The title is rising fast.

But a title does not create a Chief Partner Officer. Mandate does.

Two things determine whether the role is real or symbolic:

Budget.

You need direct ownership of capital.
Not borrowed dollars.
Not discretionary scraps.
Not marketing leftovers.

If you do not control budget, you do not control outcomes.

Authority.

Authority means the power to prioritize.
The power to decline.
The power to protect focus.

If you cannot say no, you are not leading. You are reacting.

Without budget and authority, the CPO is a coordinator with executive branding.

With them, the CPO becomes a growth operator.

The role rests on four pillars.

Build.
Market.
Sell.
Serve.

If partnerships do not drive all four, they are not embedded in the business model.

Titles are expanding.
Mandate must follow.

Something interesting is happening in deals right now.

In the past week I spoke with four services companies.

Each told me the same thing.

Customers are asking for the partner manager to join deal calls.

Why?

Because the deal no longer involves just one vendor.

There are multiple companies delivering the outcome:
• The platform
• The services partner
• The software (think app) partner
• Sometimes even the data or AI provider

Customers want someone coordinating the ecosystem.

Not just selling the product.

That role is increasingly falling to the partnerships team.

If this trend continues, it changes how we think about partnerships.

Partner managers are no longer behind the scenes.

They are becoming the orchestrators of multi-party deals. (I know James Hodgkinson will love this one). 

I am curious if others are seeing this too.

Are customers asking for partnerships teams to be present in complex deals? Pre-Close? Post-Sale?

I build the revenue and financing systems for B2B companies entering new markets. My focus is turning complex financial products, pricing models, and capital structures into repeatable revenue, scalable distribution, and durable ecosystem value.

At Aurora Solar, I led global partnerships and later served as GM for the financing ecosystem. The AI displacement narrative is missing the real story. The underuse of AI (in red) is far more interesting to me.

New research from Anthropic shows that while AI could theoretically cover 60-94% of tasks in sectors like legal and finance, observed usage is just a fraction of that.

This isn't a technology gap. It's a commercialization gap.

We saw the same thing with the cloud. The tooling, pricing, and deployment architecture took a decade to catch up. AI is on the same curve, just steeper.

The companies that close this gap first will build a significant competitive advantage through workflow depth that is hard to replicate.

Models commoditize. Deployment does not.

The problem is not the price. It is that the cost was never fully modeled. Tokens your product consumes that the user never sees. Infrastructure nobody accounted for. Third-party API calls that compound quietly in the background.

-Path 1: Provider API. Fast, flexible, someone else's rate hike.
-Path 2: Open source on your own infra. Rent the compute, own the weights.
-Path 3: Fine-tuned foundation model. More control, more cost.
-Path 4: Proprietary from scratch. $5-10M in compute just to start.

Most companies are on Path 1. Most have not modeled what Path 1 actually costs them per transaction, fully loaded.

That is where the margin goes.
