams built specifically around him with unlimited budgets.

Maradona dragged Napoli, who were a mid-table Serie A side, to two league titles.

In the most brutal, violent, defensive league in football history.

Where defenders could legally assault you.

Where the pitches looked like ploughed fields.

Where organised crime ran the city, cocaine nearly killed him and he still dominated.

And he did it almost single-handedly.

Then he took an average Argentina squad to a World Cup.

And scored THAT two goal against England, dribbling past an entire team like they were training cones.

With a heavier ball. 
On a worse pitch. 

Against defenders who could two-foot you without a yellow card.

Put Messi or Ronaldo in that era. 

With those teammates. 

On those pitches. 

Against those defenders. 

With zero sports science. 

Zero recovery protocols.

I'm 52 now, and I'm grateful for every single year.

Because not everyone gets this many trips around the sun.

Mates I went to school with didn't.

People who had dreams, families, plans for the future, they didn't get to see them through.

But I'm still here.
Still get to be a father.
Still get to chase my goals.
Still get to wake up next to Alex.
Still get to make a difference.

Yes, the lower back aches when I get out of bed each morning.

The hips and shoulders niggle in the gym most weeks, but I'm still here.

^^^ That's just the cost of admission.

The alternative is not being here at all.

Every grey hair is earned.

Every weight lifted, every lesson learned, every moment with my kids, all of it is borrowed time that I refuse to waste.

Getting old isn't the enemy.

It's the privilege.

I get this a lot.

Here's what people don't understand:

I'm 52. I've been lifting since I was 15. 

That's 37 years of building my physique.

Maintaining muscle is a completely different game to building it.

Once you've built it, it takes a fraction of the effort to keep it.

You see, most blokes think more is better.

More sessions. 
More sets. 
More volume.

And they wonder why at 40+ they're burnt out, banged up, and still don't look like they train.

Two hard sessions a week. 

Proper intensity. 
Proper recovery.

That's it.

I don't need to prove anything to my ego in the gym anymore.

I need to perform in my business, be present with my family, and still look like I know what I'm doing with my shirt off.

That requires training smarter, not harder.

You don't need 5 days in the gym.

You need the right programme, the right effort, and the maturity to let recovery do its job.

It felt like a breakup.

For quite a while now I’ve had Alex Gillibrand  virtually by my side, guiding, supporting, cheerleading and giving me the tools to change my lifestyle, shift my mindset and become a stronger, healthier, more focused version of me.

But like with anything you can be given the tools, the knowledge and the accountability, what you choose to do with it is up to you.

For a while I knew I had stopped prioritising myself.

The excuses started creeping in, and the longer it went on the more unhappy I felt in myself.

I originally followed Alex on here, and every post she shared seemed to resonate, especially the idea of finding what works for your individual reality.

Because whilst we all technically have the same 24 hours in a day not one of us has the same 24 hours.
