📘 From The Borrowed Mind...

Humans have feet, but the wheel took us farther than walking could ever carry us.

Humans have hands, but the hammer built more structures than our fingers could ever count.

Humans have a brain, but the large language models used by artificial intelligence move faster and connect more disparate concepts than our brains could ever manage on their own.

Contained within these pages are my thoughts about the single most important technological transformation in the history of humanity. I do not believe we fully understand the role thought plays in our lives. When we think, we create a path forward, whether we are cooking dinner or helping our children with homework. Thought is the fabric of reality.

What unsettles us about artificial intelligence is not that it may one day think like us, but that it already speaks with the confidence of thought, without ever having lived one. Large language models do not think the way we do. They do not think at all, not in any sense we would recognize. They process and generate language that mirrors the shape of human reasoning without sharing its source. What comes out resembles thought the way a shadow resembles the object casting it.

I have started calling this anti-intelligence. Not stupidity or failure, but a kind of cognitive inversion. It's fluency without understanding, coherence without experience. Understanding this difference is foundational to everything else in this book.

Human cognition and machine computation operate along different axes entirely. They meet only in a narrow corridor where both can project something the other recognizes. That corridor is often language. Learning to navigate it well without confusing the projection for the source may be the central cognitive challenge of our time.
