Selling your expertise shouldn’t feel this hard.

If you’re good at what you do…
why does selling feel uncomfortable?

Here’s a truth most consultants struggle to admit:

It’s not a sales problem.
It’s an identity problem.

When you’re a coach or consultant,
you’re not selling a product.

You’re selling you.

And that’s why rejection feels personal.

Traditional sales advice doesn’t help.
It’s built for professional salespeople.
Not for people whose expertise is the offer.

You’re told to:

– Perfect your pitch
– Memorize objections
– Ask “smart” closing questions
– Sound more confident than you feel

 Feels off, doesn’t it?

Deep down, 
you don’t want to become “that person.”

Me neither.

Here’s what changed things for me.

Selling as an expert…

→ Isn’t about convincing
→ Isn’t about performing
→ Isn’t about pressure
→ Isn’t about becoming slick

It’s about creating clarity that builds trust —
so the right people want to say yes
before you ever “sell.”

That shift changed everything.

Not overnight.

But permanently.

Here are the 3 things that made it easier:

1️⃣ Stop pitching. Start understanding.

I used to go into calls with a script.
… preparation meant polishing my explanation.

Right?

What it actually did?

It kept me from listening.

The moment I stopped trying to “close”
and started trying to understand,
conversations relaxed.

And ironically…
opportunities opened on their own.

Pressure kills trust.
Curiosity builds it.

2️⃣ Skip explanations. Ask better questions.

We love explaining what we do.

It feels…
safe, competent, like value.

But explaining too early…
is often anxiety in disguise.

The better move?

Ask natural questions that uncover:

– What they’ve already tried
– What’s actually frustrating them
– What happens if nothing changes

When someone feels deeply understood,
selling becomes alignment — not persuasion.

3️⃣ Guide first. Solve later.

This was the hardest one for me.

As experts, we want to solve immediately.

We hear the problem,
and we jump into solutions.

But that often shrinks our value.

Instead of giving answers,
paint the bigger picture.

Share a story of someone similar.

Help them see the future version of themselves.

When someone sees the outcome clearly,
they move toward it themselves.

Early on, I thought sales was about verbal skill.

About being sharp.

About “wooing” people with expertise.

The shift happened when I slowed down.

Listened more.

Spoke less.

Focused on clarity instead of technique.

My calls got easier.

The anxiety reduced.

And clients started coming more naturally.

If selling still feels heavy…

You’re probably carrying a burden that isn’t yours.

When you stop trying to “sell”
and start creating clarity,
the right people don’t need convincing.

They just decide.

That’s when getting clients stops feeling personal.

And starts becoming inevitable.
