This year, for my annual "run to the sun" over the winter holidays, I skipped Lagos and went somewhere new: Côte d’Ivoire 🇨🇮 , spending time in Abidjan and Grand Bassam for the first time.

A few things that deepened my appreciation for the country:
🔸Côte d’Ivoire literally means “Coast of Ivory.” Like the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana) and the Slave Coast (parts of today’s Benin, Togo, and Nigeria), the name comes from how European traders labeled West Africa’s coastline by dominant trade goods. Post-independence, the country formally retained Côte d’Ivoire as its official name and does not recognize translations.

🔸Abidjan is often called the “Paris of West Africa,” because of its lagoon system, architecture, café culture, and deep Francophone intellectual influence.

🔸The country is also the world’s largest producer of cocoa, supplying roughly 40% of global cocoa. Much of the world’s chocolate starts here!

🔸And with over 60 ethnic groups, each with distinct languages, music, and traditions, cultural expression is deeply rich and highly localized (like much of West Africa).

🔸Abidjan isn’t only honoring its past, it’s also building toward the future. The city is currently constructing "Tour F", projected to become the tallest building in Africa, a visible marker of ambition and confidence.

🔸While in Grand-Bassam (a UNESCO-listed colonial city known for its French colonial architecture) I visited the royal palace of the Nzima people. The palace reflects the indigenous political and cultural systems that existed long before colonization and that still endure today.

Sometimes skipping the obvious choice creates room for deeper discovery.

For years, I’ve pushed CS teams to shift from measuring activity to owning outcomes.

- Rewrite your next three customer updates using “What, So What, Now What?” so your emails tell a clear value story, not a feature recap -> I'll share more about this framework in subsequent posts. 

- In every call, anchor on outcomes with thoughtful questions like: “If we were looking back a year from now, what business result would tell you this partnership is working?” and use that to guide your plan.

- Trade one “check-in” meeting for a working session where you configure or measure something that moves a real business KPI.

So why does clarity still feel so hard for GTM teams?

We are surrounded by data. We are investing heavily in AI. And yet many teams are still struggling to answer the most basic questions:

🟢 What is real insight vs. operational distraction?

That gap is what I’m calling SIGNAL - the ability to identify, interpret, and act on what your customers are truly telling you.
