My head hurts a little...

Why do entrepreneurs consistently overlook the power of leveraging their time. 

A client is working on a new go-to-market motion for a new offering.

The service is super simple and has a very low cost to them to deliver. Their strategy was to sell it at a no brainer price and create profit through volume.

The problem is that in the B2B world, volume is reserved for those with A LOT of capital and/or time. For the rest of us bootstrapping our ideas, capital and time are scarce resources.

Digging in we revealed that even though the cost of delivery was extremely low, the value it produces is extremely high, especially compared to the alternatives.

We also discovered that it takes just as much time and effort to sign up a single employee account as it does to sign up a company with say a 20 employees.

I think you can see where I am going. And it seems simple once we take ourselves out of the equation and look from the outside in. But even knowing this, we all still get caught looking at opportunities in a linear way.

After a short brainstorming session, we settled on a price that was 5X what they originally planned to bill. It became a no brainer once we showed the value of the service compared to the alternative options, rather than trying to compete directly against their competitors on price.

The cherry on top is that they created a minimum package that includes five employees for an account. So if a company only has four employees, they still pay the minimum price and can grow into the package as they grow.

This protects my client's resources and gives them guardrails to whom they spend time talking about their service with; helping them leverage their time more effectively.

Setting a minimum price you are willing to engage a client with is very important. Done right it leverages your time and profitability by forcing you to eradicate temptation of servicing the low hanging fruit that is actually costing you money to pick.

I can't keep this secret any longer!

I recently interviewed Ely Delaney for the Buzzworthy Marketing Show and he unveiled something that can't wait to be shared. 

If you don't know, Ely is an email marketing expert who helps professional service providers build email nurture systems that reactivate relationships, convert dormant prospects, and generate referrals without becoming an annoying pest.

In my interview with Ely, we shared a piece of advice that I put into motion and saw immediately results.

We were talking about abandoned email lists. 

If you haven't emailed your list within the last six months, you have one of these. Mine been dead for over two years.

Ely says that the quickest way to reengage your audience is to send one simple email with the subject line:

"I am such a slacker"

In the body of the email:

"I am sorry that I have done a poor job of staying in touch with you the way I should.
I know I dropped the ball, I know I haven’t done it right and I promise that I am going to do better.
This starts with you. I would love to hear what is new and exciting in your world."

After the interview, my team sent that exact email out to my 2000+ dead email list. A list that hadn't heard from me through email for at least two years.

RESULTS: 

46% open rate (national average = 21%)

23% reply rate - Yes I had over 200 people email back from that one email.

MORE RESULTS:

- 2 new projects with old clients
- 2 new strategic partners that have already referred new business
- 3 referrals from those who don't need my current services, but had others that do.

I finally put a small set of bookshelves in my office.

No this isn't all of my books, but they do represent something interesting.

This collection is about 90% of the physical copies of business books I have read over the last 10 years. Double this count for my digital copies.

The question isn't how many books have I read, but from the ~200 business books in my library, what have I learned?

The answer is that I have probably forgotten more of what I read than learned much. Now a days, I am happy to get one to three golden nuggets out of a single book.

For the most part, I look at books as a great way to become aware of new mindsets and frameworks that shorten the learning curve of running a business.

Most of the time I try to implement what I learn from books and then continue to learn from the trial and error that comes from experimentation. 

Sometimes, I skip the experimentation route and reach out to the author's team to have them do the implementation for me. This seems to be more often recently for some reason.

My question to you: When you read a business book, what are the chances you will reach out the author for help compared to the trial and error route?
