I made the same mistake at the peak of my corporate career.

I’m not saying quit your job.

I’m saying build Career Autonomy WHILE you’re employed.

So when the time comes(and it will)you have options.

The last ten days fundamentally altered the rhythm of our lives.

The disruptions we are experiencing now remind me of how deeply interconnected we truly are.

My days are usually spent helping leaders find their voice, build their presence, and navigate corporate challenges. 

But this week, the conversations have shifted. 

I have spoken with brilliant professionals who are struggling to focus, leaders who are trying to project strength while quietly managing their own anxieties, and expatriates who are constantly checking their phones for news from home or worrying about the safety of their loved ones.

We often talk about "bringing our whole selves to work," but what does that mean when our whole selves are exhausted, worried, and grieving?

In my 15 years of professional experience, I have learned that true leadership is not about having all the answers or maintaining a facade of invulnerability. 

It is about holding space for the uncomfortable realities. 

It is about acknowledging that it is okay if productivity is not at 100% right now. 

It is about looking at the person across the table (or the screen) and recognizing their humanity before their job title.

The human disruption is what requires our immediate attention. 
We cannot simply "business as usual" our way through this.

To the leaders reading this: 
Your teams are watching how you respond. 

They don't need you to solve the geopolitical crisis. 
They need you to show empathy. 
They need you to offer flexibility. 

They need you to say, "I know this is hard, and I am here to support you."

To the professionals feeling overwhelmed: 
Your silence right now is not a sign of weakness; it is a natural response to trauma and uncertainty. 
But please, do not isolate yourself. 
Reach out to your network, lean on your colleagues, and give yourself the grace to process what is happening.

Resilience does not mean ignoring the pain; it means moving through it together.

Check on your colleagues. 
Be patient with your clients. 

And above all, be kind to yourselves.

Being the smartest person in the room means nothing if you don't speak up.

If you can't express your idea at the right moment, in the right way it's as if you never had it at all.

Episode #22 — Your Silence Is Not Humility. It's Invisibility.

I’ve led billion-riyal strategies.

Sat across from ministers.
Delivered national plans under midnight deadlines.
Built cultures, guided boards, & transformed high-stakes rooms.

But the work that changed me was never in the "strategy decks".

It was in the silences.

The moments when a high-performing leader looked at me and said,

 “I can’t do this anymore.”

That’s where my real work began.

I didn’t become a coach.
I’ve always been one.

For over 15 years, I led national teams, crisis projects, and board-level strategies.

Center of government. Vision 2030. KPMG.
CSO. Principal. Head of PMO.

Projects worth billions.

Environments where most lasted months. I stayed years.

But what I was really doing  was ‘listening’.


Reading between the lines.
Holding space in rooms where no one else would.

I’ve sat in boardrooms where no one said what they really felt.


Ministry-level meetings.

Where decisions moved billions.
Where timelines were impossible.
Where silence felt safer than honesty.

Where leaders smiled but quietly carried doubt, exhaustion, and fear.

There was a feeling of heaviness.

And my first instinct was to fix it.

Figure out what caused it.
Solve it.
Move past it.

But there was nothing to fix.

It was just an emotion that needed space.

And I didn't know how to give it that.

Because I'd spent years learning how to hold space for others,

But never taught myself how to hold space for myself.

Not every emotion needs to be resolved.

Some just need to be witnessed.

Some emotions need time before they even make sense.

It’s about having patience.

The kind that allows you to feel
without immediately turning the feeling into a task.

I’m learning to sit with myself.

It has been a lot quieter than any leadership training.

But it has been the most transformative.

After all, the leaders who navigate complexity aren’t the ones who never feel uncertain.

They're the ones who can stay present with uncertainty
without needing to rush it into clarity.

I was the bottleneck in something I built to flow.

It took me a quiet Tuesday to see it.

There wasn’t any crisis.
No one urgently needed me.

The work was moving, and things were… fine.

And that’s what unsettled me.

I noticed I was still explaining things that no longer needed explanation.

The team didn’t really need it.

But I didn’t know how to stop.

And then suddenly this happened:

A decision was made without me.

And it was solid.

I should feel relieved that my team could handle it so well.
Instead, I felt uncomfortable.

That’s because of the real issue behind it.

My leadership had evolved.
But my identity hadn’t caught up yet.

I've seen this pattern in almost every senior leader I've mentored.

They've built strong teams and created real systems. 
They’ve developed people who are genuinely ready.

But they keep showing up the same way they did when none of that existed.

That’s their habit.

And it’s because of their old belief,
that being useful means being present everywhere.

That's a quiet leadership trap.

When the system grows, but the leader doesn't adjust how they show up, 
involvement starts adding weight instead of value.

You become the bottleneck in something you built to flow.

I know it had to be solved.

I had to stop myself from showing up everywhere.

I started showing up in moments that required judgment.

Because it wasn’t just about presence now.

Letting go just helped me clarify my impact.

After all, smart leadership is to know when your involvement strengthens the system,
and when it quietly weakens it.

P.S. Have you ever micromanaged your team as a leader?

When we’re emotionally triggered,
the part of the brain that reacts first is the amygdala.

It sends a signal that floods your body with stress hormones.

That’s why your hand shake.

Your heart starts racing.

And you even see a change in your breathing.

It's your brain's way of preparing you to fight or defend.

I’ve felt this more times than I can count.

In boardrooms at the Royal Court.
In tense strategy sessions.

I’ve noticed my body to already react before my mind even catches up.

But the science says different.

It takes about three seconds for your rational brain to come back online.

That’s the moment when logic returns.

So when you take three seconds to pause, 
you're not suppressing emotion.

You're creating space for clarity.

I remember one meeting where someone challenged a decision I'd made. 

Publicly. In front of the entire team.

My chest tightened immediately. 

Every instinct told me to respond fast, sharp, and defensive.

But I didn't.

I took three seconds.

Took a deep breath and let my nervous system settle.

And when I finally spoke, it wasn't from defense. 

It was from clarity.

That pause didn't make me look weak.

The team saw my steadiness,
and how I react when pressure hits.

P.S. When was the last time you felt your body react before your mind could catch up?

My team was getting weaker because of ME.

They delivered everything as requested.

It was on time and technically correct.

I know I should feel satisfied.
Instead, I was disappointed.

I reviewed everything and found no mistakes.

That’s when it hit me.

My clarity had done all the work for them.

I framed everything too precisely for them.

I removed every uncertainty,
before they even had a chance to sit with it.

I even removed ownership from the equation.

The problem wasn’t with my team.

It was in me because I was over-guiding them.

I've done this more than I'd like to admit.

Especially under pressure, when time feels short, and the stakes feel high.

You give people everything they need to execute.

You give them clear directions.
You leave no room for confusion.

And the task gets done.

But something quieter gets lost in the process.

The moment when someone has to figure something out themselves.

That moment reveals someone’s true capability.
But excessive clarity removes it.

I didn’t really have to be vague.

But I just had to start being selective.

Now, I'm intentional about where I offer clarity and where I deliberately leave space.

I make the why unmistakable. I define what can't move.

And then I stop.

I resist completing the picture.

I understood that I didn’t have to make everything obvious.

I had to leave out space for the room to emerge.

Too little clarity creates chaos. Too much creates compliance.

Maturity lives in the balance.

Do you also have that habit of over-explaining?

"I thought you already knew."

Four words that explained why our $2M initiative was quietly failing.

It was a solid plan.
Everyone nodded in agreement.

Three weeks later, execution started wobbling.

Nothing dramatic.
Just subtle friction.

Small adjustments where there shouldn’t have been any.
Energy slightly off.

At first, I assumed resistance.
Then capability.

I was wrong.

It was a side conversation that stopped me.

"I thought you already knew."

That was it.

The issue wasn’t misalignment.
It was assumption.

I assumed silence meant understanding.
I thought momentum meant clarity.

As leaders, we’re especially vulnerable to this.

People assume we see more than we do.
So they stay quiet.

Not out of fear.
Out of assumption.

And that’s how gaps form.

Plans move forward
with missing context.

I’ve seen this pattern repeat across high-stakes strategy rooms.

Alignment feels real.
Next steps feel clear.

Then weeks later, someone is quietly struggling
because one critical piece of information never made it into the room.

The solution wasn’t asking more questions.

It was changing the signal I was sending.

Now I interrupt certainty early.

I ask:

"What feels obvious to you that hasn’t been said out loud?"

"What assumption are we making that we should test?"

Those questions surface what silence hides.

Because what isn’t said
often matters more than what is confidently agreed on.

What might your team be assuming you already know, but you don’t?

And when was the last time you created space for someone to say it?

Leaders who set clear boundaries experience 40% less burnout.

And that has nothing to do with your respect.

Because people aren’t following leaders who never say no.

They follow the ones whose "no" has meaning behind it.

Whenever you say ‘yes’ when you mean ‘no,’
your brain treats it like a threat.

Your cortisol spikes.
Your body goes into silent defense mode.

That’s because your nervous system knows the truth.

I learned this the hard way at the Royal Court.

Years of saying yes to everything.

Years of believing that boundaries would make me look difficult.

Until my body started keeping score in ways I couldn't ignore.

I experienced exhaustion that sleep didn't fix.

A tightness in my chest before meetings I used to handle easily.

My mind was still saying yes.

But my body had stopped agreeing.

I knew I needed boundaries.

And once I created them, I was protecting my capacity.

It doesn’t mean I was doing less.
I was just avoiding being constantly overridden.

That made a big change.

Now when I mentor leaders, I don’t just teach them how to say ‘yes’ better.

I teach them how to say ‘no’ clearly.

P.S. What’s one boundary at work that you need to set but haven’t yet?

I watched the room move from decision to doubt in 30 seconds of silence.

The room was loud and busy.

Ideas were bouncing.
People building on each other’s points.

And even the timelines where moving forward faster than they needed to.

I sat there quietly.

I was listening to every detail.

But I didn’t say a word.
Not because I didn’t have an opinion.

But something was just feeling early.

Halfway through, someone looked at me and said:

"So... what do you think?"

I didn't answer right away.

I took a long pause. 
The uncomfortable one.

The room slowed.

People started qualifying what they'd just said.

I still hadn't spoken.

And that's when I realized something I hadn't named before.

My silence was doing more work than my input would have.

I've seen this pattern play out dozens of times at the Royal Court.

Rooms full of smart people moving fast. 
Building energy and riding momentum.

And sometimes, the best thing a leader can do is... nothing.

Not because you don't know what to say. 
But because the room doesn't need direction yet.

It needs deceleration.

We talk a lot about leadership presence as contribution.

But we rarely talk about restraint.

The discipline of not filling space just because you can.

Silence, when chosen intentionally is intervention.

It interrupts performance.
It allows the room to think again with clarity.

Since then, I use silence differently.

I use it as my power move.

Because some rooms don't need more voices. 

They need space to hear what's already been said.

And the leader who can slow a room down often changes the outcome without saying much at all.

Where might saying less create more clarity right now?

P.S. Have you ever zoned out in an important meeting?

People listen differently when you speak from calm, not chaos.

I never really understood this earlier.

But there was this tense meeting at the Royal Court.

Timelines were collapsing.

And everyone was waiting for directions.

I was feeling that pressure build up in my chest.

I felt that urge to respond immediately and show that I had control.

But my mind told me to stop.

I paused for three seconds.

I let my body catch up to the moment.

That deep breath slowed down my heart rate.

And when I finally spoke,
the room listened with interest.

It wasn’t like the answer was something different.

But they saw that change in the energy behind it.

I didn’t understand what happened back then, but I do know it now.

According to the American Psychological Association, pausing for just three seconds before reacting can cut emotional reactivity in half.

There’s physiology behind this.

Those few seconds activate the vagus nerve,
which helps regulate your nervous system.

Your body sees this as a safety signal.

And once your body feels safe, your mind becomes clear.

From that day, I’ve used this in every high-pressure conversation.

Three seconds. That’s it.

It helps me arrive fully before I speak.

And when you lead from calm, not chaos,
they trust you differently.

P.S. Do you ever pause in a conversation to contain your thoughts?

One right decision in the boardroom kept haunting me at night.

It happens sometimes.

I make a decision as a leader that feels clear at the moment.

I listen to everything.
I weigh the information.

And then I decide.

There’s no hesitation or doubt.

But when the day ends,
it haunts me quietly.

It’s not like the decision was wrong.

But it carried a lot of weight.

I remember one particular decision very well.

It was about a team restructure.

Strategically sound.
Necessary for the work ahead.
The right call.

So, I delivered it with clarity.

The meeting ended.

Everyone nodded.

But while I was sitting alone that night,
the decision came back to me.

I kept seeing the face of the person whose role shifted.

The way they held composure.

The small pause before they said, "I understand."

I used to wonder why certain decisions stayed with me.

Why they echoed long after the meeting ended.

Why couldn't I just move on.

But now I understand that 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬.

It follows you.

It comes back to help you find meaning.

After all, some choices need silence to be fully understood.

To honor both the decision and the weight of it.

And leadership includes making space for that silence
instead of rushing past it.

I don't replay decisions because I doubt myself.

I replay them because they mattered.

Because someone's reality shifted.

That awareness keeps me grounded.

A good leader feels the weight
and knows how to lead anyway.

P.S. Do you ever think about a boardroom decision after you sit in silence?

I accomplished everything on my list yesterday and felt nothing.

No satisfaction. No relief.

Just… emptiness.

There was this one season at the Royal Court.

4 years of high-stakes pressure.
4 years of showing up composed.

And I kept telling:

“I’ll deal with myself later.”

It wasn’t exactly burnout or collapse.

It was a distance.

Distance from myself.
Distance from what mattered.

I noticed it in small ways.

The way I'd zone out mid-conversation at home.

The way rest didn't restore me anymore.

The way I'd accomplished everything on the list,
but felt nothing when I did.

And still, I told myself: "Later. I'll deal with it later."

But that later never came.

The pace didn't slow.
The demands didn't stop.

And the signal I'd been ignoring?

It didn't get louder.

It just got quieter.

Until I almost couldn't hear it anymore.

It’s because resilience isn’t endurance at any cost.

It’s awareness.

It's the ability to notice when something inside you is asking for attention.

Before it turns into distance, exhaustion, or quiet resentment you can't quite explain.

Listening early doesn't make you fragile.

It keeps you intact.

It allows you to respond rather than override yourself.

Resilience, at least for me, has become less about pushing forward.

It’s more about staying connected to what's happening underneath while still choosing to move.

Now, when I mentor leaders navigating pressure,

I don't ask them how much they can handle.
I ask them what they're noticing.

What's asking for attention.

What they've been telling themselves can wait.

The leaders who last aren’t the ones who never feel the strain.

They’re the ones who listen to it early.

P.S. What goal are you working towards in Q1?

I almost sent the email that would’ve created a $2M problem three weeks later.

It was a decision everyone was waiting for.

The meeting had gone well.
Clear next steps.

But something felt off.

I could feel my jaw tightening.

And I was holding my breath like I was bracing for impact.

My gut told me to stop.

So I pulled my hand back from the keyboard.

And asked myself one question:

Am I sending this because it’s right or because I just need it done?

That’s when I realized something that is rarely talked about.

We don’t make bad decisions because we lack information.

We make them because we’re carrying too much,
and we need relief more than we need clarity.

I’ve watched this happen a lot.

Senior leaders making calls that looked efficient in the moment,
but created more problems three weeks later.

It’s not because they didn’t know better.

But because they were operating from a full system.

When you're mentally and emotionally maxed out,
your brain stops optimizing for the best answer.

It starts optimizing for closure.

For anything that gets the weight off your chest.

And in that moment, "done" feels like progress.

Until the cost shows up later.

More resistance than you expected.

More energy required to sustain something that should've been simple.

So now, before I commit to anything that matters,
I pause.

I pause only for ten minutes.

A moment to let my nervous system catch up to my brain.

Because the best decisions don’t drain you.

They free capacity.

That’s how you know you’re choosing from alignment.
