I glimpsed the future after chatting with Ahmed Abdelrahman, CTO of Bayzat, the region’s top HR tech platform.

A great CTO doesn’t just follow the ball, they see where it’s going. 

Which is easier said than done in these bizarre times.

After our chat, it was clear that Ahmed has the key traits needed from tech leaders in this phase:

1- They know old playbooks won’t work anymore

They’re rewriting new ones like scientists; running experiments with AWS and
Amazon Bedrock to measure real ROI and testing innovations gradually with their 3,000+ clients.

2- They work backwards from the customer

They know that the underlying technology isn’t what matters, it’s how it helps solve a business problem for the end user. And if it doesn’t, then it shouldn't be forced as the solution.

3- They understand culture and user psychology

Every organization is a bit different, and how they navigate different company structures, cultures, and technical maturities across regions is key to providing scalable value. 

SO...I’m working on some exciting new content with Ahmed and other key technical leaders in the region, exploring how these pioneers are striking the balance between autonomy and control when integrating agents into their platforms for this brave new world.

Community is a hot topic in 2020. Enterprises, startups, investors, entrepreneurs, and creators are all jumping on board launching communities or building products for communities. This is especially timely given a global pandemic that has left people longing for human connection.

And then there are the people like me who just wanted to bring salespeople together. When I started the Enterprise Sales Forum, I did not have a big vision; it was just my way to convince salespeople and startup founders to meet and help each other. What started in a sweaty conference room for 50 people six years ago eventually blossomed into a community of 30,000 members across 24 chapters globally.

Community-in-a-Box is a how-to guide into building and scaling a community from the ground up or reinvigorating existing communities. From the experiences of the Enterprise Sales Forum and other communities I have launched, I weave those stories into a book that leads you past the minefields and mistakes so you can confidently launch and grow a healthy community.

Even though we all come to community building with our own motivations, the end result is a labor of love that positively impacts the lives of many. Through this book, you will also feel the impact of the power of community and what it takes to grab the spark and start a movement!

I am a community builder, author, software entrepreneur, business development expert, and startup founder from New York City and based in Taipei, but most often on a plane traveling the globe. 

I previously worked at AWS sharing the stories of how founders across the globe benefit from building and scaling their startups on AWS. In that capacity, I create content, speak & present, and enable my colleagues to build thriving startup communities. During that time, I also created a fast growing Founders in the Cloud newsletter for startup founders with over 6,000 subscribers.

Before AWS, I was at Stack Overflow to help launch and commercialize their SaaS Q&A platform and then led efforts to expand business in APAC working with C-level executives to help them understand how to improve software delivery performance and team collaboration.

I launched DEV.BIZ.OPS, a long standing community for technology leaders about coding, developers, engineering enablement, and the power of communities.

I also founded the Enterprise Sales Forum, a global community of 25,000 B2B sales professionals that meet in-person and virtually through local chapters to share ideas, network with peers, and learn new skills. 

I also worked at a diverse group of leading technology companies including Oracle, E.piphany and Siebel in individual contributor and leadership roles.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Boston University. In my non-working hours, I like to tour around Chinatown exploring dumplings shacks, and I can generally be seen rocking out to extreme metal.

I'm releasing my Business Model Workshop curriculum as open source.

Last month I taught a two-part session on business model fundamentals to entrepreneurship students at National Chengchi University.

Afterwards they asked if I would share my content. When I said yes, they seemed surprised. Most guest lecturers preferred to guard their content.

Sure, I could have done the same and hoarded my slides to offer as a paid course online. I am sure I could have made some money.

But here’s something I learned over the years:

“What we keep to ourselves stagnates. What we share compounds.”

This has been a guiding principle from my experience building communities. People who hoard their knowledge stay small. The people who give it away freely launch movements.

It’s a pattern I have seen often. The consultant who guards their "secret methodology" gets hired once. The one who teaches publicly builds a following that feeds them opportunities for years.

The entrepreneur who shares their learnings gets invited to speak, advise, and collaborate. The one who treats knowledge as competitive advantage stays isolated.

That's not unhinged generosity or lack of entrepreneurial drive. That is how value works. Every time I've given away what I know, I've gotten back more than I gave: better ideas, unexpected connections, and opportunities that I could not have imagined.

That’s why I am sharing my business modeling content on GitHub for anyone to freely use, modify, and contribute to. That includes a two-part course with over 110 slides in different formats on Lean Canvas, revenue models, and validation frameworks, complete speaker notes, 5 interactive workshops, student templates, and teaching guides.
