Can I share with you my weird trait?

Yes, you might guess it.


I was never a fan of celebrating birthdays. 

Just didn't get the meaning of it. 

Maybe it stemmed from how I didn't like "eyes on me" when I was younger.
(Ironic considering I'm speaking to thousands of people for a living now)

And if we celebrate ourselves frequently, is there  a "need" to celebrate birthdays? 


In the recent years, birthdays have taken a different intent for me.

#1/ 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴... 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥

Notice how your phone camera view is always on the the birthday boy or girl?

Well, I've learnt to look up and around.

And I've seen how my parents, siblings and loved ones who have celebrated me.

Lowered mobility, more white hair and wrinkles. 

I've learnt to celebrate and appreciate them, as much as they do for me.

#2/ 𝘈 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 "𝘣𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘥"

When my son, Davey, came in to our lives, he turned our lives upside down.

For the first few years, I told myself,

"May courage and faith be birthed within me"

These few years, I remind myself to birth joy, resilience and impact in my life so I can lead him better in the years to come.

#3/ 𝘈 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧.

Perhaps best explained with Chinese wisdom,

“吾十有五而志于学，三十而立，四十而不惑，五十而知天命，六十而耳顺，七十而从心所欲，不逾矩。”

From the Analects of Confucius, 

At fifteen, I was focused on learning. At thirty, I stood firm. At forty, I had no doubts. At fifty, I knew the decrees of heaven. At sixty, my ear was tuned to truth. At seventy, I could follow my heart’s desires, without transgressions ."

Not to be followed as dogma, but I've learnt to care less and listen inwards.

To seek my own truth and way.

Sans the fanfare or mega celebrations.

Just a family dinner over chicken rice, with two slices of cake and...

a kid who declares that everyone's birthdays (and cakes) are all his. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Public speaking isn’t about you. 

It never was. Here's why 👇🏻


Years ago, I thought I had public speaking all figured out.

I believed it was about my message,
my voice, and my ability to inspire.

Then I met Bongani.

We were both speakers at an event in India.

I was young, ambitious, and, if I’m honest, carrying a lot of ego. 

I told him, 
“Speaking is my way to express my gift and change the world.”

He smiled and said something that changed my life:
“Speaking is service.”

I didn’t get it at first. 

So, he explained:
“If you have 10 minutes to speak to 15 people,
you’ve taken 150 minutes of the world’s time. 
That’s a gift. Your job is to serve them with those 150 minutes.”

That one conversation flipped everything I thought I knew about public speaking.

I realized I had been doing it all wrong.

I was focused on me. 
👉🏻 How I looked, how I sounded, how I wanted to be remembered.

But Bongani’s words taught me this:
✅ Speaking isn’t about being impressive.
✅ It’s about being useful.

When you step on stage, it’s not about:
❌ Your big agendas.
❌ Your fancy suit
❌ Your ego.

👉🏻 It’s about your audience.
→ What do they need?
→ How can you serve them?
→ How can you make their time worthwhile?

The moment you shift the spotlight from yourself to your audience, everything changes.

✨ You connect more deeply.
✨ You deliver more value.
✨ You make a real impact.

So now, every time I step on stage, I ask myself:
“How can I serve them today?”

Because the truth is, the stage isn’t yours.

It belongs to the people who’ve given you their time.

What if your life became someone else’s guidebook?

The way you live today becomes the guidebook for how they’ll live tomorrow.

Let's talk about the fear.

The fear of creating your personal brand.


"What if people judge me?" 
"What if I sound stupid?" 
"What if nobody cares?"

That fear? 
It's real.

And it's why most professionals stay invisible.

Here's what I've learned after teaching 65,000+ leaders:

The professionals who succeed aren't fearless.

They're fearful.
But they post anyway.

They worry about judgment.
But they share anyway.

They doubt their expertise.
But they help people anyway.

Let me address the fears directly:

"What if people judge me?" 
→ They will. But most people are too focused on their own fears to notice yours.

"What if I'm not expert enough?" 
→ You don't need to be the #1 expert. You just need to be one step ahead of someone who needs your help.

"What if I fail publicly?" 
→ I did. Including a Mandarin presentation in Macau that bombed so badly I wanted to quit. I'm still here.

"What if my competitors see this?"
→ Good. Let them watch you build influence while they stay silent.

Here's what I wish someone told me earlier:
💡 The cost of invisibility is higher than the cost of imperfection.

Every day you wait is another day someone else solves the problem you could've solved.
Every post you don't publish is a connection you'll never make.
Every story you don't share is trust you'll never build.

The fear you're feeling right now?

It's not a stop sign.
It's proof you're about to do something meaningful.
Because if it didn't matter, you wouldn't be scared.

Not a perfect post. Not a viral post.
Just an honest one.

Everyone's chasing the algorithm.

The perfect hook. 
The trending topic.
The post that "finally breaks through."

But here's what I learned after building a $4M brand:

Most people get this wrong about social media.

An open note to every procurement professional who says:

"We like to request for a discount on your program"


We are knees deep on booking in work for H1 2026.

A call came in. 

She identified herself as part of the procurement department of our newly-onboarded MNC client.

We had gotten the management approval and go-ahead for our proposal and quotation.

So I was puzzled. 

(Procurement) Client: Can we request for a discount on your program? 

Me: Oh we get that sometimes. But why are you asking for a discount now?

Client: We do that all the time. By the way, your pricing is a little high. Can we request you discount it to $xx,xxx? (a cut of 12%) 

 --

I get it.

She's just.. "doing her job". 

There are procurement priorities, SOPs and KPIs. She probably gotten "successes" before.

It makes their department look good because they have generated "cost savings". 

But here are my thoughts:

#1/ "Your pricing is a little high..." - relative to what? 

I'd appreciate if she given me benchmarking or data. 

Or if she requested for discount, to give us reasons or considerations to agree to it. (nope, none of it)

#2/  Does it make sense for your company to tell you to do the same job.. and then pay you 10-15% less, the next month as an employee? 

If not, why does it make sense for small companies to bend over backwards, just because? 

Negotiation is part of the game.

But not when your management has approved in writing. And now you've a staff circling back to "try their luck".

#3/ Procurement and buying relationships are also meaningful touch points and business enablers (or breakers). 

It shows your company's positioning, attitude towards selection of your working partners and fair dealing. 

When you bring in good partners to impact your people and operations for the better... they'll in turn benefit and grow your business. 

And when you don't...?

Of course, I didn't budge (nor counter-propose) and kept the conversation short as I was headed to another meeting.

Ever feel that knot in your stomach before hitting "share" button?

What truly makes a financial advisory leader shine?

This reads so real for me.

𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.

This moment shook me, always. 

Riots everywhere. 
Burglary in broad daylight. 

This was Medan, Indonesia in 1998. 🇮🇩

Why? What happened?

In late 1997, multiple Southeast Asian currencies crashed during the Asian Financial Crisis.
𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁.

Indonesian Rupiah fell from 2,400 per USD to 17,000 per USD within months, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟴𝟬% 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗔𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱/𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿.
The government had no choice but to seek 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 (𝗜𝗠𝗙).

Panic spread.
Anxiety turned into 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁.

Medan was the first city hit.
Rioters targeted Indonesian Chinese communities.

Our housing complex organised 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳-𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻, 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Everyone prepared to defend their families until we escaped.

I still remember how chaotic it was at the port, when I took the ferry to Penang, and then to Singapore. 🇸🇬

Til today, it is still a traumatic memory to many affluent Indonesians. 😢

They remembered the currency crash. 
They remembered the bank collapse. 
They remembered the horrors in the street.
They remembered how 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.

This is why, the same affluent Indonesians understand the importance of

- Diversifying your assets, especially placing parts of the assets outside of Indonesia
- Choosing a politically stable country
- Hedging against currency volatility

✅Singapore checks all of the above.

One lesson from 1998 that still stands today:
𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱… 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻.

The 1998 crisis wasn’t just an economic event.
It was trauma.
It was survival.
It was a lesson that still lives in every conversation I have with clients aged 40 and above.

And maybe, just maybe, someone reading this today lived through it too.

So let me ask you a real question that history never forgets:
𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝗲?

Why Indonesians Trust Singapore Today

When it comes to money matters, it’s no bro jokes. 😮‍💨

The 3 most dangerous words when it comes to investment: 

"Trust me, bro"

If you’re thinking of doing business with a 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴…
read this before you 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 a single dollar.

Because I was a CASUALTY. 
I learnt the hard way and 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀 $𝟯𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬.

Years ago, I went into a business with someone I 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆,
and I believed he would never cross the line.

But when I started asking for financial accounts… 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳.

“Corporate account still cannot be opened.”

“The bank is delaying.”

“Give me a bit more time.”
“I’ll send the statements soon.”

Weeks became months.
Excuses became stories.
Until after relentless questioning, the truth is finally out:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

More than half of it went straight into his personal pocket and 𝗜 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, $𝟯𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 to be exact.

And the relationship?
Gone.
Crushed by the weight of money, secrecy, and betrayal.

That money was the PRICE I paid to learn this expensive truth:

Money doesn’t just change people.
𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲.

So here’s my take on this Reddit case and what you need to keep in mind:

1️⃣  𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.
You don’t need to run operations, but you 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 to bank accounts, payments, and real numbers.

If you’re shut out from the finances, you’re not a partner but a scam target.

2️⃣𝗕𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀… 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀.
I’ve seen families break, lifelong friendships collapse, and relationships beyond repair. 

All because of money matters.

Affection doesn’t protect you from financial loss.

3️⃣𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.
It’s where oversight is clear and accountability is built-in.

4️⃣𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀:
If something looks too good, too easy, too smooth… slow down. Ask harder questions.

Protect your money before you need to protect your relationships.

✅check everything, 
✅question everything, and 
✅don’t gamble with trust.
