5 signs your current career strategy is a ticking time bomb:

I made the same mistake at the peak of my corporate career.

I thought a strong results, and internal credibility
meant I was safe.

I thought staying quiet was “professional.”
That visibility was risky.
That loyalty would be rewarded.

Then I watched restructurings wipe out people with 20+ years of experience.
AI accelerate faster than job titles.
And brilliant leaders become “redundant” overnight.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Invisibility feels safe until it becomes your biggest risk.

Most leaders hit by restructuring aren’t weak performers.
They’re strong operators with zero external positioning.

Inside the company: respected.
Outside the company: unknown.

And if your value disappears the moment your corporate email does,
that’s not stability.

That’s fragility.

The leaders who will survive what’s coming
aren’t louder, younger, or trendier.

They’re visible before they need to be.

Sit with that.
Then rethink how you’re positioning yourselfwhile you still have the choice.

I might lose friends over this, but:

Staying in one company for 15+ years without building external relevance is career suicide in 2026.

Here’s why I’m willing to bet my reputation on it:

Because loyalty doesn’t protect you anymore.

AI eliminates roles. Restructuring is constant. And the longer you stay invisible in one company, the harder it is to pivot when you’re forced to.

I’m not saying quit your job.

I’m saying build Career Autonomy WHILE you’re employed.

So when the time comes(and it will)you have options.

Most people ignore “feeling invisible at work.”

They think: “It’s fine. I’m still getting my paycheck.”

But in 6 months, that turns into:

The last ten days fundamentally altered the rhythm of our lives.

The disruptions we are experiencing now remind me of how deeply interconnected we truly are.

My days are usually spent helping leaders find their voice, build their presence, and navigate corporate challenges. 

But this week, the conversations have shifted. 

I have spoken with brilliant professionals who are struggling to focus, leaders who are trying to project strength while quietly managing their own anxieties, and expatriates who are constantly checking their phones for news from home or worrying about the safety of their loved ones.

We often talk about "bringing our whole selves to work," but what does that mean when our whole selves are exhausted, worried, and grieving?

In my 15 years of professional experience, I have learned that true leadership is not about having all the answers or maintaining a facade of invulnerability. 

It is about holding space for the uncomfortable realities. 

It is about acknowledging that it is okay if productivity is not at 100% right now. 

It is about looking at the person across the table (or the screen) and recognizing their humanity before their job title.

The human disruption is what requires our immediate attention. 
We cannot simply "business as usual" our way through this.

To the leaders reading this: 
Your teams are watching how you respond. 

They don't need you to solve the geopolitical crisis. 
They need you to show empathy. 
They need you to offer flexibility. 

They need you to say, "I know this is hard, and I am here to support you."

To the professionals feeling overwhelmed: 
Your silence right now is not a sign of weakness; it is a natural response to trauma and uncertainty. 
But please, do not isolate yourself. 
Reach out to your network, lean on your colleagues, and give yourself the grace to process what is happening.

Resilience does not mean ignoring the pain; it means moving through it together.

Check on your colleagues. 
Be patient with your clients. 

And above all, be kind to yourselves.

Being the smartest person in the room means nothing if you don't speak up.

If you can't express your idea at the right moment, in the right way it's as if you never had it at all.

Episode #22 — Your Silence Is Not Humility. It's Invisibility.

Hello, I’m Carolina, and I help founders, senior professionals, and purpose-led brands shape how they’re seen, understood, and remembered, especially in moments of transition, reinvention, or growth.

For the longest time, I believed I had a personal brand.

I spent 14 years as a journalist covering lifestyle and news, followed by nearly seven years leading PR and communications for a Dubai Government entity. I built teams, ran campaigns, handled crises, and trusted my work would speak for itself.

Then the world shifted.

In the thick of Covid, I stepped into consultancy. I introduced myself on a call and said, “Hi, I’m Carolina.”
The voice on the other end replied: “Carolina… from where?”

That moment stuck.

It made me realize that reputation doesn’t build itself. We owe it to ourselves to define the story before someone else does it for us.

So, as a re-introduction: I’m a storyteller at heart, and an advisor by choice, working at the intersection of strategy, positioning, and storytelling.

Since 2020, I’ve led brand strategy and storytelling projects across healthcare, finance, retail, and social impact. I’ve worked with people and brands in moments of clarity, chaos, and everything in between.

There were plenty of photos.
But what stayed with me were the conversations.

There is something powerful about meeting someone in person for the first time when you already know their thinking, voice, and journey, in this case through LinkedIn.

Unexpectedly, I had the chance to meet several from my LinkedIn universe in real life.

Some greetings began with, “Omg, it’s you”, followed by references to past posts or passions we already knew about each other.

What followed was something no platform, and certainly no AI, can replace. The warmth in someone’s voice. The energy in their presence. The human details that leave a feeling, not just an impression.

What were once only comments and DMs turned into moments etched into memory with people I have interacted with and deeply respected for their work and perspective.

And of course, new hellos over canapés that somehow also found their way back to, “We met here, let’s connect on LinkedIn too.”

It reinforced something I have long believed: visibility without purpose is just noise. 

Platforms amplify visibility and drive recall, but credibility is built in lived moments, rooted in your values and in closing the gap between who you are online and who you are in the real world.

For founders and senior professionals, credibility is decided by whether the person in the room matches the story people have come to know online.

This alignment is the actual work.

Many thanks to Nancy for the kind invitation, whose journey I have long admired in the wellbeing space and followed since featuring her founder story on #BeyondCubicles.

So here is to building real-life ecosystems while leveraging platforms like LinkedIn to deepen trust and collaboration.

Haya Kalbouneh gave herself permission to build what she wished existed, a product about identity, language, and belonging for children. 

For her, motherhood was the catalyst.  

"I wanted Arabic to feel close and natural for my daughter and I couldn’t find tools.” 

As she spoke to other parents, she realized she wasn’t alone. “So the leap was launching something that helps families teach Arabic in a way that builds connection to their language and heritage.” 

That became Masa wa Mansour, an early learning brand helping families introduce Arabic at home in a way that feels “light, playful, and intentional with screen time”. Masa means ‘diamond’ in Arabic, “a nod to how precious our language is,” and Mansour, her dinosaur friend, makes learning fun. 

Rooted in research and play-based learning, she says Arabic shouldn’t feel foreign in an Arab home. “It should feel easy, especially in the early years, when kids are forming their first relationship with language.” 

As Haya built, parents she didn’t know began sending messages saying it felt like them, that their child had said an Arabic word, and that it was the first time Arabic had not felt like a fight but something their children now asked for. Some shared that this was not just content, but something changing the energy around Arabic in the home, and that it mattered. 

Yet behind those affirmations was a far more complex internal journey and the constant switching between confidence and doubt. 

In a job, she explains the role is clear, but when building something of your own, you become everything: product, marketing, customer support, strategy, and operations. What helped was speaking to parents and educators, observing what children respond to, and staying focused on the problem. 

As she built for her own daughter and other children and families, her identity and brand evolved from “professional” to “professional + mother + builder”, adding, “motherhood doesn’t weaken your edge, it sharpens it”. 

Originally from Palestine and born and raised in Jordan, she came to Dubai for work and started her family here. “Dubai was a front-row seat to the exact problem [I faced as a mother].”

This week’s featured founder: Haya Kalbouneh, founder of Masa wa Mansour 

Every morning, Olivia Bou Antoun took the elevator to the 39th floor.

“And the higher it went, the more I felt my face change looking at the mirror,” she says. “I could feel myself tightening, disconnecting, stepping into a role that didn’t belong to me.”

One day, she stepped out of the elevator, literally and metaphorically, choosing alignment over certainty.

In 2022, that decision led to the launch of Because You Care Dubai, an eco-conscious household care brand offering a non-toxic alternative to conventional laundry detergents. Its formula is made with only three biodegradable ingredients.

The idea started at home. As a mother of two, she searched for genuinely safe products. “Many brands claimed to be ‘green’ or ‘natural,’ but when I looked closer, the formulas didn’t match the promises.” 

So she built what she could not find.

The name reflects the intention behind each purchase. Choosing BYC, she says, means “choosing to care, for your family, your health, and the world you’re passing on.”

As she stepped into entrepreneurship, the hurdle was self-judgment. Olivia had internalized a traditional definition of a “real job”, stepping away made her feel “almost illegitimate, even ashamed at times”. 

When she fully owned her path, something shifted. “Today, I feel grounded, aligned, and at peace with my work. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s truly mine.”

Validation came as families began using the products daily. “Not ‘this is successful’, but ‘this is useful’,” she says. “I chose to walk away from a socially recognized status to build something that has real impact, improving the everyday lives of hundreds of families.” 

Her role has since expanded into education. She hosts workshops on endocrine disruptors and works with companies on the link between household products, health, and sustainability. “My voice has shifted from founder to guide,” she says. “People know that BYC is not run by a faceless company. I’m behind it. I’m a mother.”

Support from her husband and mentors were the scaffolding on the journey. “Entrepreneurship is not a solo performance, it’s a continuous dialogue,” she says.

Originally from Paris, she moved to Dubai for work. The city became home, where she built both her family and her business.

“I never expected that it was possible to truly love what you do,” she says.

“Leadership success is built from the inside out. And yet, leaders rarely receive the kind of support that transforms them,” says Dagmara Asbreuk, founder of Extraordinary Leadership™, and a transformational executive leadership partner.

With 15 years across senior roles inside Fortune 500 companies, she built a corporate identity. From the outside, it looked like success, but inside it felt like a struggle.

“The pain of staying stuck became greater than the risk of the unknown,” she says.

That realization came through quantum and energetic leadership. “That’s the space I now love guiding leaders into,” she says, working at the intersection of leadership, identity expansion, and the energetics of organizations and business.

Dagmara never expected to build her own business, shaped in part by watching her father struggle as an entrepreneur. Nor did she expect to move to Dubai or launch the Extraordinary Leadership podcast, which allows her to meet global change makers and amplify her mission.

Her story is a testament to the idea that when identity evolves, leadership, life, and organizations expand with it. “I’m not the same version of me I was 2, 4, 10, or 15 years ago, and I see that as the essence of embodied leadership: continuous evolution.”

There are rooms. And then there are rooms.

Like last week’s Fusion Dealroom.

There I was, sharing perspectives from a reputational and PR standpoint in a space with startups ranging from MVP-ready, to those entering MENA from other markets, to companies already generating seven-digit revenue.

The conversations did not just ebb and flow. They swelled into a wave of real discourse.

The question on the table:
Would capital owners be influenced by having their exit designed from the start?

The session, led by Dr Usama, an industry stalwart and founder I've had the pleasure of featuring back in 2024 for my series #BeyondCubicles, explored capital raising in a room filled with startups actively shaping the market.

In his post, he called it “the kind of clarity you only get when smart people disagree in good faith”.

And disagree we did.
Two camps emerged.
One: It’s about trust first.
The other: It’s about how strong your data room is.

The conversation made me reflect on something I've seen for years.

When you are building anything, including your reputation as a business or a personal brand, you can work with the best positioning experts in the world.
But if there are no proof points to support the narrative, the story eventually collapses.

Earlier in my career, CEO profiling was part of my portfolio. Today, I work with leaders and senior professionals on how they are seen through strategy, positioning, and publishing. Increasingly, the work centers on aligning the narrative with the operational reality so the story and the system reinforce each other.

In practice, positioning must be built on:
Operational depth and breadth.
Data points that move the story forward.
Claims that can be substantiated.

This applies in capital conversations.
And applies to reputation.

And in the right rooms, evidence does the convincing.

Would you be more likely to invest if a founder showed you a clear exit plan at pre-seed?

That was the opening question at this week’s 𝗙𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 and it lit the room up fast.

Almost immediately two camps formed:

• "𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗻" because the rest will change anyway.
• "𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵" a serious exit thesis early is a signal for disciplined thinking and respect for capital.

What surprised me wasn’t the disagreement though,
it was how quickly the conversation drifted to "the x‑factor" again!

The same theme from the last Fusion Dealroom...
and I don't know what to do with it!

It's starting to sound like a shortcut,
Similar to ecosystem builders' "𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝘀" as a KPI for entrepreneurship,

You know… the mythical creature.

Personally, and especially at pre-seed
an exit plan is a confidence builder for any capital allocator

which is meaningful and rational.

It forces clean questions:
• Who could realistically buy this and why?
• What would need to be true for that outcome?
• What milestones and gates change the risk profile?
• What’s the quickest way to prove the thesis 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴?

Two hours of mental sparring
sharp arguments

heated emotions
sincere passion

The kind of clarity you only get when smart people disagree in good faith.

And yet, it taught me about long-term reputation building.

It offers a key lesson we so often miss.

In my advisory work with professionals across positions, I often see people benchmarking someone else’s growth against their own.

In the book, Morgan Housel talks about the importance of understanding your own time horizon, and not being persuaded by the actions and behaviors of people who are playing a different game than you are.

Take personal branding.
You can see the engagement, the speaking gigs, and the awards.
But you don’t see their goals, worries, or aspirations. 

When you start building based on your own expectations, you attach more meaning to your own identity rather than someone else’s.
If you don’t, you will be easily swayed and thrown off course.

This is where many people lose their footing.

After three career pivots across journalism, government communication, and brand advisory, my own goals kept shifting until I aligned them with my values and purpose.

That alignment meant me playing my own game, not someone else’s.

1️⃣ Get the goalpost to stop moving.
It is dangerous when the taste for more power or prestige increases ambition faster than satisfaction. 
That's why it is important to chase goals that are yours, not those of your peers.
 
2️⃣ Social comparison is the problem.
The ceiling of social comparison is so high that virtually no one will ever hit it.
Accept that your journey and your efforts are enough, even if they look smaller than those around you.
 
3️⃣ There are many things never worth risking, no matter the potential gain. 
Look at what is invaluable. 
Reputation.
Freedom and independence.
Family and friends.
Being loved by those you love.
Happiness.
Your best chance of protecting these things is knowing when it is time to stop taking risks that might harm them.

In personal branding, this means defining your own wins and committing to a path that keeps you aligned with your values and the invaluable parts of life.

These are the unexpected lessons I took from #ThePsychologyOfMoney.

What did Twelve and a Half by Gary Vaynerchuk teach me about personal branding?

This is not a branding book.
It is a book about leadership and emotional strength. 
But it offers a powerful lesson on how reputation is built.

In my advisory work, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern. The ask is almost always the same: help with visibility rather than positioning rooted in purpose and values. And when visibility is the only ask, reputational drift begins.

Twelve and a Half focuses on the emotional qualities #garyvee believes shaped his leadership, including self-awareness, gratitude, accountability, empathy, patience, humility, and conviction.

These cannot be tracked or measured on a spreadsheet. 
There’s no column for humility or gratitude.
They are felt by the people who work with you, follow you, and trust you whether you are in the room or not. 

In the context of personal branding, the one quality that stands above the rest is self awareness.

You cannot build an authentic personal brand if you do not understand what you stand for, how you are perceived, and where your strengths and blind spots lie.

This is the gap I help leaders and senior professionals uncover. The gap between who they believe they are and how they are experienced by others. 

Self-awareness allows your online presence to reflect your real-world reputation, rather than compete with it.

Without it, even the most consistent content can start to feel hollow. I know mine did when I first started posting online. It read well, but it didn’t sound like me. I was often reposting content from people I admire and commenting on industry trends, without connecting any of it to my own values or purpose. 

When you begin with self-awareness, your brand stops being performative.
That is the unexpected lesson I took from this book.
