The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has launched a $3M / 3-year Generative AI initiative to help local governments move beyond the hype and responsibly harness GenAI for real service delivery.

The program is being led by Harvard Kennedy School’s Data-Smart City Solutions, under Professor Stephen Goldsmith, supporting a cohort of 10 cities — and importantly:

✅ Philadelphia is one of only 3 cities nationally (with Boulder, CO and San José, CA) selected for deeper support — including an embedded fellow placed directly inside City Hall to help build internal capacity and accelerate responsible adoption.

Why this matters 👇
