I have operated Dave Hall Consulting as a global consulting business since 2001, engaged in a mix of roles, including long term embedded contract work, short term advisory roles, hands on technical contracts, strategic advice and training/coaching. I’m helping Pfizer reimagine corporate cloud training. 

Rather than using dry, text heavy powerpoint decks to teach, I adopt an approach to education that is engaging, relevant and practical. I build learning pathways that combine the best off the shelf training courses with organisation and platform specific material.

We are using a data driven approach as we experiment with different modes and methods of learning. Agile principles are applied so we can react quickly to participant feedback.

The training program is driving AWS adoption and improved implementations across multiple business units.

AWS Training Lead

Created AI pipeline and workflow for routing 80 000 support tickets annually with 93% accuracy.

Trained and mentored 4 engineers on building AI powered automation using AWS cloud services.

Built model training pipeline. Created and deployed ML containers on SageMaker AI platform. Fine tuned BERT model. Implemented Step Function workflows for capturing data and routing tickets. Used pgvector to identify similar tickets. Managed infrastructure and deployments with Terraform and GitHub Actions.

AI and Automation Consultant

Led a globally distributed team of 30 engineers delivering an event driven automation platform for IT operations.

Leveraged AWS serverless technologies including Lambda, EventBridge, Step Functions, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB, API Gateway and Fargate to build a resilient and flexible platform. Grew the platform to over 150 loosely coupled services.

The platform and tooling delivered annual cost savings for the organisation in excess of 1.5MM USD net.

High test coverage and efficient CI/CD pipelines resulted in 3000+ production deployments per week. Use of GitHub dependabot resulted in fleet wide security patching taking less than 1 hour. 

Transitioned from AWS Chalice to “pure” lambda functions, deployed using Terraform and Github Actions. 

Built a team culture centred around innovation, high performance, participation and learning. The change failure rate was so low we stopped tracking it.

Managed a GitHub enterprise account with 5000+ users. Administered an Atlassian cloud account with ~2000 users.

Recruited 25 contract team members including Software Engineers. Also led 100+ interviews and involved in initiating hire requests, preparing job descriptions, reference checking and on-boarding. Identified consultant to conduct review of hiring process to ensure diversity in candidates and hiring.

Team Lead, Automation Platform

Led a maintenance programs focusing on automation, driven by the need for compliance with GDPR requirements. 

Developed tooling for Drupal asset automation management resulting in time and cost savings. Automated fast security patching of a portfolio of websites using templated changes. Delivery and deployment went from 3 weeks plus to 3 days.

Delivered the first implementation of ChatOps within the Digital Engineering function at Pfizer,  improving internal customer service via self service.

Deployed, managed and supported AWS cloud infrastructure for multiple business units.

Tech Lead Automation & Infrastructure

Engaged to scale websites and associated management processes, while maintaining compliance with internal QA processes.

Worked with suppliers across multiple locations (including India, Eastern Europe, Brazil) to ensure vendors could deliver to Pfizer standards.

Successfully re-engineered application deployment and approvals pipeline processes, delivering cost reduction, cycle time reduction, with improved compliance outcomes.

Procured and managed Pfizer’s first AWS account.

Another week, another AWS ReInvent Comminity ReCap in the bag. 

Last night I shared the stage with Binqi Zhang, PhD, CCSP, fellow Community Builder Gerald Bachlmayr, Johnny Mirza and our host Jackson Morgan. 

We all agreed that ReInvent is huge, exhausting but totally worth going. When it came to the biggest announcements we all had our own take.
