I’ll never forget the lemonade stand I ran when I was eight years old.

I started life at 44.

Not because I had to. But because something inside me refused to settle.

Last year, I made a checklist. 

Not the cute Pinterest kind. The scary kind.

The “what if I actually go for it?” kind.

Ten things.

And somehow… I ticked them off, one by one. 

→Invited to speak as a keynote
→Featured in places I once only read.
→Wrote stories that outlived the moment.
→Built rooms where women found their voices.
→Standing on stages where I was the audience.

→ All while my kids were building their own wins 
→ All while my husband stood steady beside me. 
→ All while my parents watched, half worried, half proud.

Last week, I stood on stage at Tata AIA Life Insurance 

As the Keynote Speaker

Big room. Sharp suits. Targets. Numbers. Performance charts.

And I began by talking about fear.

You could feel the shift.

Because when you are addressing a room trained to measure success in percentages and projections, vulnerability is not the expected opening slide.

But storytelling is not about polish.

It is about truth.

I told them about the moments we do not post. The drafts we delete. The calls that do not convert. 

The seasons where confidence is borrowed, not owned.

I spoke about how the most powerful leaders are not the ones who perform strength. They are the ones who understand their own turning points.

There was a moment midway through the session where the room went very quiet.

Not distracted quiet. Listening quiet.

That is when I knew I moved from presentation to connection.

After the talk, a senior leader walked up to me and said, “We talk about targets every day. We rarely talk about doubt.”

And that was the point.

Storytelling in leadership is not about theatrics.

It is about giving people permission.

Permission to admit uncertainty. Permission to speak honestly. Permission to lead as humans, not machines.

Real stories build trust faster than perfect slides ever will.

And in rooms that deal with risk, policy, and long term planning, trust is everything.

That keynote was not about storytelling as a skill.

It was about storytelling as courage.

Because the moment a leader shares something real, the entire room exhales.

And that is where influence begins.

Confession: I believed them when they said this.

I remember being told I'd never make money from words.

That's what they said.

With such certainty. Such finality.

As if my dreams had an expiry date and they'd checked it.

I was supposed to get a "real job," play it safe, and ask permission before every decision.

Permission to spend. Permission to dream. Permission to exist on my own terms.

For a while, I believed them.

I dimmed my ambition, questioned my path, and wondered if I was being foolish.

But something inside me refused to settle.

Not arrogance. Not rebellion.

Just a quiet, stubborn belief that I could prove them wrong.

So I kept writing.

Through the doubt. Through the unsolicited advice.

Through the nights when my bank account screamed louder than my confidence.

I wrote when no one was watching.

I wrote when everyone was doubting.

And slowly, the work spoke louder than their warnings.

Today, I travel without asking anyone.

I shop without guilt or justification.

I build a life that's entirely mine  -  no permission slips required.

Not because I got lucky.

Because I trusted myself when no one else did.

The worst advice I ever received became my greatest fuel.

It taught me that other people's limitations don't have to become mine.

That financial independence isn't just about money  -  it's about freedom.

Freedom to choose. Freedom to build. Freedom to live unapologetically.

So if someone's telling you your dreams won't pay the bills, remember this:

Their doubts are not your destiny.

Your belief in yourself is the only vote that counts.

And the life you want? It's not waiting for approval.

It's waiting for you to claim it.

Truth: The best connections aren't planned.

I didn't discover this at a networking event.
Or through a strategic introduction.

It happened during a flight delay.
Two frustrated entrepreneurs.
Bad coffee and missed connections.

We started with complaints.
Moved to stories.
And ended up sharing life lessons.

No business cards were exchanged.
No elevator pitches were delivered.
Just authentic conversations about work, dreams, and failures.

I still remember how naturally it flowed.
How the masks came off.
How laughter replaced formality.

Today, that "random flight buddy" is my biggest referral.

Because real networking isn't about perfect LinkedIn messages or rehearsed introductions.

It's about those unplanned moments.
When you're stuck.
When you're real.
When you're just being human.

The strongest professional bonds aren't built in boardrooms. They're formed when we stop trying to network and start being ourselves.

We had barely completed the first month.

No dramatic campaign. No loud announcement.

Just clean work. Clear communication. No overpromising.

One afternoon I get a message.

“I have introduced you to someone. You should speak.”

No buildup. No warning.

That referral did not come from a viral post.

It came from trust.

When clients feel safe with your integrity, they sell for you.

That is the quiet power no one talks about.

P.S. What is your instant happy?

He booked a call with a hidden agenda

You know the type. Camera slightly tilted. Notebook open. Mildly suspicious energy.

He had already taken a few calls before ours.

You could tell.

Because five minutes in, he said something that made me laugh.

“Everyone else has promised explosive growth, guaranteed virality, and category domination in 90 days.”

Ah yes. The holy trinity of overpromise.

So we did something radical.

→ We cannot guarantee virality.
→ We told him exactly what we 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 do.
→ We cannot manufacture credibility overnight.
→ We cannot build thought leadership on borrowed personality.

But here is what we 𝘤𝘢𝘯 do.

→ We can clarify your thinking.
→ We can sharpen your positioning.
→ We can help you become unmistakable.
→ We can build content that attracts the right rooms instead of noisy applause.

Silence.

Then he said, “This is the first honest call I’ve had.”

Two weeks later, he signed the retainer.

And before the first month even closed, he sent us a referral.

Not because we dazzled him with big words. Not because we sold dreams.

Because integrity feels rare in a market addicted to hype.

Here is what most people forget.

Clients are not looking for magic. They are looking for truth.

They want someone who says, 
“This will take time.” 
“This is realistic.” 
“This is what success will actually look like.”

Integrity is not loud. It does not come with dramatic reels or inflated promises.

It comes with clarity. With simplicity. With clean delivery.

And the funny thing?

Honesty converts faster than manipulation ever will.

You do not need to be the loudest in the room.

The question came from a potential client during our discovery call.

I paused.

Because he was right.

For years, I built my credibility on qualifications, client logos, and case studies.

I thought that's what mattered.

But here's what I've learned through building brands for global leaders:

Nobody remembers your degrees.

They remember your stance.

I've worked with politicians who had every credential imaginable, yet struggled to connect.

And I've worked with entrepreneurs who never finished college but commanded rooms.

The difference?

One group listed achievements.

The other took positions.

When you're clear about what you stand for, people either move toward you or away from you.

Both outcomes are valuable.

Zero digital presence.   

The tragedy?

 She'd pioneered FDA approvals nobody knew about.  

 In 90 days, we changed everything:   

Days 1-30: Repositioned profile from resume to reputation  

Days 31-60: Published strategic thought pieces  

Days 61-90: Engaged with key industry conversations   

Results: 
→ 2 board interview requests 
→ 1 keynote invitation 
→ 4 media inquiries   

We didn't chase opportunities.

Two weeks later he signed.

Not because we closed him.

Because we slowed him down.

Instead of sending a Zoom link and creating friction, I dropped my number.

We spoke immediately. Real conversation. Real clarity.

By the end of that call, he asked for a proposal.

Here's what I learned:

→ Your DMs are your front desk
→ Responsiveness is authority
→ Speed is respect

If I had replied six hours later, it would have been a cold lead.

If I had said "let's schedule something next week," momentum would have died.

Sometimes strategy matters. Sometimes positioning matters.

But sometimes?

It's about being available when opportunity knocks. And about following a challenge on Link Up 😀
