When Art Basel Opens the Door to Digital Art: A Decade of Belief

It was in 2014 when we launched Germany’s first digital art fair: UNPAINTED
In 2015, full of optimism, we approached Art Basel.
The answer was no.

Last week I received Art Basel’s announcement of “Zero 10” – their initiative to engage digital creators and bring them into dialogue with the established art world. And I find myself unexpectedly emotional.

Not because we were right – but because of the artists who never stopped creating despite the closed doors. The ones who coded in obscurity. Who wrote alorithms when the first computers were switched on. Who minted when no one understood NFTs. Who explored AI and generative art when galleries wouldn’t even return their emails.

As an art historian turned futurist, I’ve always been drawn to the moment when technology meets artistic expression. Artists have always been the first to experiment with new tools, to push boundaries, to critique emerging paradigms – from the camera obscura to the computer. That’s why I became a digital art expert before the term had meaning: because innovation in art has always fascinated me, even when it wasn’t yet accepted.

As an art historian, I am trained to think in centuries. To observe how ideas evolve, how forms shift, and how every generation negotiates the tension between innovation and identity.

Over the years, I have learned to recognize something that is increasingly rare:
originality, context, and authenticity.

Today, as the boundaries between the physical world and digitally generated realities blur, this perspective matters more than ever. Because the question is no longer what technology can create, but who shapes its meaning.

This is why my work in AI is deeply human-centered.

We cannot outsource judgment, cultural understanding, or ethical intention. 
AI may scale cognition, but it cannot replace the cultural memory, imagination, and responsibility that humans bring to the table.

In my new book "From Gutenberg to ChatGPT", I explore how we can build AI systems that are not only powerful, but responsible. Not only intelligent, but human-aligned.

If we lose sight of authenticity in an age of infinite generation, we risk losing the very compass that helps us navigate intelligence — human or artificial.

Sie kann Krankheiten heilen, Wissen demokratisieren, ganze Industrien erneuern. Aber sie kann auch Macht konzentrieren, Ungleichheit vertiefen, Kontrolle zementieren. Die Frage ist nicht, ob KI bleibt – sondern: Wer gestaltet sie, und nach welchen Prinzipien?

Als Kunsthistorikerin bin ich es gewohnt, in Jahrhunderten zu denken. Und je tiefer ich in die KI-Debatte eintauchte, desto klarer wurde mir:

Deutschland steht nicht am Rande dieser Revolution – es trägt den Code für ihre menschlichste Form bereits in sich.

Als Gutenberg 1450 den Buchdruck erfand, demokratisierte er Wissen durch Präzision, Norm und Verlässlichkeit. Dieses Betriebssystem prägt Deutschland bis heute.

Ich nenne es den Gutenberg-Code.

AI as Art: A Debate We’ve Had Before

After a recent talk, a traditional museum director told me: “We've decided to exclude AI art in our jury sessions.”

That sentence felt strangely familiar.
It echoes the early 20th-century debates when photography was dismissed as "not real art." It took decades until museums embraced it.
 
AI art follows exactly this lineage.

What many forget: AI art is not autonomous. 
It cannot create without humans.
 
Human artists work with the biological neural networks of the brain, shaped by patterns, memory, and intention. AI works with artificial neural networks shaped by data humans provide. The two systems mirror each other – one organic, one engineered.

AI may not (yet) have emotions, but it extends the artist's intention. A prompt is not just a technical instruction; it is a creative decision, a conceptual framework, a distilled vision.

What emerges is not "machine art," but human-machine collaboration.

For me, AI art is unmistakably art – but of course its artistic quality depends entirely on the human who shapes the input.
AI expands what creation can be.

New tools have always provoked resistance – until they reshaped culture. Photography did. Digital art did. AI art will.
