Let’s be honest: most B2B content is boring AF. 

It’s often general statements and regurgitated info and basic definitions, wrapped in faux authoritative lingo. 

Before you pull out your pitchfork, let me clarify: this isn’t entirely, or even mostly, the fault of content marketers. Content teams face high publishing cadences and lead gen expectations, low bandwidth and budgets, with little leeway to lean on leadership, partners, and customers. (Not to mention peanut gallery questions like “can we optimize this?” and “can we make this go viral?”) 

All of that, if you’re not careful, can lead to an “it’s good enough” mindset.  

This mindset affects the reader—and in turn your pipeline. But it also diminishes the role of content marketing within a company. 

Content marketers can be storytellers and interpreters. They’re not just here to serve lead gen. They’re here to make their customers and audience the stars of the show. To do that, they can’t be relegated to keyword research and ill-conceived gated assets.

Content marketing: where you have either 2 or 20 hours of work in a day, depending on if your boss opened the Google Doc or that partner approved the proposal or the demand gen team greenlit the campaign brief.

GenAI like "okay, I will use a human voice to write like a human. Excellent idea."

As they tumult and sputter and dance

I've never built a sales team.
I've never presented to the board.
I've never trained custom AI models.
I've never set up a paid ad campaign.
I've never created a skills training program.
I've never improved PLG using product analytics.
I've never designed commercial properties with BIM.
I've never set up the infrastructure for omnichannel marketing.

And yet the Beam Team has written, authoritatively and extensively, on all of these topics this past year. 

How?

We spent quality time with subject-matter experts—you know, the folks who HAVE done those things. The people who know their shit.

Sometimes it was the leadership team.

Sometimes it was the technical IC.

Sometimes it was the customer.

Sometimes it was the partner.

Sometimes it was the community.

As content marketers, we can: 

(a) spin our wheels and pretend we know what we're talking about,
(b) ask AI to spin its wheels and pretend it knows what it's talking about, or 
(c) take time to talk to people who actually know what they're talking about.

It's the difference between "this content is bullshit" and "this content is the shit."

As community-led, creator-led, product-led, and AI-led growth all converge in 2026—taking time with the experts is going to be a big differentiator.

After talking to hundreds of GTM pros, I’ve realized there are three types of people in any organization:

1. People who 
send slack 
Messages like This,

2. People who send Slack messages like this, and 

3. People who say "We use Microsoft Teams (sorry, I know)"

I thought this was an interesting blip on the media landscape: 

CBS News garnered 50k views in under 24 hours on this full Mamdani speech on TikTok. Comparitively, they see less than 500k in-demo weekly viewers. 

(It’s a stretch to say all 50k viewers are in-demo, but given the targeting power of social, not a big one.) 

Everyone’s talking about AI, but I think one of the most fascinating things to watch is the slow change of old media, from NYT’s digital push to Getty’s licensing deals. 

Since I should probably tie this back to B2B, all this shows me is that what people have been saying is true: it’s time to partner with creators, it’s time to give prospects specifics instead of platitudes, it’s time work with customers on more “how” content, because the generalities from the talking heads won’t cut it anymore. 

(And it’s time to turn the volume up. :)

I got into marketing because I liked writing. Now it's time to get back to that, at least sometimes.

I wish more marketers said this out loud 📣 :

Most of the C-suite doesn’t actually understand marketing.

They understand operations, finance, product, sales, and the mechanics of running a company. But they don’t see the layers behind what we do. They see assets. We see the system that creates demand, authority, and relevance.

This week, one of my clients and I mapped an industry research report. Fresh data. A clear POV. Insight the market hasn’t seen before. Something that lets them lead conversations instead of reacting to them.

The CEO’s response was, “Why don’t you use ChatGPT to come up with the content?”

Moments like that show how wide the gap is. 

Leadership believes content appears from a prompt. They don’t see the research, the analysis, the interviews, the judgment calls, or the strategic lift that shapes work worth publishing.

And whether we like it or not, it’s our job as marketers to make the value visible:
- Show the strategic why behind the work
- Tie every initiative to business outcomes
- Educate on what AI can’t replace
- Build the internal narrative as much as the external one

Because if we don’t do that, the gap widens.
And marketing keeps getting treated like a cost center instead of the revenue engine it actually is.

Gratitude.

Maybe it’s the Thanksgiving energy, maybe it’s the fact that this year stretched me in all the right ways (and tested every limit 🫠), but I’ve been thinking a lot about how lucky I am to work with the people I do.

I grew a lot this year — as a strategist, as a writer, and as a business owner. That growth came from the people I worked with and the projects they trusted me to take on. This year’s client roster pushed me, challenged me, and made my work better.

People keep asking: “How do we rank in AI search?”
Wrong question.

Better question: Can an LLM even use your content?

Most content is so structurally messy that ChatGPT looks at it and goes, “Yeah, I’ll cite somebody else.”

GEO is a workflow. And workflow isn’t sexy.
It’s discipline. Boundaries. Telling chaos “no.”

If you want to show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, your content needs to be parsable, chunkable, and quotable.

Not nicer writing. Not longer writing. Structured writing.

The shift looks like this:

1) Start GEO at the brief. If you don’t define the question, the content can’t win.

2) Map brief → publish. Not vibes. Not Slack threads. A real sequence with owners.

3) Format how LLMs read. One idea per section. Clear headers. FAQs. Steps. If it can’t be pulled, it won’t be surfaced.

4) Review for clarity + technical visibility. Test your draft in ChatGPT. See what actually comes back.

5) Link your sh*t. If you don’t show connections, the model won’t infer them.

6) Track visibility over time. Models change weekly. If you’re not watching, you’re invisible.

Also, curious: Where does it break down on your team: briefs, handoffs, formatting, linking, or leadership still thinking SEO = keywords? 🤔

Everyone wants “AI visibility.” Most are approaching it incorrectly.

Semrush’s latest data (via Leigh McKenzie) about where models actually pull information makes this pretty obvious:
- Wikipedia is the top-cited source in 4 of 5 industries
- Reddit appears in 176% of ChatGPT answers in finance
- In tech, G2 is cited more often than vendor sites

So while brands are polishing hero copy and adding another paragraph to the About page, models are referencing… the comment sections.

This is where GEO and AEO stop being buzzwords and start being the actual work:

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
- Make your content usable by models.
- Structured. Specific. Fact-first.
- If the model can’t parse it, it won’t cite it. Period.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
- Show up in the places where comparisons happen.
- Reddit. Review platforms. Product discussions.
- If no one is talking about you, the model has no signal to learn from.

The data supports a two-part approach:
1) Mentions: Are people actively comparing you to alternatives?
2) Citations: Does your content give the model something reliable to reuse?

Most teams only optimize one. And then wonder why they’re invisible in AI outputs.

If you want visibility in AI, you need to be part of the conversation and part of the reference material.

So the real question isn't “How do we rank in AI search?”

It’s "Does the internet know who we are?" and "Can a model actually use what we publish?"

And for most teams, one of those answers is “no.”
