After all, we are people, working with people, serving people. We are not machines or objects or even resources. We are human. And we humans are at our best when we are psychologically safe. This sense of interpersonal safety is a basic state of love, one of two primary human conditions. 

The other is fear, which creates rejection, hesitation, doubt, and uncertainty that can cause worry, tension, withdrawal, frustration, anger, and even illness. When we’re on edge we aren’t able to perform as well. But when we feel cared for and respected, we settle in. We feel at ease to be ourselves. And then we humans do incredible things. 

We serve, invent, and collaborate. We speak up, solve problems, and improve. We all want to know we belong, that what our efforts matter, that we can give and be and do our best.

CLW conducts social science research on the importance of making workplaces more loving and less fearful and distributes research insights to positively influence and benefit society, especially public benefit organizations and organizations that champion equity. 

The Center delivers curated and original content through multiple channels and media to influence societal norms, thinking, and practices. 

And CLW hosts educational and inspirational events to promote these objectives.

To make government more human, Renée led a statewide effort to create more human-centered and effective workplaces for public servants in the State of Washington. She defined and led a strategy for statewide outreach and impact, using her primary research and organization development and human-centered design knowledge to impact state government workplaces. She led a growing community in state government and beyond that gathered for A Human Workplace Gatherings. These monthly events inspired workplaces to be more humane and effective. When employees are psychologically safe, that is, when they are cared about, included, trusted, respected, when they know they matter and belong, then they are loyal, committed, take risks, and deliver the value the public needs and expects...and public service becomes more meaningful and gratifying.

In her work as the Director of Organization Development at Washington State's Department of Enterprise Services (DES) Renee led a caring and courageous team of consultants who provided Lean Transformation Services and Change Management Services to DES and G2G Lean Consulting to state agencies and local governments anywhere. They worked with governments that sought to adapt Lean to operations to deliver better value to customers and make public service a deeply gratifying experience. She served on the DES Corporate Council which was dedicated to modelling and promoting agency culture and operational excellence for all of DES and its customers. 

She believes that government can work, and the best hope for governments to deliver on their promises is when Lean is embraced as a human-centered philosophy of work, not just a set of tools used by an improvement expert. 

This kind of government is based on a principled way of working that highly regards both customers and team members as well as the planet that they live and work on. When leaders decrease fear, team members feel safe and know they belong. They sense their contributions matter, and they deliver the exceptional value customers expect. These basics of acceptance, trust, belonging and respect are fundamentally love. And love is the essential underpinnings of any management system.

In 2017 at DES, Renee founded A Human Workplace to more deeply explore and advocate for these concepts. A Human Workplace includes research, writing at MakeWorkMoreHuman.com, speaking and teaching, and a growing community of people around the world who want to see a more human workplace.

Director of Organization Development: Lean Transformation, Change Management and G2G Lean Consulting

As director of Lean Transformation Services and a member of the agency's senior management team, Renee is responsible for delivering consulting services to Washington State government agencies and other government entities. She guides governments to strategically adopt a Lean business philosophy and create a new way of working in government. She sets direction for agency culture building efforts to cultivate a Lean management system and the fundamental way every employee works. This effort encompasses strategy, structure, processes, people capability, mindset and management systems in a holistic approach. 

Her team of consultants is equipping "every leader to be a coach and every employee to be a problem-solver" in the systems they serve. They facilitate Lean improvement projects, train leaders and teams in Lean daily practice including huddles and visual management techniques, measurement, and scientific problem solving. 

Renee designed and her team executed the agency wide program- and agency-strategy mapping effort. They guided 62 teams to identify core processes, outcomes and measures of their fundamental work. This grass roots approach rolled up to the agency level map so that employees know how their work connects to agency goals and outcomes. 

They have coached more than 100 teams and leaders to adopt daily huddles. This is the central point of communication for monitoring measures that matter to teams and making data driven business decisions. 

This human-centered business philosophy creates a collaborative culture where curiosity feeds continuous improvement. The only way that happens is when fear is minimized and care and respect are maximized. When team members know they matter, that they belong, amazing things happen for customers, Washingtonians.

For most of us, fear-based leadership was coded in us from birth to 18, long before we ever managed a team, at home and in school, sports, media, and early work experiences.
