I was the founder of Bersin & Associates, which then became Bersin by Deloitte. Since leaving Deloitte in 2018 I now lead The Josh Bersin Company and The Josh Bersin Academy, the world's professional development destination for HR.

I am a keynote speaker and advise HR teams and vendors in the HR space, and also serve as an educator, thought leader, and personal coach to HR and business leaders around the world.

Leaving a compliment on someone's post and then dissapearing from LinkedIn is rude.

Agree or Disagree?

When I retire from LinkedIn, I’m not leaving quietly.

No soft exit.
No polite gratitude carousel.
Just one last over-the-top masterpiece of corporate melodrama.

Because this place doesn’t reward humility.

It rewards noise, arcs, and glorified status updates disguised as character development.

There will be build-up.
There will be silence.
There will probably be a selfie nobody asked for.

LinkedIn exits aren’t farewells.
They’re cinematic events. Algorithm-first, ego-polished.

Not a goodbye.
A slow descent into molten engagement lava.
Thumbs-up optional, but strongly implied.

And when the glow finally swallows my feed, remember this:

I did it for the reach.
I did it for the plot.
I did it because this platform runs on emotional humblebrags, and I aim to please.

I recently ran a small experiment.

I wanted to see what happens if you take one of LinkedIn’s golden standard questions and use it in real life.

For several days, I tested it everywhere:

I told the barista strong coffee is essential.

“Strong coffee is the foundation of life. Agree?”

I suggested shorter meetings at work.

“Fewer meetings increase productivity. Agree?”

I told my wife we should finally tackle the overflowing laundry.

“Organized closets maximize efficiency. Agree?”

I reminded my son to finish his homework.

“Timely homework builds character. Agree?”

I told my dog it’s walk time.

The “Open to Work” banner is like showing up to a party with a neon sign that says “I might leave with someone else.”

Some people love it.
Some people fear it.
Some employers, apparently, treat it like a betrayal worthy of a medieval punishment.

And here’s what got me thinking:

In some countries (so I heard), companies actually fire people for having this green halo on their profile.

Yes. Fired. Over a banner.
Imagine losing your job for quietly hinting you might want a different job.

So I’m curious:

Is this banner a personal choice?
Or do employers have the right to interfere with what their employees display on LinkedIn?

What’s your take?

LinkedIn, this needs to stop!

Every year, a few months before New Year, my feed starts melting into one big group therapy circle.

“This was a difficult year.”
“This year tested me.”
“This year taught me to let go.”

And I’m just sitting here thinking:

If every single year is “the hardest year of my life”, maybe the plot twist isn’t the year.

Maybe it’s our addiction to dramatic updates.

At this rate, I’m waiting for someone to post something like:

“2025 tried to choke me, but I rose like a phoenix thanks to my morning affirmations and 17 productivity apps.”

Calm down.

Sometimes a year is just a year.

Not a villain.
Not a mentor.
Just 365 days you survived with questionable decisions and way too much caffeine.
