Not three finalists. Not a deck of options with rationale. One.

Most agencies hand the hardest part back to you. Here's a shortlist, now you decide. They mean well. But you hired someone because you couldn't decide. You've been carrying this thing for months. Sometimes years.

So I do the deciding. Or rather, the process does.

I’m sayin’ it. 
The coaching industry is addicted to marketing.

Funnels.
Content calendars.
Personal brands.
Lead magnets.
Pricing psychology.

Coaches can diagram a nurture sequence in detail, but when they try to describe their offer, the language flops.

Most are trained to sell before they are trained to build. They generate demand for something that has never been structurally defined. Then they compensate by refining hooks, rewriting bios, fussing with positioning, and raising prices in an attempt to signal “premium.”

Sometimes these tactics work — for a time.

They convert.
The launch fills up.
Revenue spikes.

But an offer with no clear progression, no named mechanism, and no defined transformation creates “explanation fatigue.”

That’s an architecture issue.

The coaches marketing skill is visible. The offer construction usually isn’t.

When the experience relies heavily on the coach’s presence and live explanations, “articulation drift” sets in. 

Authority that rests solely in a person and not in a structure is fragile.
Authority grows, stabilizes, and solidifies when language architecture is deliberate.

This is where a language bottleneck occurs.

This is where expertise outgrows language.

This is where a Signature Language System™ becomes infrastructure.

He didn't have an offer statement.
He had a LinkedIn About section.
Carefully written and genuinely impressive.

But the six pieces that make an offer work were scattered like clues in a scavenger hunt.

Some clear. Some implied. Some missing.
Before we spoke, I pulled it together.
His words into a six-part framework. 
Five of the six parts held up.

But the differentiator — the one that answers "Why you and not someone else" — was vague. Implied, not stated.

Present in his head, cloudy on the page.

When he saw the breakdown on screen, he said,
"You're right. I have a differentiator. I'm just not conveying it clearly enough."

That sentence is worth a lot of money.

Because his differentiator — he actually has two — was something his competitors lacked.
 
The fix wasn't cosmetic. We just didn't polish some language.
We found the element creating the most drag, named what was true about him, and rebuilt the statement around it.

By the end of the session he had a tighter offer, a revised LinkedIn headline and, more importantly, a clearer answer to the question every buyer asks, “Why you?”

That's what the Offer Statement Pressure Test does.

Naming Your Big Fears

You've built something powerful.
But when someone asks what you do, your explanation takes longer than it should. And the words don't match the value of the work. You've tried to fix this yourself. And paid people to fix it. Nothing works.

That's not a you problem. That's a language problem.

Your offer, results, and proof are real. But no one ever built your language system to deliver it all. 

The first experience any potential buyer has with you, your brand, or your offer is the words used to describe it. Before they see your results, experience your process, know anything about you — they read.

Your program name, headline, offer description, About section. That first read is where they decide to stop or scroll past.

Most experts never engineered their language for that first read. It was written once under deadline, borrowed from a competitor, generated by AI, or cobbled together over time. It's an accident. And accidental language produces a predictable result: the buyer leaves before they ever discover what you do. I call that a First Read Failure — and it's the single most common reason great offers stay invisible.

That makes you an Invisible Expert.

You're not unknown because you're unqualified. You're under-recognized because your language was never engineered to carry what you built. First Read Failure is almost always the reason why.

The fix isn't better copy. It's Language Architecture — the complete language system behind your offer: Naming, positioning, messaging. Designed together and created to work together, so every word carries the weight of what you've built.

My grandfather Joe showed me what language failure actually costs.

Smart man. Accomplished. Experienced. He received a letter from the government, and while it was technically correct, it was written for the institution that sent it, not for him. It made him feel stupid. He wasn't. The language just never considered him.

That moment planted something in me. When language fails, the reader pays the price. Every role I've held since — in journalism, marketing, user experience (UX), PR, and executive communications — ran on the same instinct: Strip away everything blocking the real message. UX writing sharpened it most. Thousands of real interactions. Language tested daily against how people truly respond, not how we hoped they would.

Everyone wants transparent pricing when they're buying something.

And yet most consultants hide their own pricing away behind forms or discovery calls or convoluted proposals.

When I see a lack of pricing, I don't think "ooh how cool and alluring"

I think, "well these guys are just trying to see how much money they can squeeze out of me"

And most buyers think the same.

The vast majority want to be able to gather ALL the info about your offer before they ever actually speak to you.

Gating your pricing stops them doing that.

That's why transparency is so important. 
Because transparency = trust. 
And trust = sales.

BUT...

There are some pre-requisites before you go ahead and just stick a number up on your site.

Firstly - it's super important that you actually clearly communicate the value of your offer. How you frame it will determine whether that price puts people off or is the final piece of the puzzle for them.

So if you are NOT clearly communicating the value (eg. outlining the pains, diagnosing the problem, showing the process, explaining the deliverables and outcomes) then you should NOT put your pricing out there.

You should work on packaging and framing your offer first.

But let's say you have communicated the value. Then the next question to ask is: "Do you have a standardised process and deliverables?"

If the answer is no - and that your offer can flex in different ways - then you can't put a fixed price. But what you can (and should) do is put a range or starting price.

Even something like "sprints start at 10k" is better than no pricing.

But let's say you have communicated the value and have a standardised offer? Then the final question is "Are you targeting one clear target client?"

If no, then you might be dealing with different budgets or levels of complexity based on who comes knocking. And so a fixed price is hard to get right.

In that case you should stick with a range or starting price.

But if you manage to nail the holy trinity of:

a) clearly communicating value
b) standardising your offer
c) aiming at one target client

then you should absolutely go ahead and put a FIXED price on your site or other marketing/sales assets.

Here's the nuance that LinkedIn hates: You should definitely publish your pricing. But ONLY if you earn the right to do so. Otherwise it'll backfire.

So who's going to take the plunge?

PS. some people who are great at transparent pricing are Anthony and Rob from Fletch, Marcel from Parakeeto (who even has a cool pricing calc), and Kelly who is wonderfully transparent (with her pricing, she's not a ghost).

The one thing worse than hiding your pricing?

Teasing your pricing and then not following through...

Agency website translation guide:

"We take a bespoke approach" → We have no process

"We're passionate about results" → We don't have any

"We work with ambitious brands" → We work with anyone conscious

"Our team of experts" → One overworked founder and a freelancer in another timezone

"We'd love to jump on a quick call to find out more" → We can't explain what we do in writing

"We believe in building long-term partnerships" → Please don't leave us

"We're currently at capacity but..." → We're not at capacity

"Trusted by leading brands" → We did one project for a company you've heard of in 2019

You're welcome.

I guarantee this is going to change how you think about guarantees.

There's a bit of a consensus in the offer design world (esp. thanks to Hormozi) that you should always offer some form of guarantee.

Think: "Money back in 60 days or we'll refund you."

Or: "We'll keep working with you until you hit your revenue goal."

Or: "We promise to 10x your revenue within one week of working together."

The idea is that a guarantee helps to reduce any risk around your offer. It gives your clients a get-out clause if things don't work as effectively as they'd like them to.

On the surface it sounds great.

But here's why I think they do more harm than good...

Firstly, let's look at the bad types of guarantee. These fall into two buckets: unrealistic and uncontrollable.

Unrealistic guarantees are things that you clearly can't genuinely promise. Things like "triple your revenue in one month". And even IF you can deliver that kind of result, it's so unrealistic that prospects aren't going to believe it.

Uncontrollable guarantees are things that are out of your jurisdiction. Like if you're an SEO consultant and you claim to "increase sales in two months or your money back". What if the product's crap? What if they're bad at selling it? You can't control the outcome so you can't guarantee it.

But I know you're going to say, "Joe, you're just cherry-picking the bad ones" and that's true to an extent. It's called hyperbole.

So let's look at a good (on paper at least) guarantee. Something like:

"If we don't generate twice as many leads in the next quarter we'll work for free until we do."

It's at least slightly realistic. It's within their control as a lead gen agency.

But here's what you don't realise: this still invites more skepticism. The opposite of what you're trying to do.

If I say "don't think of an elephant" you think of an elephant. If I say don't worry about the risk, you start worrying about the risk.

Guarantees often just signpost the fact that any engagement is a risk. They invite that extra skepticism.

A much more effective solution is to NOT NEED THEM in the first place.

And you do this by building trust to a high-enough level before you ever make the ask. Use content to show your expertise. Use testimonials and results to establish credibility.

Make it so that you're the obvious choice and you won't need those guarantees to sweeten the deal.

Hiding your pricing isn't sexy and mysterious. It's a red flag.

I hear the justifications all the time.

"We keep pricing off the site to filter out tyre kickers." 
"Our work is too bespoke to put a number on." 
"People need to understand the value before they see the cost."

All reasonable from the inside. All quietly catastrophic from the outside.

Because here's what your buyer is actually thinking when they land on your site and find nothing:

"What am I getting into?"

Not "wow, this must be premium." 

Not "I'd better book a call to find out more." 

Just a low-level unease that makes clicking away very, very easy.

Every signal of opacity maps to a buyer distrust trigger. No pricing means unpredictable cost. No process means unpredictable experience. "Let's chat to explore fit" means an hour of their time before they know if you're even in the right ballpark.

75% of B2B buyers now want to research and decide without ever talking to sales. They're not going to wait for your call. They're going to find someone who makes it easy.

The consultants hiding behind "bespoke" aren't protecting themselves from bad clients. They're accidentally screening out good ones.

Transparency isn't exposure, it's confidence. Showing your pricing, your process, your timeline. That's not giving anything away. That's removing the friction that kills deals before they start.

When did you last look at your offer through a buyer's eyes?

Hiding your pricing is costing you clients. You just can't see it happening.

69% of buyers said "lack of transparent pricing" was the most frustrating thing about B2B purchases.

In other words, the majority of buyers want to see at least some indication of how much your offer's going to cost them.

So think about what happens when they visit your site and there's no pricing indicators...

These potential clients will visit your site, look around a bit, and then think:

"I can't see any pricing so I'm probably just gonna look elsewhere or figure it out myself."

And they'll disappear.

But the key thing here is that you - the consultant in question - will have no idea that ever happened.

It's a silent majority of prospects who now expect to see pricing and disappear when they don't.

That's the hidden opportunity cost of hiding your pricing.

The question is - what are you going to do about it?

I'll be honest there aren't many newsletters that I actually read but I was instantly hooked by Linda Hafstad's latest one.

Especially the bit in the image below.

Because she absolutely nails why buyability is so super-duper important...

A client came to me recently with a problem I see all the time.

Their offer wasn't landing. Calls were happening, proposals were going out, and nothing was converting.

The frustrating thing? The actual offer was solid. Clear deliverables, reasonable timeline, transparent pricing. The Decisive stuff was genuinely done well.

The problem was Desired and Different were a mess.

Their problem description was vague enough to apply to half the internet. Their solution sounded like every other agency doing similar work... competent, professional, unremarkable.

So we dug into the actual job-to-be-done. Not the service. The outcome the buyer was really hiring them to deliver. The specific situation they were trying to escape.

Once we had that, we reframed the whole offer around it. Then we leaned into the one thing their solution consistently did that the conventional alternative couldn't. That specific weakness in the standard approach became the centre of everything.

The new framing went live. Content landed differently. Conversations started with people who already got it.

Not because the work changed. Because the offer finally explained itself.

If your pipeline is quiet, check Decisive first. But don't assume that's the whole problem.

Hey there seems to be this label on the outside of the jar that I'm in and I can't read it. Can anyone help?

Are you actually buyable? Let's find out.

For each question, score yourself 1 (nope), 2 (sort of) or 3 (absolutely yes).

DESIRED: Can buyers see themselves in your problem?

→ Can you describe the problem you solve in one sentence your client would use themselves? 

→ Would your ideal client read your homepage and think "that's exactly my situation right now"? 

→ Is your problem description specific enough to exclude people it's not for?

DIFFERENT: Can buyers see why you over anyone else?

→ If a buyer Googled three of your competitors, would your approach look meaningfully different? 

→ Can you clearly explain why your solution beats the most obvious alternative? 

→ Would a buyer understand your edge without getting on a call?

DECISIVE: Can buyers actually say yes without a conversation?

→ Does your site tell them what they get, how long it takes, and roughly what it costs? 

→ Could a buyer explain your offer to a colleague after five minutes on your site? 

→ Is there a clear next step that doesn't require them to commit to a sales call?

Add up your score.

21–27: You're in good shape. Minor tweaks at most. 

14–20: Some blockers present. Worth a closer look. 

9–13: You're losing buyers before they ever reach out. 

Under 9: Your offer is actively working against you.
