Valuation of a recent 🇮🇹 Italian solar deal genuinely made me stop what I was doing and take a second look.

Zenith  agreed to pay €779k for a 5 MW early-stage project: that’s ~€155k/MW payable at RtB. 🫰 

For context, most comparable Italian transactions we’ve tracked have been in the €70k–€130k/MW range. 💶 

That’s not a small difference.

So I’m asking myself (and the market): Is this a premium asset case, or are RtB valuations in Italy starting to rise?

We spend a lot of time tracking solar pricing and deal structures across Europe, and Italy has been particularly interesting lately.

European gas prices surged today amid escalating Middle East tensions 🌍. QatarEnergy LNG halted LNG production following Iranian drone attacks on key facilities, pushing the benchmark Dutch TTF hub up sharply—up to 45–50% in recent sessions, reaching around €46–56/MWh 📈.

While the trigger is geopolitical, the mechanism is structural: 
Europe still prices a meaningful share of wholesale electricity at the margin with gas, so TTF volatility rapidly propagates into power prices ⚡️.

Key observations on power system behavior:

• Marginal pricing matters more than averages. Wind and solar hit record highs in 2025—30% of EU electricity (841 TWh), overtaking fossil fuels (29%)—yet the last dispatched unit often remains gas-fired during tight periods, turning gas swings into broad power price volatility. Gas generation rose 8% last year (offsetting low hydro), inflating the sector’s import bill to €32 billion (+16%).

• Global LNG competition is embedded in electricity engineering. Europe competes with Asia for spot cargoes during supply disruptions—resulting in abrupt spikes, not smooth adjustments—as seen now.

• Country differences amplify exposure. 
Higher gas-linked fleets transmit shocks more directly, while systems with strong wind/solar shares, firm low-carbon (hydro/nuclear), and robust interconnection dampen impacts.

The takeaway: 
don’t just add more gas or more solar—reduce gas as the marginal unit through:
More clean capacity + firm low-carbon sources
Enhanced flexibility (storage, demand response)
Stronger grids and interconnectors 🔋

This is how an annual-average success becomes week-to-week stability: lower volatility, more predictable costs, and real energy security 🛡️.

Progress is evident, but today’s spike shows the gas–power link endures.

When Japan launches its OHISAMA satellite 🚀, space-based solar power (SBSP) officially moves from theory to orbit—capturing constant sunlight in space and beaming it wirelessly back to Earth as clean, stable energy ⚡

But in 2026, “solar in space” is splitting into two very different paths.

1️⃣ SBSP (OHISAMA-style):
Generate power in orbit → beam it down to Earth.
No night, no weather, no seasons. Up to 8–10× more sunlight than ground PV.
The goal: solve intermittency, land use, and energy security.
Government-backed, milestone-driven, transmission-focused.

2️⃣ SpaceX / Starlink orbital compute:
Generate solar power in orbit → use it in orbit 🤖
Instead of exporting energy, move AI workloads off-planet.
With AI-driven electricity demand surging, the bet is simple: space offers constant sun, passive cooling, and fewer grid constraints.
It’s about relocating demand, not supplying grids.

Same enabler—reusable rockets.
Contrarian strategy—one exports energy to Earth, the other exports compute to space.

So what scales faster in the next 5 years:

The EU edges closer to 80 GWh battery storage milestone 📈  
 
According to SolarPower Europe Europe's latest EU Battery Storage Market Review 2025, the EU installed 27.1 GW of battery storage in 2025, bringing the total capacity to 77.3 GWh. 
 
This marks a tenfold increase from 2021, and the EU must repeat this to #10XBatteryStorage by 2030 in order to meet the bloc's flexibility needs. 
 
"To support EU security and competitiveness, we need a battery fleet capable of supporting a fully flexible, renewable based energy system.” - Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe.

Most financial models in renewable energy are built to detect events.
But real portfolios lose value through drift.

Events are easy to model.

- Price crashes
- Curtailment spikes
- Unexpected degradation
- Interest rate shocks

They are discrete.
Visible.
And they can be stress-tested.

But most portfolios do not lose value through events.

They lose value through drift.

Small, systematic losses that slowly accumulate across the asset base.

A bit of module mismatch.
Some thermal derating in certain operating windows.
Auxiliary consumption slightly above assumptions.
Clipping gaps that remain invisible in aggregated KPIs.

Individually, each looks insignificant.

But together they slowly compress cashflows over decades.

Not dramatically.
Quietly.

Over a 25 year asset life this drift begins to reshape the numbers that investors actually care about:

- Cashflow
- DSCR
- IRR

This is what I call Silent Yield Killers.

We, in Europe keep relearning the same expensive lesson:

Gas dependency is not “energy security.”
It is outsourced risk.

In the first 10 days of the latest crisis, the EU’s fossil import bill rose by an estimated €2.5 billion, while the cost of gas-fired power jumped by more than 50%. 

And the contrast inside Europe is brutal.

In Spain, gas set electricity prices in just 15% of hours this year so far. In Italy, it was 89%. That is the difference between building resilience early and paying for volatility later. 

This is why solar, storage, grids, and electrification matter beyond the climate argument.

They reduce exposure.
They lower chaos.
They make economies harder to shake.
