I will lose no sleep over the death of the Ayotollah. Nor the capture of Maduro, a criminal in need of justice. I actually haven’t been kept up at night lamenting the drug runners who have perished bringing poison to our shores. 

But the damage to our Constitution is heartbreaking. The balance of power in our federal government was deliberate, in our founding documents, set forth by men of wisdom who knew that too much power in one person‘s hands was a dangerous and terrible thing. 

Dear Congress, grow a set.  Exercise your constitutional duty to reign in the constant abuse of power from the executive branch.

If you’re keeping score at home, the U.S. is now in three…THREE…wars.

(1) the never-ending “war on terror” permitted by the 2001 Authorization for the use of Military Force (AUMF). Missile strikes and special ops missions in places across the Middle East and Africa are the modern equaviant to the “front line.” There is literally and figuratively no end in sight to this war, a war that has stretched for one quarter of a century across 5 presidential administrations - both Democrat and Republican.

(2) the “non-international armed conflict” against unnamed and named drug cartels, whose front lines are the boat strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Note: the Trump Admin calls it an armed conflict, though there is no basis in domestic or international law for such a war and it should be properly considered law enforcement…which mean domestic criminal law and human rights law applies, not the laws of war, which means each strike and killed crew member is an act of murder. Note 2: unlike the “war on terror,” this war is illegal under both domestic (constitutional) and International law (which Trump says he doesn’t have to consider). This has been ongoing since September 2025, and DOJ still refuses to publicly explain the legal basis.

(3) the international armed conflict against Iran, begun early this morning. This also has no domestic (constitutional or statutory) authority, and almost certainly violates international law: the UN Charter’s article 2(4) prohibition on the use or threat of force against the political sovereignty and territory of another nation unless in self-defense. But a legal self-defense argument is predicated on the threat being “imminent.” Just because Trump says it was “imminent” doesn’t make it so, just like him saying there’s a “rebellion” in L.A. or an “insurrection” in Chicago doesn’t make it true.

Three wars. Conducted by the guy who said he would not bring the U.S. into any more foreign wars.

Note 3: we also almost went to war over Greenland (territory of our ally, Denmark) with NATO, a collective security treaty organization we are a part of.

Note 4: arguably, we also entered into an international armed conflict with Venezuela when we bombed it while capturing its president and his wife in early January.
