In the 90’s, European fashion was still a force of creation, Armani in Italy, Dior in France, Burberry in the UK.
Yarns spinned in Germany and Austria, fabrics woven in Italy and Portugal, dyed in France and Spain, cut and sewn by skilled hands carrying generations of craft.
The Made in Europe label still meant something, quality, pride, innovation and industrial independence.

In 2025, the Europe wears Shein and Temu, garments made in Asia at a speed no artisan, factory, or ecosystem can match.
The value isn’t in the creation of the fabric anymore, it’s in the algorithm.

That’s what we call progress.

We went from creating value to outsourcing meaning.
From full mills to fashion weeks.
From textile engineers and dyers to consultants of “sustainability” and “storytelling.”

In the 90’s, the European textile sector employed 3.5 million people. Today, less than one million remain.
Production has dropped by more than 65% in three decades.

Italy, Portugal, and Spain still fight to preserve the know-how. France imports almost 95% of its clothes, and Germany dismantled most of its spinning and weaving capacity long ago.

Our looms fell silent.
Our dye houses became warehouses.
And our industrial schools turned into courses on “innovation strategy.”

Meanwhile, China multiplied its output 10X, now supplying over half of the world’s textiles.

In Europe we keep repeating the mantra:
“We’re leading the green transition.”

The truth is simple, factories went where energy is affordable, policies coherent, and production still respected.
We stayed with the narrative and the illusion that innovation can exist decoupled from industry.

Even the roots of our materials were cut.
Cotton once spun in Spain now comes from Pakistan.
Viscose from Indonesia.
Polyester from China.
All shipped thousands of kilometers, in the name of “sustainability.”

The logic is brilliant, we stop producing locally to reduce emissions, then import the same fabrics wrapped in plastic, powered by diesel.

While we debate ESG metrics and AI creativity, China and India rebuilt the full textile chain, and America is reindustrializing cotton.

Here, we lost the thread, literally and metaphorically.

Many of Europe’s “heritage” brands are no longer European:
SMCP, Lanvin, Wolford, Aquascutum — all under Chinese ownership.
Even the “sustainable fibers” of green Europe come mostly from Asia.

Europe now imports 80% of its textiles and exports less than 20%.
Dependence, deficit and vulnerability.

Some call it “evolution”, but it’s disconnection from craft, from value, from reality.

The modern European believes they’re advanced because they have second-hand platforms and carbon labels.
But we no longer have spinners, weavers, or sovereignty.

That’s the paradox of our time.
We confuse narratives with progress,
and comfort with prosperity.

Congratulations, Europe!!! We achieved the impossible, to deindustrialization with style.

Curiosity vs Tradition

In textiles, this duality isn’t abstract, it’s real, visible, and woven into every fiber.
It happens daily, between the hum of machines, the hands that guide them and the vision of who seeks to reinvent processes.

Curiosity drives us to reinvent.
Tradition reminds us why we began.

One opens the door to innovation.
The other keeps us grounded in craftsmanship, legacy, and identity.

Here’s my truth learned on the factory floor:
- Curiosity without tradition loses meaning.
- Tradition without curiosity loses relevance.
- The balance between both creates true evolution.

Innovation without roots becomes just noise, a nice story with no soul.
Heritage without reinvention becomes history, beautiful, but silent.

Real progress happens when we merge both, craftsmanship and technology, wisdom and wonder, humanity and automation.

So, the question for 1.000.000 € is:

Which one leads the way in your world curiosity or tradition?

If fashion wants a future, it must stop extracting value and start creating it together.

When Morgane Sezalory began selling vintage pieces online, she wasn’t building a brand she was building meaningful real trust.
Two decades later, Sézane, Soeur, Polène Paris, AMI PARIS, Loulou de Saison and others defined a new frontier called modern heritage. Digitally native, emotionally grounded, radically transparent.

In this new middle, €180 jeans carry more meaning than a €5,000 bag.
Not because they’re cheaper, but because they feel honest, built on material integrity, craft, and respectful margins, not illusion.

Consumers are running toward this world because they’re tired of fashion built on smoke and grey boxes.

Luxury’s price escalation snapped its own spell.

Fast fashion promised access but delivered waste.
Luxury promised excellence but delivered margins.

Between both extremes, reality collapsed:
A brand selling €1,500 jackets demands a €50 manufacturing price, fabric, lining, buttons, sewing, soul, squeezed into a number that destroys dignity.

Meanwhile, luxury houses spend €85,000 a year on office flowers.
Not wages.
Not skills.
Flowers.

This is no longer a fashion problem, it’s a cultural one.

We live in a world that celebrates:
- pride in ignorance
- hatred as identity
- individual gain over collective good

Where billionaires are admired more than the communities that raised us.
Where convenience outranks conscience.
Where “sustainability” becomes a campaign, not a commitment.

This cultural shift is why factories suffocate not from lack of talent, but lack of empathy.

The social fabric is tearing the same way supply chains are, from the bottom.

Factories close not because they fail, but because the system fails them.

After decades inside mills across Portugal and beyond, the pattern is always the same, incredible skill, resilience, and pressure that leaves no air for craft to breathe.

This is the fracture we must confront.

The most meaningful brands today share one thing, they do not build alone.

They build with their partners, their factories, their designers, their technical managers, their craftspeople who turn ideas into reality.

This is the real value of textiles, they carry the fingerprints of everyone involved.

Co-creation isn’t a trend it’s the antidote to an economy running proudly toward its own abyss.

The future belongs to those who choose:
- community over convenience
- craft over shortcuts
- transparency over theatrics
- truth over trend

Textiles are more than products. They are relationships woven into form, trust stitched into matter, culture materialized.

Fashion can only be beautiful when the people behind it don’t break.
Circularity doesn’t start with fiber-to-fiber, it starts with dignity-to-dignity collaboration.

If we want meaning back, we must rebuild the bridge between those who imagine and those who make.

The Portuguese textile industry is living one of those rare moments in history when everything can change. Digital has stopped being a tool… and has become the stage. And “Made in Portugal” is no longer a promise, it is strategically becoming “Created and Crafted in Portugal”.

On November 27, in Guimarães, we will finally discuss what for years has remained between the lines:

- How do we communicate, create value, and sell in a world where attention is the new currency and authenticity is the new luxury?

We live in a time of oversharing, overproduction, and overpromises. Fashion no longer competes with brands. Today it competes with algorithms.

Relevance has become volatile and the distance between creator and consumer has never been so short, but it has also never been so fragile.

And this is where Portugal holds something no technology can replicate, credibility, craftsmanship, and radical transparency. In this value equation, one truth remains, if we don’t know how to sell it with impact, intelligence, and strategy, someone else will do it for us.

This is why this event is urgent. Because if digital amplifies everything, then it’s time to amplify the right things. What we build, what we know, what we can transform.

The DIGI4FASHION – The Digital to Sell MADE IN PT it’s far from just another event. It is a reflection of a new Portugal. One that stands out for creative, collaborative, competitive, and strategically global.

I will share what I’ve learned in 27 years on factory floors, innovation labs, and international markets:

- How to build a digital presence without never losing industrial soul.
- How to sell knowledge and not not just a product.
- How to turn production into purpose, brands into movements, and content into conversion.

It will be a meeting point for those who believe that the future of our industry is not to simply produce for the world. The future is to become a reference for the world.

And that future will be built together, with consciousness, truth, and disruption.

Silence is the New Luxury

We live in a world where everything, even rebellion, has become a product.
Where authenticity can be design in a campaign, and sustainability unfortunately only a tagline.
Where “different” can be just another filter to sell the same story.

We produce 100 billion garments every year.
40% never get sold.
Somehow we still found a way to call it growth.
But it’s not progress, it’s noise.

We’ve been lead to mistaken visibility for true value, speed for intelligence and consequently volume for success.

When we thought about Luxury this used to mean abundance.
Now, it means knowing when to stop, only because the rarest thing today isn’t what we can buy, because we can have it all, it’s what we choose to refuse.

New generations and especially Gen Z already feels it:
- the true rebellion isn’t louder, it’s quieter.
- It’s turning off the phone.
- It’s rejecting optimization.
- It’s creating true related meaning instead of performance.

“Enough” is no more mediocrity, it’s the opposite. It’s mastery, it’s the wisdom to make  much less, but mean a lot more.
To build circular, intentional, regenerative.

The future of luxury, and all business models that will thrive isn’t excess, it’s essence.
And the next revolution, that already started and we are feeling it bubbling, won’t be viral, it It will start in silence, with those brave enough to listen, to slow down, and to create enough.

Three simple truths:

Small brands dare. 
Small brands innovate. 
Small brands care.

Meanwhile, mass-market luxury lives in a paradox, selling dreams while manufacturing mediocrity.

I’ve spent more than 27 years inside textile mills, dye houses, finishing lines, and design rooms. I’ve watched how real craftsmanship disappears the moment margins take the lead. And I’ve seen how the most powerful ideas, the ones that shift culture, are born in rooms with no marble floors, no corporate perfume, no shareholder pressure.

Just humans. 
Craft. 
Purpose.
Boldness.
Untamed willingness for change.

Price is far from being quality.
Logos are not identity.
Scale is not creativity.

A €20 tee becomes a €500 “luxury” hero piece? That’s not craftsmanship, that’s psychological engineering wrapped in marketing.

I’ve sat in meetings where €1,000 hoodies had to be produced under €30.
Fabric, garment dyeing, sewing, printing, fading, finishing squeezed into a number that destroys the soul of the product.

And every year, the same story and we pretend we don’t see it.

Because here’s the pattern (and I’ve lived this across Europe, the US, and beyond):
- Big brands follow.
- Small brands lead.
- Conglomerates copy.

Not an opinion, it’s a documented cycle.

And when shareholders demand margins, the chain reacts:
Design gets simplified.
Quality gets sacrificed.
Craft gets diluted.
Artisans get cheaper.
Transparency evaporates.

This is why small brands feel different.
Their creativity is raw. Their risk appetite is real. Their ethics show up in every decision because they don’t have a choice, they build with integrity or they don’t build at all.

If we truly want innovation, ethics, and regeneration in fashion, we need to urgently flip the system. 

Support the creators, the innovators, the ones who show you transparently the real hands behind the product.

Small brands aren’t just “better.”
They are the spark, the engine, the living lab where fashion still feels human, and where we feel the real joy of co-creation.

Our industry’s future won’t be built by logos, it will be built by real, transparent and honest stories.

If you want a better fashion system, the choice is simple, choose truth, value and creation.

When we support a small brand, we’re not just buying a product, we’re voting for a culture where creativity wins, communities rise, and innovation finally has space to breathe.

And that is how fashion will become meaningful again.

Secondhand is no longer a side market, it’s becoming the centre of gravity.
Platforms like Vinted now understand the real battlefield has moved, from price and convenience to cultural authority.

And the latest McKinsey & Company  x The Business of Fashion  State of Fashion report proves exactly why this shift is so important, 46% of fashion executives expect industry conditions to worsen in 2026, and their biggest fear isn’t supply chains, costs, or geopolitics, it’s consumer behaviour!

We are witnessing a silent but powerful and rapidly seismic migration of desire.

While consumers are actively searching for value, quality, and longevity, the industry is retreating from sustainability, so much so that not a single circularity topic appears in the 2025 Top 10 themes of the report.
A perfect example of strategic blindness.

Consumers are already rewriting the rules:
- 62% feel an emotional connection to the brands they buy.
- 43% care more about quality than ever before.
- The secondhand market is projected to hit $317 billion by 2027, growing 2–3× faster than first-hand from 2025–2027.
- 61% will continue to buy secondhand even if they had more money, driven by uniqueness, meaning, and the thrill of the hunt.

Some are pushing for the feeling of price sensitivity, this is cultural reprogramming!!!

And Vinted and Vestiaire Collective  saw it coming. Not by launching new features, but by launching a Prime Video upcycling competition, positioning secondhand not as an economic alternative, but as an aspirational, creative, culturally magnetic choice.

Jessie de la Merced said it perfectly:

“By showing secondhand in aspirational, story-driven formats, we’re shaping culture around what fashion’s future can look like.”

Culture, not compliance, is what changes behaviour.

The paradox is that sustainability is disappearing from boardrooms at the exact moment consumers are demanding meaning, quality, and emotional connection. In 2026, as nearly three-quarters of executives plan to raise prices, any brand that increases price without increasing value, craft, or cultural relevance will not only lose customers, they will destroy their own equity.

The winners will be the ones who understand that the most powerful form of resistance is the clothing already in existence.
And the most powerful driver of adoption is storytelling, not messaging, not metrics, but culture. Culture eats everything at breakfast!!!

If you’re struggling, for 2026 make circularity desirable, make true honest value visible, make meaningful storytelling non-negotiable. The next era of fashion won’t be won through production volume, but through cultural influence.

If we shape the story, we shape the market.
And if we shape the market, we shape the future.

The meaning of a gift.

The season has only started and John Lewis & Partners has already won the best add. In a world where everything is disposable, even our emotions start to feel temporary.
We buy gifts because we can, not because they matter. Another click. Another package. Another thing.

Then comes John Lewis new Christmas campaign. Simple. Silent. Touching everyone.
We’ve built a culture where even love feels outsourced.
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas…
It all merges into one endless scroll of offers, urgency, and profound emptiness.
We forgot that the most powerful gifts can’t be boxed, discounted, or delivered next-day.

This season, don’t just buy more.
Buy meaning.
Stay true to yourself.
Stay close to those who matter.
Give something that connects, not something that replaces.

Sometimes when we deeply search within, a simple record can carry more soul than all the screens in the world.

We’ve entered the Age of synthetic perfection.

AI no longer imitates us, it anticipates us in every aspect of our lives.
Sounds, images, emotions, all generated seamlessly in seconds.
Everything flawless but nothing real.

The irony in this overwhelming reality is that human error has become a luxury.

We feel that when everything sounds perfect, nothing moves us.
Art loses texture, Music loses soul and Fashion loses skin.
Creativity, sterilized, becomes predictable.


In contrast is where deep meaning lives.
Contrast between analog and digital.
Contrast between soul and software.
Contrast between human and machine.

Rosalía placed an orchestra inside Berghain, and it isn’t art direction it is a manifesto.
High art colliding with club culture.
Organic clashing with synthetic.
With this contrast we feel tension, see the beauty and deep breathing the real thruth.

In 2025 onwards, the most radical act isn’t using the newest tech, it’s creating with heart, with flaws, with humanity and being completely transparent with it.

Being human is the new punk.
Contrast is the new perfection.
Imperfection is the new luxury.

Societies demand art, design, and innovation that feel alive again, they don’t need more perfection, all they need is presence.
