If you only review one number before 2026, make it this one: cost per signed case.

Most firms track leads and impressions, but those don’t pay the bills.

Your cost per signed case (CPSC) tells you what really matters: how efficiently your marketing turns investment into revenue.

Here’s why it matters, and what to do about it:

It exposes inefficiency. If one channel brings cheaper leads but higher signing costs, you’re not optimizing, you’re overspending.

It aligns marketing with intake. You can’t calculate CPSC without clean data from both sides. This forces alignment between marketing and operations.

It guides next year’s budget. You’ll know exactly where to double down, and what to cut, instead of guessing in January.

It builds accountability. When you know your true cost per case, “busy” campaigns stop being acceptable. You start demanding results.

The firms that know their numbers now are the ones that start January with clarity and confidence, not guesswork.

Most law firms (and most agencies running their ads) have no idea which search terms are actually driving their best leads and cases.

We just wrapped an audit for a California-based law firm that is spending $750K/year on Google Ads and found that 0.08% of their search terms - 20 out of more than unique 25,000 searches that they had spent money on - were responsible for nearly half of all conversions (i.e. form fills, live chat leads and phone calls).

That’s the 80/20 principle in action. 

And yet…

Those search terms were scattered across 34 different campaigns and ad groups. Nothing about their campaign and ad group structure + use of match types and negative keywords allowed for precise control of budget, bidding, ad messaging and landing page experience for those "vital few" search terms.

Their conversion tracking was counting Google Business Profile clicks to their website as primary conversion events 😬

Their campaigns had no clear separation between research intent (e.g. "what is CA personal injury law" and hire intent (e.g. "personal injury attorney near me").

Their top county (LA) drove over one-third of conversions - but was lumped in with the entire state

The result?

Google had no consistent and reliable signal to optimize toward, and the firm had no control over where their money went.

If you’re running Google Ads for a law firm, remember:

✅ Optimize your ad campaigns to true lead indicators (calls, forms, chats)
✅ Segment campaigns by intent and geography
✅ Use your search term report to identify your breadwinners
✅ Ensure your campaign structure gives you the ability to control budget and double down on your winners (i.e. top performing search terms, demographics, etc.)

Because growth rarely comes from bigger budgets - it comes from tighter focus. 

Find your vital few. 
Scale those. 
Cut the rest.

Consumers can now use Google LSA's message feature to contact multiple firms at once (“Request multiple opinions”).

And message leads are moving to 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 - cheaper if Google thinks the lead is low intent, more expensive if it’s high intent.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞’𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞:

Be human.

For real: Does anyone care about thank you notes anymore?

Because I still do.

I was chatting with a friend who is an executive and has been applying to jobs over the past year.

She does everything right.
Shows up fully prepared.
Brings her A game every time.
And she always sends a thoughtful thank you note.

Always.

But she almost never hears back directly from her thank you note even when she gets the next interview.

Last week she finally received a reply. One simple line acknowledging her note. And she lit up because it made her feel seen.

That tiny moment of humanity in the seemingly less and less human hiring process.

In a world of applicant tracking systems, masked email addresses, automated scheduling tools, and endless interviews, many candidates no longer even can send a thank you. The system hides the people behind the process.

Yet in every lecture and workshop I teach, I tell candidates that the follow-up is one of the most important things to success in your career.

I still believe the thank you is important. It reveals character. It’s a sign of respect. It builds connection in a process that is often painfully isolating.

But here is the real question I want leaders and hiring teams to think about.
If candidates are putting in the effort to show appreciation, are we creating any space at all to acknowledge it?

Or have we unintentionally designed hiring systems that make everything one sided?

I will always advocate for the thank you note.

But I also believe we owe candidates some humanity in return.

PS: I am happy to report she now has two offers. And yes she is leaning toward the company that replied to her thank you note. A little humanity goes a long way.

I am now matched with a new Little, Dalis, a high school sophomore who dreams of becoming a lawyer. Big dreams deserve a Big mentor.

This is what mentoring looks like in real life. It is one student getting to college. One young person seeing a bigger future. One relationship that changes the trajectory of a life.

I had a video go viral on LinkedIn.

And guess what happened?

Honestly… not much.

Sure, I got a bump in followers. A few days of extra notifications. Some nice comments (and really mean ones, which surprised me for Linkedin). 

But it didn’t change my business or my life or my strategy in any meaningful way.

Why?
Because I wasn’t actually set up for it.

My content wasn’t pointing anywhere. I’m not selling a course or a program or anything widely available. And that video wasn’t even for my ideal audience. It was just a fun piece of content that happened to take off.

And as a marketer, I should have known better than to expect anything different.

Everyone is obsessed with virality.
It’s the number one request in every social meeting. (And a meme to those in the biz) 
“Make it go viral.”
“We need a viral video.”
As if that’s an actual plan.

But after a few of my own videos crossing a million views
And years of running big brand channels where we saw massive numbers
I can tell you this with absolute confidence.

Virality, on its own, does nothing.
If you don’t have a system behind it
If you don’t have a story people can follow
If you don’t have something for them to do next
If you don’t even know what you want that visibility to turn into
Then a viral video is a fleeting moment. 

Fun? Sure.
(Sometimes not so fun once the mean comments come in) 

Impactful? Not unless you’re ready for it.

So here’s my very unsexy advice.
Stop chasing viral without a plan. 

Start building the foundation that makes virality useful.
Because when your house is in order
And a wave of attention hits
That’s when things actually move.
