It’s International Wheelchair Day! For this occasion, here’s a little story: I've been considering the freedom an electric wheelchair offers. 

I started casually perusing at first, exploring options by going to stores, trying them out, just like you try out a car. But I didn’t expect to feel the fear that comes with independence. 

Many of us expect that once barriers disappear, people will rise to the occasion. This belief often drives initiatives in employee engagement or psychological safety. But systems run deep, and habits become autopilot when you're not looking. And THAT’S where the danger lies.

I had been so used to one way of life that the thought of something else terrified me. 

Point is, each person's journey is unique to them, and while you may theoretically understand the barriers experienced by someone whose identity is different from yours, it’s not the same as actually experiencing them. 

It’s also not the same as experiencing the sudden lack of it, when the internal barriers linger after the actual limitation is gone, driven by the voices that have told you you can't or shouldn't.

So, as I merrily browse electric wheelchair options, I'd love to leave you with this reflection: What invisible barriers have shaped your life, and what barriers have you subconsciously driven for others?

This International Women’s Day theme, Give to Gain, has me reflecting on the women who build safer, more humane workplaces every single day. Women who inspire me daily. Women whose voices and actions have left a lasting impact on mine and many others’ lives.

Lizbeth Gallardo Castillo is an exceptional operations powerhouse and corporate extraordinaire. She is an exceptional symbol of resilience. Lizbeth shows up every day as a connector, an inspiring leader to her teams, as a supportive friend, and as a dedicated mother to her children. 

Originally from Mexico, she has built a thriving and meaningful life here in the Netherlands. And whenever I'm down, she's the voice in my head that keeps me going, reminding me of what's possible despite all the bends and shapes in the road.

Ariella Rosen’s work with founders is nothing short of exceptional. When given the opportunity, she will transform the talent in her hands with patience and experience. She helped me better understand myself, my mind, my needs, and my challenges. 

Thanks to her, I managed to grow my business in ways I never thought possible. Her gift for operations and strategic foresight is unlike anything I have ever seen. But her superpower is her empathy. Who are the women who changed your outlook on life?

This International Women’s Day, I'm reflecting on the women who build safer, more humane workplaces every single day. Women who inspire me daily. Women whose voices and actions have left a lasting impact on mine and many others’ lives.

Ann Halvorsen is an exceptionally talented leader. She served as a pillar of grace and stability in times of uncertainty. Her journey teaches us that being a leader is never just about talent or capability. Rather, your responsibility as a leader is to establish connections. To make people feel safe enough and understood enough to bring their very best to work. I'll be forever thankful for this valuable lesson. 

Lisette Schipper’s passion burns brighter than the sun. Her determination allowed me to reconnect to my belief in myself. Before meeting Lisette, I believed that my fire and my joy needed to be as separate as possible from my professional identity. I thought maintaining stoicism and a sense of detachment was the best way to move forward. But to see Lisette's open-hearted, fierce advocacy for disabled and neurodivergent individuals inspires me to continue being my true self. That is the only way we can truly spark any change. 

Eva Baluchova is a shining example of genuineness and creativity in action. She stands in her power, speaks from deep expertise, and isn’t afraid to push boundaries in employer branding and employee experience. She shows what it looks like to navigate a differently wired mind while still creating transformative results within organizations.

Ann, Lisette, and Eva are living proof of the magic that happens when we're empowered by wonderful women.

Throwback to this great campaign released on World Down Syndrome Day for CoorDown. 

Its message is simple, but powerful: if the doors don’t open for all voices when making decisions, no decision will ever be truly inclusive. 

Beyond the catchy musical style, what really moves me is how clearly it reminds us that representation is not a “nice to have”. It is a condition for dignity, agency, and better decisions for everyone.

For leaders, it's an invitation to ask: who is missing from this conversation, and what would change if they were here?

In Matchr’s latest Talent Acquisition Trends report, one trend stood out to me: in an AI‑saturated market, the candidate experience becomes the differentiator.

Over-automation and “bot ghosting” are quietly damaging trust, and candidates are increasingly pushing back against cold, robotic hiring journeys. 

Talent leaders who will stand out are those who intentionally design processes where people feel seen, heard, and treated as humans rather than data points.

For HR and recruitment teams, this means asking: Where do we need human contact? Where can automation remove friction without removing empathy? And how do our employee experiences reflect the culture we say we want to build?
