Stop panicking. Start thinking.

Lots of folks reading the Shumer piece are either panicking the freak out or sticking their heads in the sand, parroting the age old lines of "AI can never replace [given human attribute]". (yes it can)

Folks, dust off your marketing strategy from B school, because we've been here before.

We forgot product evolution frameworks in our AI panic:

Commodity > Branded Product/Goods > Service > Experience > Transformation

Knowledge work outputs are almost free with AI. Suno can create music. Claude can write books. Codex et. al. can code. Nano Banana can paint, draw, photograph, etc. and as long as someone competent is directing the tools or the tools are harnessed properly to do it themselves, which they can do now, these knowledge products are commodities.

"F you, Chris, I'm not a commodity and that's insulting!" You're not a commodity, but your basic output is IF you don't work your way up the value chain. Remember Porter's 5 Forces? If the customer doesn't have a strong preference and just wants an escapist book, AND they don't understand your value prop, then an AI-generated trashy romance novel is just as good as a human one.

Which means you have to evolve up the value chain. A book is a book UNLESS you've built such a strong brand that people want YOU by name, and then your book becomes a movie, a TV series, and ultimately something like a theme park attraction at the highest level of evolution.

Musicians understand this well. Music is a commodity by itself UNTIL someone dials into your brand. And the best musicians convert a branded product into a service - like live concerts. Those concerts become epics unto themselves, true experiences (ask any Swiftie), and the best experiences are personally transformative that people pay hilarious amounts of money for.

Sit down with your AI thought partner of choice and feed them this post. Heck, here's a prompt you can copy and paste into your favorite prompt optimizer:

> You're a product marketing genius. Interview me about who I am and the commodity knowledge work I do. Help me understand what of my work is a commodity (easy substitute) that's vulnerable to generative AI. Help me build a strategy and workplan to work up the value chain: Commodity > Branded Product/Goods > Service > Experience > Transformation. How do I convert what I do into branded product/services, away from commodities? How do I convert those into services and eventually irreplaceable experiences, even transformative ones? Apply lateral and transformative thinking practices, dissecting my background into hard and soft skills and using the components to formulate the strategy and workplan. Ask me tough questions.

Let's take a break from all AI all the time to celebreate Lunar New Year!

2026 is the year of the Yang Fire Horse. Let's break down what this means in Asian lore, with the acknowledgement that each culture (China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mongolia, etc.) has their own unique interpretations and this is a generalization.

Each year has an energy element - yin and yang. Yin energy is inward, introspective. Yang energy is outward, broadcasting.

Each year has one of five elements - water, fire, wood, earth, and metal. Elements both create and destroy each other - water > wood > fire > earth > metal in the creation cycle and water > fire > metal > wood > earth in the destruction cycle. A fire year is a year of brightness and expansion, but also consuming whatever foundations you've created.

Each year has an animal, a persona. This year is the horse, industrious, essential, powerful, fast but also linear. Anyone who's ever ridden a horse knows that it's much easier to keep the horse going in a straight line than to rapidly change directions.

Here's what the year of the Yang Fire Horse roughly means: expect a year at breakneck pace. If you're on the correct side of the horse, it's going to be quite a year, and there's no stopping the ride. There's not much room for changing directions, and if you do, it's going to be a jarring shift, like trying to do a u-turn at 180 miles per hour. If you're on the wrong side of the horse, you're getting trampled and burned.

The risk of burnout is very high; traveling at breakneck speeds all year long means no stopping to catch your breath, lest you be trampled. That means taking care of yourself is super important. And if you're headed in the wrong direction, you'll get there very, very quickly. 

It takes a strong hand on the reins to change directions at all, so this is not a time for weak leadership, nor is it a time to take a backseat. Don't let other people drive your dreams this year, because the fire horse will take them where they want to go, and you may not like where you end up.

Let's talk about 3 kinds of thinking in AI today: unary, binary, and trinary.

Unary: "AI, do this thing for me."

Binary: "AI, which will my customer like better, A or B?"

Trinary: "AI, give me 3 different ideas for this thing."

Most folks when using AI are doing unary thinking. Do this thing. Make that thing. Give me THE answer. The problem with this is that this tends to lead to sloppy outcomes because ALL AI are probability engines. Asking for one thing returns the highest probability thing, and when you're doing any kind of ideation, especially for creative purposes, high probability = low originality.

If you're doing ideation? You should specifically ask for 3-7 increasingly divergent concepts with their probabilities.

Sometimes, you'll want to intentionally push it into hallucinatory behaviors ON PURPOSE to stretch into what's really improbable. When it comes to ideation, divergent thinking, and creativity, hallucinations are a feature, not a bug in this specific context.

At a minimum though, get away from unary and binary thinking with AI, because it's too easy to accept the answer given. It doesn't make YOU think. Katie Robbert taught me with scenario planning that three is the BARE minimum you should always plan for - worst case, best case, and status quo.

In the words of Captain Freeman from Lower Decks: give me options!

Because sometimes ejecting the warp core is in fact the right answer, especially when you're being chased by a homicidal AI with daddy issues.

Ask for 3 or more.
