3 weeks ago, my grandmother passed away at 108 years old.
I’ve talked about her often over the years, in my life and even here in my work, because so much of who I am traces back to her. Trying to compress that into a post doesn’t come close to doing it justice which is why I've avoided it.

After she passed, someone from a local paper reached out to me asking if they could write an article on her and it just came out yesterday. In it, two different people referred to her as a beacon. I couldn’t stop thinking about that word  (especially because she lived on Beacon Hill in Boston for a time of her life).

A beacon.

The root of the word comes from the idea of a signal fire set high on a hill- something steady and visible from a distance, something that guides without demanding attention. It doesn’t chase anyone down. It doesn’t argue. It simply shines, and in shining, it offers direction.

I can't think of a better and more accurate description of her than that. 

She delighted in the world around her. She followed the news and stayed curious. She extended care in practical ways- right down to reminding me to bring my skincare down my neck and to wear lipstick when I went out. 

She forgave quickly because she believed resentment only steals from the person carrying it. 

She read the Harvard Health Report monthly and changed things about her health until the end. 

She gathered the family. 

She lived with discipline and joy in the same breath.

For years, when asked about my own values, I put “legacy” at the bottom of the list. I didn’t care much about being remembered. I still don’t care about my name living on through time.

But I care deeply about carrying forward hers.

Legacy, I’ve realized, isn’t about being known. It’s about what you quietly pass down. It’s the steadiness people absorb from you without realizing it. It’s the standard you set for how to live- with curiosity, with generosity, with strength that doesn’t need to announce itself.

If there is steadiness in me, it started with her. If I build things that are rooted and enduring, that instinct came from watching her. If I believe in being a light for others in business and in life, it’s because I was loved by one.

The greatest way I can honor her isn’t through words. It’s by living in a way that continues the transmission.

By being steady, rooted and  being a light on my own hill.

I have three kids all stepping into major transitions at the same time. My oldest is graduating college and heading into nursing, my middle is transferring from a junior college to a 4 year college, and my youngest is graduating high school and deciding where she’ll go next. We’re in that final stretch of decisions, and for the first time as a parent, I really feel how much is out of my hands.

I’ve spent most of my life building structure, creating plans, and helping people move forward with clarity. It’s what I do in business, and honestly, it’s who I’ve always been. I’m the oldest of six, so I’ve been organizing chaos and trying to make things better for as long as I can remember.

But this season is different. There’s no perfect plan to build. No clean, controlled outcome to engineer. It’s just a lot of change happening all at once.

This year will be 24 years married to my high school sweetheart- someone I’ve known since I was 7. We’re about to become empty nesters, which feels both surreal and exciting. In the last 18 months we've started travelling a lot as we prep to be empty nesters and it's it's basically always centered around food. #willtravelforfood

I ❤️  cooking. I also tend to eat the same lunch on repeat for months before changing it. It's currently a can of Fishwife tuna, sauerkraut, cottage cheese with blueberries and a couple veggies. 

Our home is still full most weekends with big family dinners, 19 nieces and nephews, and more noise than you’d expect for people who are supposedly “winding down.”

Over the years, I’ve looked back at the recruiters who built real authority in their niche and the ones who didn’t.
What’s interesting is that the difference was rarely tactical.
It wasn’t the algorithm or their posting schedule or even the quality and originality of the content.

It was conviction.

The recruiters who struggled weren’t incapable. Most of them were highly competent, experienced, and respected by their clients. But when it came time to narrow their niche, take a clear position, and consistently speak to a specific hiring problem, they hesitated.

They softened their opinions, stayed way too broad and defaulted to safe and watered down language. Ultimately, they tried to serve everyone so as to not offend anyone. 

Authority isn’t built by posting more. It’s built by repeatedly reinforcing what you stand for and what hiring problem you lead. But that ONLY works if YOU actually believe you deserve to own that space.

You can’t position yourself as the authority in a category you’re still second-guessing internally.

The recruiters who grow the fastest eventually make a decision. Not a content decision- a conviction decision.

Once that happens, the strategy works differently. The content lands differently and t he market responds differently.

In a recruiting market that’s getting more automated and more crowded, hesitation is expensive. Conviction is what separates leaders from options.

If your initial response to AI is, “It will never replace recruiters,” that’s a risk.
I’m going to invite you to pause.
Not because you should panic, but because defensiveness is rarely a strategic position.

AI can replicate output. It cannot replicate inputs.

It can generate job descriptions, summarize candidate profiles, automate outreach, and surface talent faster than ever before. What it cannot replicate is the judgment you’ve built from years inside your niche. It cannot replicate the pattern recognition that tells you when a hiring team is misaligned. It cannot replicate the nuance of a conversation where the real risk isn’t the resume-  it’s the decision-making process behind it.

But here’s where many recruiters are exposed.

They are still positioning themselves around output. Around sourcing volume, process efficiency and the mechanics of execution. I read post after posts about process, speed and relationships thinking this is strengthening your advantage.

But, output is exactly what technology improves first.

When tools advance, the perceived value of tasks compresses. The market naturally shifts its attention upward -toward interpretation, decision clarity, risk reduction, and strategic guidance. In other words, toward the inputs.

If your market positioning is centered on execution, you are standing in the layer that is being optimized.

That doesn’t mean you’re replaceable. But, it definitely  means your market perception might be.

This is the pause I’m encouraging. 

A reassessment of where you sit in the value chain. 
Are you communicating that you operate above the tools-  that your involvement changes the business outcome? 
Or are you unintentionally blending into the layer that is becoming more commoditized by the month?

AI isn’t the threat. Staying positioned too low is.

The recruiters who thrive over the next few years won’t be the ones arguing that they can’t be replaced. They’ll be the ones who have clearly elevated how they are perceived so that while tools assist the work, they are the ones shaping the result.

This recruiter just signed client #21 from inbound alone.
No cold calls or chasing. A hiring manager saw his content, reached out, and said "you're exactly the type of recruiter I want to work with."

A lot of recruiters think marketing means constantly coming up with new things to say.
It doesn’t.

Marketing is mostly timing and consistency.

There’s something I’ve been noticing in conversations with recruiters lately.
A lot of firms feel “steady” right now. Not booming or struggling. Just… fine.
When I ask where most of their new business comes from, the answer is almost always the same: referrals and repeat clients.
And to be clear-  referrals are a beautiful thing. They mean you’ve done good work and that you’re trusted.

But referrals are not a strategy. They’re a byproduct.

The market we’re moving into doesn’t reward firms that simply do good work and wait to be remembered. It rewards firms that are visible, positioned, and unmistakably associated with something specific.

AI is accelerating execution. More recruiters are entering niche markets. Clients are becoming more selective about who they partner with long term. And in that kind of environment, revenue doesn’t disappear overnight. It compresses slowly. Margins tighten. Competition feels louder. Opportunities require more convincing.

The firms that remain steady aren’t the ones with the largest referral networks. 
They’re the ones who built authority before they needed it.
Referrals fluctuate. Authority compounds.

Recruiters, your clients don’t choose the “best” recruiter.
They choose the one who feels safest to hire.
And in business, safety almost always means "certainty".

There are two things that create that certainty long before a contract is signed.

1. A clear point of view.
The recruiter who can articulate the hiring problem better than the hiring manager can immediately shifts the power dynamic. When your perspective is sharp and specific, you don’t sound like an option- you sound like the expert.

2. Visible proof.
Not vague testimonials or name-dropping, but real context. What was broken, what changed, and what happened because of it. When buyers can see how you think and how you’ve solved similar problems, risk drops.

Most recruiters think (and wrongly market) that they need to win on relationships and speed. The ones who consistently win build certainty before the first call ever happens.

If your marketing isn’t building that confidence for you, you’re leaving too much  to chance.

Most recruiters don’t have a sales problem. They have a visibility problem. I fix that.

If you want to become the standard in your niche as a recruiter, the biggest thing to pay attention to is your positioning.
A lot of recruiters are creating content, sharing insights, talking about their process, and it’s all… fine. But when you step back and look at it honestly, it doesn’t really position them as the authority in their space. It sounds similar to what everyone else is saying, just in a slightly different voice.

That’s the difference between being visible and being uncopyable.

The recruiters who become the standard in their niche have a very clear point of view about the market they serve. Their content reflects how they think, what they believe about hiring, and the standards they hold their clients to. Over time, that perspective becomes recognizable, and people start to associate that niche with them.

Look at the things you’re putting out (your posts, your messaging, even the way you describe what you do)  and ask yourself honestly: 
Is this positioning me as the gold standard in my niche?
