This birthday has surprised me.

Yes, there was an unexpected moment of recognition that landed quietly (I’ll share the link in the comments).
What stayed with me more was what followed.

Messages, voice notes, and DMs from friends near and far. Gentle check-ins that said, “I see you.”

And I got to spend it with my favourite people in Singapore.

Ten years ago, birthdays meant big brunches and loud dinners — three or four conversations happening at once. Lots of noise. Lots of motion.

Back then, I planned my birthdays.

Now, my friends plan them for me.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped performing celebration and learned how to receive it.

Smaller gatherings. Deeper conversations. People I’ve known for years — some for over a decade.

I’ve never been someone who looks forward to birthdays. This year, friends gently insisted.

And instead of resisting it, I let myself receive it.

When you stop performing certainty and having it all together, people don’t just respect you — they start to trust you.

On the eve of Lunar New Year, this feels like the right note to end one cycle and step into the next.

I feel very loved. Very seen. Very grateful.

I finally said yes to something I’d wanted to do for years: moderating a panel instead of speaking on one.

Because the most interesting part of any panel isn’t the individual expertise — it’s what happens between the experts.

Moderating, to me, feels like orchestration. Listening deeply, building on ideas, and creating the conditions for insights to emerge in real time. When it’s done well, a panel stops feeling like a Q&A and starts feeling like a conversation.

The best ones feel like you’ve been quietly invited into a great dinner table — smart women, real banter, and ideas connecting in unexpected ways.

For a long time, I was invited to sit on panels as a subject matter expert. Rarely to moderate them. So when Yvonne Siow invited me to moderate PlayPan - Play For Good's International Women’s Day panel this year, I didn’t hesitate.

I’m excited, a little nervous, and genuinely in awe of the women I’ll be sharing the floor with — all doing meaningful work in the impact space.

The theme is Give to Gain.

The hidden price of invisibility.

Everyone tells you to “be visible.”
But they rarely mention the hidden cost of being visible in the wrong places.

In leadership, invisibility is rarely neutral.
Decisions still get made. Narratives still form. Opportunities still move — just not with you in the room.

Early on, I tried to be everywhere.
LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, industry spaces — spreading myself thin trying to be seen.

Then I realised something uncomfortable:
My people weren’t everywhere.

So I chose invisibility in some places, so I could choose visibility where it actually mattered.

My biggest supporters didn’t come from friends.
They came from people paying attention in the right room.

Visibility isn’t about volume.
It’s about placement.

Invisibility can feel like humility.
But when it’s unintentional, it’s often just expensive.

P.S. If someone told you to “be more visible” tomorrow, would you know where that visibility needs to happen?

Lunar New Year creates a natural pause.
A moment to take stock of what worked, what didn’t, and what no longer deserves energy.

I realised I hadn’t fully closed the last year — even with all the tools I teach and use.

LinkedIn has been good to me — through the conversations, the quiet followers, and the people who’ve been here consistently without needing to be loud.

So as a Lunar New Year gift, I’m sharing something we created with care.

– reflect on the year you’ve just lived

– and consciously decide what to carry forward — and what to leave behind

We originally designed this for our Women in Business community, but the work felt universal, so I’m sharing it here openly.
