I love marketing and advertising because it's the chance to understand people and deliver goods or services that solve one of their deeply held wants or needs.

When I was 8 years old I had a dream of becoming an entrepreneur, an NBA player, an Olympian. That very summer I walked down my 1/4 mile driveway and stood on our bridge for hours with a bin full of my toys to host my own garage sale. This was way out in the country well few visitors would come, some kind neighbors or passers-by stopped and bought some of my stuff. I think that day I made $20, back in 1997. 

I learned the power of communicating with strangers and having no fear. Since that day, I have loved talking to people. I want to know why you tick, what matters to you, why you made the choice of clothes, food, trips, hotels and exercise. Market segmentation is about grouping people together as Seth Godin says, "People like us, do things like this."

This weekend, my 8-year-old son turned our family hikes into a mini-business empire! 

Over the past couple months, he's been collecting cool crystals on trails, and on Saturday, he knocked on doors in the neighborhood—selling them and earned a whopping $20 in only 1.5 hours.

The best part is no body planted this idea in his head, he has seen his father run side-hustles from our home for years.

Little did I know, his random marketing questions to me ("Dad, how do I make people want my stuff?") were part of a master plan. After his big earn, he proudly set up his first budgeting system: SAVE, SPEND, and GIVE jars—dividing his cash like a pro.

The challenge? Explaining concepts like value and planning to a 3rd grader. Insight: Kids absorb lessons through action—his hustle taught resilience, creativity, and smart money habits way better than any lecture.

Outcome: A beaming kid with jars ready for adventure (and maybe his next venture?). As a marketing leader, moments like this remind me why human-centered strategies win—at home and work.

Someone close to me just was laid off right before Thanksgiving, which was a reminder to me that we don’t know what others are going through unless we ask and listen!

Ever feel like closed doors are just redirects to better paths? 🙏

Yesterday, a past client and friend, Bruce, shared this inspiring story that reminded me how miracles still unfold in our careers. He'd been praying for a job opportunity—and while he wasn't selected for it, something unexpected happened.

Just days later, a former manager from another company texted him out of the blue, inviting him to join his new team. Long story short: After quick discussions, their COO greenlit the move, matching Bruce's desired salary range, with a potential Dec 1 start. God willing, an offer's coming Friday or Monday.

The challenge: Rejection stings, especially when you're putting faith and effort into a goal. But as Bruce put it, "When God shuts a door, he opens a window." Insight: Trust the timing—networks, prayers, and perseverance often align in ways we can't predict, turning setbacks into setups.

This outcome? A fresh start that's even better aligned. As a coach, I've seen this play out time and again: Stay open, nurture relationships, and bet on divine redirects.
