Shekou Industrial Zone slogan - time is money - efficiency is life

Going to China to visit your supplier(s) without any flight uncertainties!!

Now is the time for smart people to visit their supplier(s) in China! There are so many Chinese airlines offering direct flights between several European cities and mostly Beijing! No lengthy or sometimes extremely short stopovers in European or Middle East airports! 

For example I typically fly from Dublin to Beijing with Hainan Airlines, and then continue 2,000km south to Shenzhen!

Chinese airlines are permitted to fly across Russian airspace, which reduces flight times and cost! 

In Shenzhen (as in any other city) you can enjoy breakfast in small yet tasty places, such as this neighbourhood dumpling "shop". Most people buy pork, beef or vegetable buns for 1rmb (= 0.12€) each as takeaway food on their way to work or back to their homes. However there is room for a handful of customers in a small area in the kitchen - that is if you know that this is available! And should you still be hungry and order one or few more buns, that's of no problem either. You pay with your phone on your way out.

Chinese New Year - From Travel Chaos (??) to Family Harmony

When looking at the photographs of railway stations in the run up to #ChineseNewYear one would think of utter chaos. However, compared with 10, 20 years ago the Spring Festival Travel Rush #春运 is quite orderly these days. This is due to the 50,000km (!) of #HighSpeedTrain network in China. You can only enter a train station with a valid ticket (bought online) by scanning your ID Card (or in the case of non-Chinese nationals, passport). And the same goes for entering the platform of the booked train.

Why do more than 600 million (!!!) Chinese want to be in their home places for New Year? First of all don't forget that most of them are 1st or 2nd generation migrants from different parts of China, living and working often more than 1,550km away from their home place.

For Chinese people New Year's Eve #除夕 is the most important date in their calendar. The Family Reunion Meal #团圆饭, be it lunch or dinner, with the entire direct family circle is so important. Lavish meals are served, with every dish having a distinct meaning - often depending on the province. Fish is always prepared, because the Chinese word for fish is homonymous with the word for "abundance" - key for the New Year.

A walk through a pedestrian zone in Tianjin (China) 


Tianjin 天津 with a population of 15 mio is a major international port city in China, approx. 50 km inlands from the Bohai Sea. It is located 120 km southeast of central Beijing, and can be reached by high speed train in half an hour.

Many of the large commercial and administrative buildings in the city centre were built by foreign concessionaires, typical of European and Japanese colonial architecture of the 1920s and 1930s.

This video was sent to me by a friend who visited the city at the weekend. I am posting it because two of my friends in Europe Bruce Connolly and Kathryn Read like Tianjin, and you can see a fair bit of this city in their posts.

Both photographs show today's China!!!

You probably only see the glitzy new China, which influencers continuously share on social media. However there is still live going on in rural China which hasn't changed that much over the years.

This morning I read a friend's harrowing childhood memories on WeChat:
很多人在怀念过去，怀念小时候，但是很多不愿意回到小时候，那时候太艰苦了。5岁开始需要烧火做饭。放学需要去干农活。高温40℃，还要去抗旱，捉虫，有时候我想，那么多虫子🐛，靠人能捉几个，真的能提高产量吗？是不是自我安慰啊。每次父母亲从棉花地里打农药出来，身上衣服都是湿的，一把能揪出水来。半年萝卜，半年青菜，一年就是过年能吃好一点，过完初三，家里都没有荤腥了。为啥没有年味，是因为现在生活富裕了。我们要敢于面对现在老人的农村生活。我小学同学在农村，现在腰也弯了，头发基本都白了，牙齿也掉了很多，至少比我老20多岁。真实的农村，比城里孩子能想出来的，艰苦多了。

"Many people reminisce about the past, about their childhood, but many are unwilling to return to their childhood because it was so hard. From the age of five, we had to cook and tend the fire. After school, we had to do farm work. In temperatures of 40℃, we still had to fight drought and catch insects. Sometimes I wonder, with so many insects, how many can a person catch? Does it really increase yield? Is it just wishful thinking? Every time my parents came out of the cotton fields spraying pesticides, their clothes were soaked through; you could wring water out of them. Half of the year we had radishes, half the year vegetables; the only time we ate well was during the Lunar New Year. After the third day of the New Year there was no meat left in the house. Why is there no festive atmosphere? Because life is better now. We must be willing to face the reality of rural life for the elderly today. My elementary school classmate lives in the countryside; now his back is bent, his hair is almost all white, and he has lost many teeth - and he looks at least 20 years older than me. The real countryside is much harder than city kids can imagine."

This friend is 46 years old and a successful businessman in Shenzhen. His words should make you realise that what you are buying from China today is built on hard work over the past 40 - 45 years. And do not underestimate what Chinese people are actually capable of achieving!

Fly from Dublin to Beijing in 10 hours!!!

No flight disruptions at travel hubs (e.g. in the Middle East)! Direct flights e.g. from Dublin to Beijing with Hainan Airlines. 

And there are also other direct flights from European cities to China.

Why is this so? China does not get involved in any international wars, and therefore Chinese airlines are permitted to use the shortest possible routes between Europe and China: flying over Russian airspace.

Global shortage of glass fiber cloth (for PCBs) continues

The global shortage of #GlassFiberCloth is continuing to drive significant constraints in #PCB laminate (#CCL) availability.

The 10% price increase letter dated 26/12/2025 from one of the world's biggest #FR4 manufacturers cites surge in copper prices and extremely tight supply situation of glass fiber cloth as the reason for it. And as we all know, those increases are not limited to Asia!

APEX EXPO 2026 will be a quite interesting trade show for the PCB industry!

The entire #PCB #supplychain is currently in upheaval, and that's already before the war in the Middle East began.

The huge demand for AI servers is changing the #PCBlaminate raw material industry: glass fabrics (#Tglass instead of #Eglass, where glass filament makers and weavers can't meet the new requirement volumes), #CopperFoil (#HVLP5), etc. Huge price increases, laminate allocation, and also EOL of some materials have started to kick in.
