Why resilience is the most important ROI when launching a brokerage. 

Starting a new brokerage is just about market knowledge or financial projections; rather, it was about offering something new. At the foundation of all successful businesses is stamina.

Resilience is the return that fuels every other form of ROI. It compounds through every challenge, delay, and near miss. Businesses and people do not grow in a straight line; mine had significant ebb and flow over the decades. Deals fall through, staff turns over, and markets shift. What determines long-term success isn’t avoiding setbacks, it’s how quickly you recover from them.

Challenges are set ups with the right mindset. For example, in the early days of ABSTRACT (spring 2020), I was told I had too many broadcasts being shared on a MLS portal that I had a paid subscription too...that other brokers were complaining. This seemed odd and at the same time, I couldn't help that I had 20+ active clients. The level up opportunity was that I used it as fuel to go to a "free" means of sharing (social media). In the immediate, it was disheartening and at the same time, I knew this would lead to something better....and it did.

When I launched ABSTRACT Commercial Real Estate, I learned that resilience is what keeps you grounded when progress feels slow and focused when things move fast. It’s the ability to hold your vision steady while adapting to the realities of growth. Financial returns will come and go, be wise in your allocation. But resilience builds the foundation that sustains your brand, your culture, and your confidence over time.

When I run through downtown Madison, I see more than streets and storefronts. I see stories unfolding, how people move, gather, and build community in the spaces around them.
