Behind the gates of America’s busiest port 🚢 and what it says about the future of logistics.

Earlier this month, I had the chance to go behind the scenes at the Port of Los Angeles as part of PrologisNext, the invite-only innovation network connecting leaders from DHL, PepsiCo, Bridgestone, Maersk, NFI and manyothers who are shaping what’s next in supply chain and logistics .

The visit was a powerful reminder of how ports aren’t just gateways for goods - they’re the engines of economic resilience, infrastructure innovation, and sustainability.

Here are a few things that stuck with me:

1️⃣ Scale that touches every corner of the country
The Port’s reach extends to all 435 U.S. congressional districts and supports 1 in 8 jobs in Southern California. More than a million jobs statewide are tied to this logistics ecosystem - a living example of how infrastructure fuels opportunity.

2️⃣ Speed over storage
The team’s mantra was clear: “Treat the port as a transit hub, not a warehouse.” Every process, from marine terminals to on-dock rail is designed around velocity, flow, and precision.

3️⃣ Infrastructure built for tomorrow
Long-term investments are underway to modernize terminals, expand rail capacity, and even raise the Vincent Thomas Bridge to accommodate the next generation of ultra-large vessels.

4️⃣ Sustainability as strategy
The Port is on track to achieve:
• 100 % zero-emission cargo-handling equipment by 2030
• 100 % zero-emission drayage trucks by 2035
It’s also serving as a real-world testbed for robotics, electrification, and alternative-fuel pilots - proving innovation can scale at the system level.

And one detail I can’t stop thinking about:
Much of the Port of LA was literally built stone by stone, through breakwaters and fill - a reminder that the most transformative growth is often created, not found.

It’s easy to think digital transformation fails because the tech wasn’t right.
