The coaching industry is getting a bad name.

And this is the real reason why. 💡

Lately, I chanced upon a Tiktok video.

The creator was ranting about how he's seen a surge of "coaches" in Singapore.

All of them were... "hawking their wares", "selling the dreams"... while they are still learning... how to "coach". (yes, this is a skill in itself) 

He made a good point. 

Some of the "coaches" are more concerned about making your money than making sure they are growing too (or first). 

More so, the coaches who are worth their salt, have attained some form of mastery and competence. 

They are able to: 
✅ Understand the context and different prospects, that come their way
✅ Have clarity about the underlying psychology (dreams, pains, desires) of their clients
✅ Equipped with tools, methods and processes to ensure transferrability 

These days, we have undergraduates who may still be struggling with school and yet are promising you plenty upsides in work and life. 

Or "career coaches" who may be "stuck" in a less-than-fulfilling careers, telling you to chase your dream job? 

See the irony?

In my space, we sometimes say too:

"Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

I'll challenge that --

"Those who can, do and learn hard. So that's why, they can teach better"

Last weekend, I wrapped up a highly intense facilitation assignment for a Chinese EMBA Program with the Singapore Management University.

While I've been teaching and speaking in Mandarin across Asia, I realized it wasn't enough.

These students were successful entrepreneurs, founders who have taken their companies public, second-gen business leaders from China

They invested over 7-figures RMB to learn. 

So I went to Preply and found my most ideal Mandarin coach in Teacher Carol.

She went through with me relevant Chinese vocabulary, corrected my colloquial Mandarin terms and habits and even, brainstormed ideas to work a mainland Chinese crowd. 

With Teacher Carol's help, I delivered a relatively effective assignment and got the nod of approval from the Program Director.

It will be dangerous and naive for me to think, I could just "wing it".

Because that's not what good coaches and teachers, do.

Are you superstitious? 🎈

I never used to. But this is my intention for 2026.


For the longest time, I never believed in magic, chance or hope.
In fact, I used to think of people who do, as "giving their power away".
They are superstitious and want to just... "manifest" their way through. 

And not do the work required. 

"They are just being plain lazy. 

Instead, I may not be the most gifted in the room. But I will outwork everyone else."

So none of the esoteric bulls**t please!

Yet as I grow to be more open over the past decade, I've realized this instead.

It's not just working your ass off. 

Because there is magic in...

🎁 Learning how to love and dream, without holding back
🎁 Listening and connecting with your inner child 
🎁 Believing in the "flow of life" and respecting your seasons
🎁 Surrendering to the process and embracing equanimity

One of the Chinese sayings that has inspired me a lot:

命里有时终须有, 命里无时莫强求

If it's meant for you, it will come eventually. If it's not yours to have, it's futile to chase or demand. 

In the past year, my students have cleared their Top of the Table (TOT) 4x in a row, attracted over a dozen quality candidates over LinkedIn, get featured on TV and mass media. Our business has grown in revenues, 40+% y-o-y while supporting an insurance giant scale regionally. 

Brand building in 2026, shares this parallel.

I still am not superstitious. But I embrace the dualities of life. 

It's the 'yang' - having the structure, systems, discipline and grind.

But it's also the 'yin' - creating with your own energies, being in the flow of your life, building your own garden of opportunities and attracting. 

The right people and events will come your way.

The world has so much to offer. And so do you.

✔️ Posting daily. ✔️ Growing followers. ✔️ Chasing engagement.

Another wave is learning AI.

✔️ Prompt engineering. ✔️ ChatGPT hacks. ✔️ Automation workflows.

Another group is doubling down on networking.

✔️ Coffee chats. ✔️ Conferences. ✔️ LinkedIn DMs.

"Tell me more about yourself..."

Can you answer that in 30 seconds? Without stumbling?

Most people freeze. 
I did too.

It was 2014.
I had just quit my five-figure sales job to become a full-time speaker and coach.

No corporate pedigree.
No fancy connections.

Just a poor GPA in Accounting and a dream that everyone thought was foolish.

And here I was, sitting across from a senior executive who wanted to know my story.

Here's what I wish I knew then:
💡 Most people confuse reputation with personal brand.

Everyone has a reputation. 
→ It's what people say about you when you're not in the room.

But a personal brand?
→ That's intentional. 
→ Strategic. 
→ Authentic.

Your efforts, education, and experience don't automatically build your brand. 

I learned this the hard way.
→ In my early days, I was living on a $15 daily budget for food and transport.
→ I took on side gigs. Writing, hosting, and translation just to make ends meet.
→ I doubted myself constantly: "Who am I to train corporate leaders?"

But I made a choice.

Instead of waiting for permission or validation, I defined what I stood for.

I focused on TWO things:
1️⃣ Define your brand
Ask yourself:
👉🏻 What do I want to be known for?
👉🏻 What value do I bring that others don't?
👉🏻 What's my unique story, perspective, or expertise?

For me, it was empowering leaders and professionals to build influence through authenticity.

2️⃣ Be clear about what it stands for
Ask yourself: 
👉🏻 What principles guide my work? 
👉🏻 What do I stand for (and against)? 
👉🏻 How do I want people to feel after working with me?

When your brand is clear, people know exactly what you stand for and what value you bring.

Fast forward to today:
→ I've taught 65,000+ leaders across 20+ cities
→ Built a $4M corporate services brand
→ Made 7-figure deals through LinkedIn

None of this happened because of my credentials.
It happened because I built a brand people could trust. 

A well-defined personal brand builds credibility. 

It opens doors.
It creates opportunities that your resume never could 🔥

From being bullied in school to speaking across 20+ countries.

My journey wasn’t easy, but it taught me lessons I’ll never forget.

From ages 7 to 17, I was bullied.

Socially awkward. 
Low self-esteem. 
Struggled to make eye contact.

Fast forward to today:
→ Spoken to 65,000+ leaders across 20+ countries and cities

Here's what I learned:

1. Your weaknesses can become your greatest strengths 💪🏻

👉🏻 Being an introvert once felt like a curse in networking and public speaking. 
👉🏻 Now? It's my superpower.
👉🏻 I listen deeply. I observe carefully. I connect authentically.
👉🏻 I don't just deliver presentations, I tell meaningful stories that resonate.

2. Starting from zero is a gift, not a handicap 💐

👉🏻  2012: Graduated with a poor GPA in Accounting. No corporate experience. No influential connections.
👉🏻  2014: Quit my sales job to become a full-time speaker earning ~$60k annually. Lived on a $15 daily budget for food and transport.
👉🏻  The struggle forced me to: 
→ Prove my worth through results, not credentials 
→ Deliver exceptional value, not just talk 
→ Build resilience that money can't buy

3. Invest in yourself before anything else.

👉🏻 I prioritized mentorship over material possessions.
👉🏻 One paid mentorship generated $700k+ from a single client.
👉🏻 The ROI on personal development? Immeasurable.

4. Separate your identity from your roles
👉🏻 2023 was my breaking point. Professional burnout, family tensions, mental health struggles.
👉🏻 Therapy saved me.
👉🏻 I learned: I am not my achievements. I am not my failures.
👉🏻 This separation gave me freedom to take risks, learn from mistakes, and rebuild stronger.

5. Influence matters more than fame.

👉🏻 Personal branding isn't about going viral.
👉🏻 It's about: 
→ Building trust with the right people 
→ Creating leverage to serve others effectively 
→ Delivering substance over superficial flash

I've made 7-figure deals online, not because I'm famous.
But because I'm authentic and consistent.

The kid who couldn't make eye contact is now teaching corporate leaders across Sydney, Chicago, Tokyo, and Riyadh.

Not because the bullying didn't hurt.
But because I chose to reframe it.

Every struggle became a story.
Every setback became a setup for growth.

If you're a business owner, people expect you to be:

100% productive, every single day.

→ Always "on," always crushing it 
→ Peak performance from sunrise to sunset 
→ No off days, no slow starts 
→ Hustle mode activated 24/7

Here's what they don't see:

Some days I'm at 70%.
Other days? 50%.
And some days... 20%.

But I show up anyway.

Nobody talks about this.

We see the highlight reels. 
The wins. 
The momentum.

What we don't see:
→ The mornings when "focus" is a foreign concept.
→ The weeks when you're running on fumes but still have to deliver.
→ The days when just answering emails feels like climbing a mountain.

I used to think anything less than 100% meant I was failing.

That slow days = wasted potential.
That rest = laziness.

I was wrong.
 
Here's what I've learned:
→ 70% days build consistency 
→ 50% days build resilience 
→ 20% days build self-awareness

The goal isn't perfection.
It's persistence.

Here's the reality:
70% effort × 365 days = massive results
100% effort × burnout = zero days left

Sustainable success beats temporary intensity.
Every time.

Some days, you'll crush your goals.

Other days, just showing up IS the goal.

And that's okay.

Because business isn't a sprint.

It's showing up, again and again, even when you're running on empty.


So if you're feeling guilty for not being "on" today,

You're not lazy.
You're not failing.
You're being strategic.

Sometimes, doing it anyway, even at 20%,  is the most courageous thing you can do.

Best thing that happened in my 20s?

Getting rejected by Procter & Gamble. 


The email headline:
"Thank you for your application for <position>..."

The performative opening:
"We thank you for your outstanding performance.. There was a record number of applicants..."

I was rejected. Gulp.


At that point, I had only two choices.
Take on an accounting job offer.
Or build my dream.
I decided on the latter.

My thinking was simple - I could always default back to finance.

But if I don't take the risks when my opportunity costs were lowest, I'll regret it. 

Yet it wasn't linear.
→ I had zero corporate working experience
→ My network was limited
→ I am not the most polished or savvy kid out there

Yet that job rejection and having "no plan Bs" (I thank one of my past mentors, Usha Menon, for this liner) meant that:

✅ I learnt how to find my voice and power → I sold my way to Chicago, Tokyo, Sydney and Riyadh and taught over 65,000 leaders in communications and personal branding

✅ With no experience and cred, I built and negotiated my own offers → I've raised my fees almost 250x and done multiple 7-figures USD of business with multinationals 

✅  Not having anyone endorse me and being "bad at selling" → I've built a personal brand that opened doors of trust and faith, landing myself on media over 90 times to tell my stories 

Have I arrived?

Nope.

But if you need a vote of faith in 2026, here's yours.

You've got it.

But you got to bet on yourself first. And start.

Most people avoid posting online because they fear criticism.

I did too, until it helped me build my 7-figure business

Here's what changed my perspective:

→  In 2015, someone told me I wasn't cut out to train corporate leaders. 
I had no track record, no credentials, just ambition.

That stung.

→  In 2018, after a Mandarin presentation in Macau, the feedback was brutal. 
"Worst speaker we've had."

That crushed me.

→  In 2023, a LinkedIn comment called my posts "cringe" 
and questioned my credibility.

That hurt.

But here's the pattern I noticed:

→ The 2015 critic? 
Pushed me to invest $700k worth of effort into becoming undeniable.

→ The 2018 feedback?
Made me separate my identity from my role and I rebuilt my skills from scratch.

→ The 2023 comment? 
Forced me to clarify my message and double down on authenticity.

👉🏻 Every critic became a checkpoint.

If no one's criticizing you, it means one of two things:

1. You're not visible enough to matter
2. You're playing so safe that no one notices

Critics show up when you're taking up space.

When you're challenging norms.

When you're growing beyond your current container.

I've taught 65,000+ leaders across 20+ cities.
Built a 7-figure business.

None of that happened in silence.

It happened in the noise of people questioning whether I belonged there.

The difference between then and now?

I stopped seeing criticism as a verdict on my worth.

I started seeing it as data on my direction.

→ Am I growing? 
Critics will show up.

→ Am I staying stagnant?
Crickets.

So if you're getting criticized right now:

Congratulations.

You're visible.
You're evolving.
You're threatening someone's version of "how things should be."

That's not a problem.

That's proof you're moving.

The only question is: Are you listening to the right critics?
Or are you letting the noise stop you from becoming who you're meant to be?

Personal or professional content?

Which one should you post if you want to grow your personal brand?

Most people think they have to choose one.

👉🏻 All professional = 
People respect your expertise but feel like you're hiding behind a screen.

👉🏻 All personal =
People like you but aren't sure why they should work with you.

Here's what I've learned after years of building brands on LinkedIn:
→ Professional content builds authority and trust. 
→ Personal content builds intimacy and connection.

You need both.

💡 When you only share professional insights, 
you become that expert no one really knows.

They'll consume your content. 
They'll respect your knowledge. 
But they won't feel connected to YOU.

💡 When you only share personal updates, 
you're relatable but not referable.

They'll engage with your posts. 
They'll feel like they know you. 
But they won't be sure what problems you solve.

The sweet spot?

Mix them strategically 🧠

💡 Professional content gets people to trust your expertise. 
💡 Personal content gets people to feel like they know you.

Both can work independently, I've seen it.

But together? 

That's when you build something powerful: A brand people trust AND relate to.

Because at the end of the day, we all eat chicken rice.

But not everyone can solve problems like you can.

A financial advisor reached out to me last week.

"Ben, my LinkedIn is doing well. Good engagement. People love my posts."

"So what's the problem?" I asked.

"When I reach out to book meetings? Crickets."

I hear this pattern constantly from the financial advisors I work with.

Here's the hard truth most don't want to hear:

Each segment needs different hand-holding.

🔁 Stage 3: Convert with Confidence
By now, they've consumed your content multiple times.
This is when your CTAs actually work when:
→ Your content cuts deep into their situation and creates "open loops"
→ Your case studies reflect the pain and problems they are facing
→ Audience has the "mind share" you are the "the one" to help them

Remember, the advisors who win aren't the ones with the biggest following.

They're the ones who:
💡 Understand their segment deeply
💡 Show up consistently with relevant insights
💡 Guide prospects from curiosity to conversion

Attention won is just the beginning.
Attention converted is what grows your practice.

Growing up in Asia, I was taught to follow the ""safe path.""

But the leaders who thrive?

👉🏻 Stop clinging to comfort.  Start exploring what's possible.

2️⃣ Focus on solutions, not excuses. 

In 2014, I quit my job to become a speaker with a $15 daily budget.

I could've blamed the economy. 
My lack of connections.

4️⃣ Seek wisdom from mentors.

In 2017, I invested thousands in mentorship, money I didn't have.

That decision?
It generated $700k+ from one client.
→ Mentors give you structure, accountability, and perspective.

👉🏻 In 2026, invest in guidance. Don't wait.

5️⃣ Take responsibility. Give gratitude.

In Asia, humility is a virtue. But humility doesn't mean staying small.

"Why would I need a personal brand when my entire book is built on referrals?"

A financial advisor asked me this last week.

He wasn't being defensive.

He was genuinely confused.

"Ben, 80% of my clients come from referrals. The rest are COI relationships I've built over 15 years. Why would I waste time on LinkedIn?"

Fair question.

Here's what I told him:
"Your referral engine isn't your marketing strategy. 
It's your reputation working overtime—24/7—without you even knowing it."

He looked puzzled.

So I asked:
"When someone refers you, what's the first thing that prospect does?"

"They... Google me?"

"Close. They LinkedIn you."

Here's what most financial advisors don't realize:
💡 Your personal brand isn't competing with your referrals.
💡 It's amplifying them.

Think about it:

A client refers you to their colleague,
That colleague searches your name on LinkedIn.

They see... what exactly?

A sparse profile from 2019?
Generic posts about market updates?
Or a feed full of insights that prove you actually understand their world?

That 30-second scroll determines whether they take the call, or ghost the referral.

Your referral network has a shelf life.

I learned this the hard way in 2014.

I quit my sales job to become a full-time speaker, earning ~$60k annually.

I had the skills.
I had some clients.

But I had zero visibility beyond my immediate network.

When that well ran dry, I had nothing.
No pipeline. No backup. No leverage.

By 2017-2018, I secured an exclusive regional contract with a top-3 global insurer and crossed quarter-M in sales with this account alone.

Not because I suddenly got better at speaking.
Because I built a 24/7 marketing team that worked while I slept:

Social media doesn't replace your referral engine.

This year marks the beginning of my 8th year in the industry. 

I remember the awkward silence when I shared my new title. 

Financial Consultant a.k.a “Insurance Agent”. 

I expressed my desire to build a new career trajectory. 

Something not just totally outside of my comfort zone but a completely new industry. 

Starting all over again as a Financial Consultant. 

At times even my inner self doubt was loud inside. 

I had to learn to silence it by working extra harder with 300% more effort. 

When people were sleeping, I was awake at 4-5am every single morning. 

When people shut down their laptops at 6pm, that’s when my first appointments began. 

Yesterday, I was recognised as a Top of the Table Qualifier. 

To the outside world, TOT is just a title. 

But to me, it saw the sweat and tears, representing the top 1% in the company. 

MDRT which stands for Million Dollar Round Table is already considered as the the Gold standard for all financial representatives]

Top of the Table (TOT) represented 6 times of the usual MDRT standards. 

It was my 4th consecutive TOT. 

There was a celebrated TOT march-in recognition. 

Spotlights shone on us with cheers from our fellow peers. 

That one minute where everything looks glamorous.

But what truly stopped me in my tracks wasn’t the stage.

It was the seats.

Because of the new seat design this year, my entire agency stood up and cheered when I walked in.

That moment touched me in the best way.

Those videos matter more than you know.

And when I turned around and saw my mentor Jaden Wang - Grooming Future Leaders in Financial Services literally running to the front of the stage to help me take photos…

That’s when it hit me.

Being at the top is not a solo sport.

It is a team effort of well-supported ecosystem and support of clients. 

TOT looks like one minute of glory.

But it’s really 365 days of discipline. 
 
Nowadays I have shifted away from long working hours. 

Instead it is going from shallow transaction to deep pivoting conversations with clients.   

There are still moments of self doubt at times. 

But the change is real. 

There’s no failures but just lessons. 

We break, we rebuild and repeat

I’ve grown so much in this profession. 

Often in ways I never imagined when I first started.

Not just as a sales producer but as a leader.

Seeing my team members qualified for MDRT consistently makes me feel proud. 

I grow as a mother too. 

My kids even say they feel like they’re “part of the industry” now.

This journey didn’t just change my career.

It changed our lives.

Glad to say that the stage and glamour may be temporary.

But my growth stays.

LinkedIn Top Voice | “THE Go-To” Financial Consultant of CXOs CEOs and Senior Corporate Leaders

This week has been a hectic one.

I had just returned from the Prudential Agency Leaders Conference in KL.

Within 24 hours, I was back at the airport again.

This time, I was bringing my team overseas for our annual retreat.

As a mum, every trip requires careful planning and conversations with my kids, so they understand that this is part of my role as a leader.

This year, we decided to celebrate in Shenzhen, marking the first time we flew almost 5 hours into China as a team.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made all year.

The D&D was held at a high-end restaurant, with the décor fully outsourced to an events company so the team could simply enjoy the moment.

At the last minute, I also decided to engage a videographer and photographer to document the day.

That decision turned out to be one of the best investments, capturing many precious moments we would otherwise have missed.

There was also no stress by any members to take perfect shots! 🙂‍↕️ 

We visited scenic mountainous areas during the day.

We played real-life Counter Strike, where my entire face and body were repeatedly hit by water pellets.

We also enjoyed ATV rides together.

The entire day was intentionally designed for shared experiences.

During the D&D, I was grateful to be recognised as a Top of the Table Qualifier in the agency.

However, as a leader, this moment was NOT ABOUT ME.

This retreat was meant to celebrate the team and the tough year they had fought through in 2025.

I was deeply grateful that my entire team qualified for Quality Club Elite (QCE). 

This means that we will be travelling to Seoul together in May this year.

The top three producers in the agency also came from my team.

First place went to Maybel Heng [Asia Employee Benefits Consultant of the Year]

Second place went to Zhou Aihua.

Third place went to Jasmine Hong.

2025 was not an easy year, especially for all the working mothers like those on my team.

We constantly juggle time and energy across:

🔥 Work and Clients, 

🔥 Spouse and Children,

🔥 Parents and Household responsibilities

🔥 Health and continuous learning.

Nothing about this journey came easy, and that is precisely why this celebration mattered.

As a leader, there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing my team happy, and able to provide for their family that helps to relieve financial pressure at home.

It also means giving them the freedom to build a career without being weighed down by corporate politics.

The night ended with us celebrating the winners of 2025.

Leadership, to me, has never been about titles or moments on stage.

It is about building a career and life that people feel proud of and at peace with.

This retreat reminded me why I made the unconventional switch from Corporate HR to Financial Services in the first place.

I prefer to WIN as a Team. 

Together with clients and their families over a lifetime, rather than winning temporarily for an organisation.

𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐆𝐃 𝟏𝟎𝐌 𝐛𝐲 𝟔𝟓

A recent case reminded me why I love what I do.

Mr. J (pseudonym) is in his mid-50s and currently the CEO of a MNC. 

He earns 7-digit annual income and he approached me the other day.

"Jas, tell me how to make sure my retirement portfolio hits SGD 10M by 65?"

He had a clear vision of where he wanted to land 10 years later. 

We put everything on the table: 

Current investments, and ongoing premium commitments.

We mutually agreed assumed rate of return.

A realistic runway with no further funding required beyond age 60.

After running the numbers, the answer was direct:

👉 A projected shortfall of SGD 3.5M.

Not a surprise to him but now it was quantified.

Now came the real work.

I mapped out 3 strategic options, each with clear capital impact, risk, and time horizon.

1️⃣ Lump-sum injection today

Cheapest, Fastest and Cleanest. 

Downside is that it compromises liquidity.

2️⃣ Structured contributions over time

It's a disciplined and predictable approach.

With this, we can adopt dollar-cost averaging, but comes with contribution and withdrawal constraints.

3️⃣ Ring-fencing annual bonuses

We can let the yearly variable bonus do the heavy lifting by setting aside every single year. 

No lock-in period but definitely demands financial discipline.

100% dependent on the company performance too. 

During the 1.5 hour discussion, there was:

No product pitching.

No hard-selling of products.

Instead the whole discussion was to provide the couple with possible solutions. 

How each option comes with the trade-offs, assumptions, and probabilities, fully laid on the table. 

What struck me was the setting.

In my corporate years, these conversations happened in boardrooms.

This time, it happened in Mr. and Mrs J's family room.

So I deliberately kept my presentation short with key succinct points. 

CEOs don’t need more slides.

They need to understand the assumptions and whether it's logical.

They want to have answers that survive scrutiny.

What stayed with me wasn’t the numbers.

It was who they are, brilliant, with strong values and deeply philanthropic.

This couple quietly runs a family foundation together with their 2 adult kids.

We ended the evening with a home-cooked meal by Mrs. J.

And words I’ll never forget: “Jas, you’re part of our family.”

I bring the same corporate, strategic, analytical muscle just applied to life, wealth, and legacy for my clients. 

This is how I work.

I came to realise this:

Clarity beats complexity.

This year 2026 is a year full of changes. 

Many of us have read about the key changes happening in the health industry.

This year’s discussion on Critical Illness trends in Singapore stood out.

Critical illness claims are rising.

Not just because people are ageing.

But because medical conditions are detected earlier due to better preventive screening habits.

Medical treatments are also far more advanced today.

Add on sedentary lifestyles and the chronic stress faced by many working parents. 

The big "C" word - Cancer hit rate remains higher than ever.

The good news is that more people survive.

Yet the recovery costs are higher and longer.

This reinforces something I have always believed.

Protection is not a nice-to-have.

It is the solid foundation of every financial plan.

To ensure a severe medical condition doesn’t wipe out a family’s savings.

𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐱𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝟕 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬.

Last night, my daughter cajoled me into driving her to school this morning.

"It fits perfectly with your yoga schedule, Mummy!" she cheekily argued.

This morning, the GPS tempted me with a more "efficient" route. 

The PIE looked 1 minute shorter than my usual AYE route.

"Let's try something new! The traffic looks smooth anyway," I thought.

We took the new route > PIE.

It turned out that accidents can I deed change reality fast.  

Three accidents on Lane 1, 2 and 3 had emerged. 

The highway turned into a slow moving one. 

Motorists were curious, paused and looked. 

The 3 accidents must have just happened because we saw fire engine, traffic police and ambulance trailing behind us. 

We watched the clock tick past the 8am school time.

We finally arrived at 8:07 am.

My daughter was visibly panicked.

In school, 8:07 am isn't just "a little late." 

There's a price to pay for breaking the school rules.

The late students may have to be held back for detention. 

Sitting there in the driver’s seat, watching her worry, I suddenly felt a knot in my stomach.

I left corporate life 7 years ago. 

Since then, there's no punch cards.  

No clock watching. 

No fear of being “late”.

I design my days. 

My time bends around priorities not the other way around.

But this morning, for 7 minutes, I was reminded what it felt like to be bound by systems you don’t control.

And it made me realise something:

Freedom isn’t about having no responsibilities. 

It’s about choosing which rules you still want to live by.

Some are necessary for corporate reasons.

Some are inherited for fairness reasons.

I'm thankful, at where I am today, I manage to outgrow. 

That's the real upgrade to me.

And luckily yoga still works.

Just finished my 9am power flow. 

Regained my usual calm mind and composure. 

All good now. 🧘‍♀️😌

𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟔 𝐯𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔. 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧. 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧.

2016 was my preparation year.

Yet I didn't know it then.

I was standing in front of my alma mater, NTU Business School.

Speaking to my juniors from the HR Consulting cohort. 

During the same time, I had just accepted a new role with Achroma.

Stepped into my first "proper" big office, with a nice view outside.

I self-sponsored myself for the 5 digit Global Remuneration Professional (GRP®) programme by WorldatWork. 

This is a globally recognised professional certification focused on Total Rewards and International Compensation / Remuneration strategy.

To earn it, one must pass 9 knowledge-based exams covering topics like pay strategy, global total rewards, market pricing, analytics, and international compliance.

I have always been the kind of person who willingly invests time, money and effort to deepen my expertise.

Not for recognition but to truly excel and own the expertise in my work.

In April that year, I took my last business trip to Houston.

It was to attend the last global meeting with FMC Technologies.

I remember seeing my ex-boss’ BMW sports car and test-drove it. 

I never thought I would ever be able to own a continental car.

It felt unreal.

At the same time, I was still attending Toastmasters.

Learning how to think on my feet and sharpening my public speaking.

Eventually I started to win "Best Speaker" and "Best Table Topics".

On paper, everything looked like great. 

Except that my health was quietly breaking down.

Early 2016 was when I realised something uncomfortable.

I had reduced my identity into two roles - Employee and Mother. 

I somehow lost myself, my own identity. 

Then I decided to choose myself again. 

I went back to exercise to feel alive again.

That was Jaslyn Version 1.0. Rebuilding from inside.

Fast forward to today.

I am a happy single mother of two.

Raising my kids closely with my sister.

My kids grew from age four and two to 14 and 12 today. 

Today I speak to thousands of financial professionals on international stages. 

I traded my HR textbooks for financial knowledge, attaining Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Insurance Agency Management and Executive MBA. 

From managing employees to now serving more than 700 clients who are mostly in C-Suite roles. 

I still retain my corporate grounding by being a key member in different focus groups of the Company. 

Toastmasters trained my voice.

Corporate life trained my discipline.

Motherhood trained my heart.

2016 did not give me answers.

It gave me tools, the right ones to build the life I live today. 

This is Jaslyn Version 3.0, lighter, fitter and happier. 

The stage may change.

The titles may change.

But the growth stays.

It’s 9am on a Saturday morning.

While most people are sleeping in,
I’m choosing discomfort, again.

As I grow older (wiser), I came to realise 
discomfort is a skill. 

Just like any skill, you need to train it.

3 montha ago, I started weights training.

After annual health screening, I was losing muscles fast. 

My body muscle deterioration accelerated faster than my wrinkle lines. 

After working out at home for two months, I decided to invest in Anytime Fitness membership.

I realised my gym consistency had shown up quietly.

Here’s the part no one really talks about.

As a female gym rookie, walking into a gym that’s predominantly male can feel hmm… awkward.

You’re hyper-aware of the space owned by the regulars. 

You’re also aware of the stares (real or imagined).

You’re also afraid to use the machines in case you “get it wrong”.

And that’s exactly why I stayed.

Growth doesn’t happen in spaces where you’re fully comfortable.

It happens when you choose slight discomfort repeatedly.

Well doesn’t the same apply to:

1. Changing jobs

2. Moving up leadership roles

3. Speaking up in rooms you once stayed silent in

Confidence is not the prerequisite.

Exposure is.

I am not someone to wait to feel ready.

I always choose to move first.

First the discomfort but eventually the comfort will follow.

If your life feels stagnant lately, ask yourself this:

Where have I stopped putting myself in mild, intentional discomfort?

That’s usually the answer.

I’ve spent the past few days strategising how to execute a massive healthcare update.

Yesterday I reached out to 170+ clients, one by one. 

Technically none of my clients would be impacted by the change. 

But I still dedicated a massive amount of effort and energy to plan for this mega communication. 

To me, this is a time-critical exercise to update my clients about these upcoming shield plan changes wef 1st April 2026.

Though tehnically the new legislated changes will not impact my clients immediately.

Unless they choose to make a downgrade after 1st April 2026 (higher out of pocket costs).

Still, I chose to reach out, individually and personally. 

It was to explain their current situation and letting them know that I'm here to answer their questions clearly and without pressure.

Here’s the part most people don’t see.

I don’t earn a single cent from these conversations.

This is not an exercise to get my clients to buy any plans. 

Instead this is an exercise of option of downgrade or maintain if they wish.

There's zero transaction incentive.

Instead my intent is simple - to bring them the clarity they need.

All because if I were an ordinary customer, this is the kind of financial consultant I would want for myself.

Someone who explains changes before they become problems.

Someone who helps me to evaluate the pro-and-cons effects.

Someone who asks,

“If this frees up cashflow, where should that money really go?”

For many clients, the answer isn’t spending.

But how they can maximise their cashflow more strategically towards their own retirement, creating more assets for their future. 

It's also to strengthen their long-term security and their family's safety net.

Let their today’s decision work harder for tomorrow’s freedom.

Going the extra mile is not glamourous. 

It’s time-consuming, to communicate to them 1:1 and to hold several briefing sessions in the course of next one week. 

It’s quiet work.

But this is the (high) standard I choose to hold.

To me trust is not built when my clients choose to work with me and buy a plan. 

It’s built when nothing is sold, and my value is still delivered across to them.

And that’s the kind of practice I intend to run for the next 30 years.

Most Asians were taught one retirement strategy.

Save hard. 💰

Spend minimally. 💸

Leave an inheritance for our kids. 🏦

Die With Zero (DWZ) is a contrarian concept. 

It encourages spending on memorable experiences and generous giving during your lifetime.

It doesn't allow you to leave an inheritance to your loved ones and comes with the risk of running out of money in retirement.

Last year I did a thorough financial review with Uncle Sunny, who is in his early 70s.

Uncle Sunny did everything right by “Asian standards”.

He owns a fully paid HDB home with zero debt.

He had a life plan he paid for 40 years, intended as a legacy for kids.

He also had a 6-digit cash savings sitting quietly.

When retirement came, his health took a toll.

The travel dream became a wheelchair reality.

For someone who used to clock 10K steps a day, the hardest trip now is the few steps from his bed to the living room.

Since retirement, he has been receiving about $1.2K a month from CPF LIFE.

It wasn’t quite enough to make retirement feel like life.

So we sat down to restructure his portfolio, starting with his needs and deepest concerns.

The planning had to make sense.

The solution had to maximise what he already had.

After the restructuring, Uncle Sunny saw his retirement income almost tripled.

And here’s the part most people assume is impossible.

He is still able to leave the same legacy for his children as before.

The difference is simple.

Before, his resources were parked with idle cash.

In today’s world, idle cash also comes with risks of being scammed.

How many times have we read the news of innocent victims losing their lifelong savings with just a few clicks?

Today, Uncle Sunny’s resources are activated, which provides him a stream of passive income.

At the same time, he's reassured that his money will continue to be there.

Today Uncle Sunny buys what he wants without guilt.

He can even treat his friends to birthday meals.

He orders the seafood he actually enjoys.

And the photo sees him holding up a 3kg Alaska crab. 🦀

This is the first time ever, he is willing to splurge on himself.

Die With Zero doesn’t mean “spend until you’re broke.”

It means you stop postponing living.

You decumulate intentionally.

With a good structure, you can still protect what matters.

All it takes is a conversation to understand your priorities. 

And a good trusted financial consultant to help you create the new future that supports both your lifestyle and legacy.

Whether it’s FIRE or Die With Zero, the best strategy is never a trend.

It’s the one that matches your health, your family needs, and your priorities.

For me, I would redefine DWZ as the goal to:

Live with enough.

Live with dignity.

Die with ZERO worries.

𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐲 “𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮”?

Every night, there's a SOP at home. 

All of us would come home and wash up. 

Just before bedtime, the kids would cuddle up beside me. 

That’s when the school drama comes out, the kids call it "Spill the Tea" time.

Friends. Teachers. 

Small (Big to them) things that felt very big that day.

Last night, I expected the usual. 

Instead, my daughter shared with me something insightful in class today. 

Her teacher posed a simple question to her secondary two classmates:

“Do you say I love you to your parents?”

They did a quick poll.

Interestingly (perhaps shocking) out of a class of 40 students:

Only 5 raised their hands.

My daughter was genuinely shocked.

That's because back at home, this phrase “I love you” is said so common. 

It's said more often than the 2025 "word of the day" - yes the 6-7 meme.

Saying "I Love You" has become frivolously casual and almost automatic before we hang up the phone at times. 

My daughter just couldn’t wrap her head around it.

So she did what curious kids do.

She started to 'interview' and asked her classmates why.

Their responses caught her off guard.

Some said they’ve never said it, not even once in their entire memory

Some said they barely talk to their parents due to long working hours. 

Parents and children have different schedules. 

Home was just a place to return to… and sleep.

I listened quietly because I grew up exactly like them.

In my era, saying “I love you” to parents felt awkward, at times very suspicious.

In fact, a rare blurt would somehow send out signs of danger and alarm to parents.

[If not, you can try calling up your parents today and say "I Love You' to them. 
I'm pretty sure they would ask, are you okay my child?]

Sometimes parents even think suspect that we have suicidal thoughts. 

Strange but somewhat true.

Asian traditional parenting taught us love was shown through actions, not words.

And it is not wrong just different ways of expressing love.

But when I decided to become a mother, I made a quiet promise to myself.

My children would never feel the invisible barrier I once felt as a kid.

That night, we talked about how love shows up differently in different families.

Not being expressive doesn’t mean not loving.

But one question stayed with me:

If a child never hears it… 

How are they supposed to learn to say it?

Before bedtime, my daughter hugged me tighter than usual and said it again.

“I love you, Mama”

Some lessons can never be taught in school.

They are somehow internalised quietly, night after night.

And the smallest habits… often shape the biggest and the most secure hearts.

That line caught my attention during my NLP training today.

It came from Joseph Ch'ng from Minds Transformation.  

These 3 words sound simple but once it’s internalised, it changes fundamentally everything.

Sharing a drone video taken while I was sitting on a cliff in China recently.

The beautiful coastline calmed my senses. 

There’s no noise, no meetings or timelines to meet.

Just a lot of space for myself, both physically or emotionally. 

On a day to day basis, we are often on the go, fire-fighting at times. 

Yet we ignore our internal thermostat.

Your state determines your tone.

Your tone determines your conversations.

Your conversations determine your outcomes.

If you are stressed, people around you feel it.

If you are burnt out, your body reacts.

Self care is not selfish.

It is a strategic investment decision.

I love this quote on Self Care: 

It means you give the world best of yourself, not what’s left of you. 

It is built in your internal world first.

Manage your state.

And your performance will follow.
