First 7 days don't only determine retention, they forecast lifetime value.

The best products don't "teach" features. They create habits.

Here is what distinguishes your high-LTV onboarding from the rest.

1. Show value quickly.
Don't explain — show. 
Get your users to the "aha" moment in minutes, not days. 

2. Guide behavior, not swipes.

Good interfaces are built for humans with roles, moods, habits.

And most “design rules” don’t cover that part.

Here are the non-obvious principles we now swear by:

1. Design for roles.

An operator, manager, and analyst can see “the same tool” but they are living three different narratives.

2. Tell a story.

Good UI behaves like a scene in a movie: each frame indicates, “Here’s what happens next.”

3. Simplicity isn’t minimalism.

It’s knowing what to conceal. A complex system should feel simple, even if it is not.

4. One action per screen.

Every screen should answer one question. The moment users have to pause, you’ve lost the moment.

5. Adapt, don’t copy.

There is no “best practice” for everybody.
A healthtech dashboard and a crypto wallet shouldn’t look/feel the same, and that’s a feature not a flaw.

6. Accessibility is a growth strategy.

It’s how you earn trust and give access to the people your competitors are forgetting.

The best interfaces don’t impress. They disappear.
You’re not noticing them because they are busy making you feel capable.

I have looked through hundreds of product interfaces.

And most trust issues come from invisible details that are saying, "We did not care enough."

1. Text locked in images.
It seems nice... until you realize:
Google can't read it.
Screen readers aren't being able to get through it.
It is going to break on mobile.

✅ Fix: Always use proper, responsive HTML text overlaid on visuals. That communicates quality and care.

2. Stock photos with zero context.
If your visuals could go on any website, they shouldn't be on yours. 
People simply don't connect with "perfect smiles" and "handshakes in glass offices."
User's even notice when an image doesn't match what they are viewing.

✅ Fix: Use visuals with your product, actual people or even simple, authentic brand illustrations. Authenticity scales better than aesthetics.

3. Inconsistent spacing.
Uneven padding. A headline that is floating. Tight corners next to wide gaps. Users may never name the issue, but they feel it.
That feeling? Uncertainty. And uncertainty is lethal when it comes to conversion.

✅ Fix: Use a modular grid and consistent spacing system. Regular rhythm = subconscious trust.

And that’s usually why people forget it.

After helping dozens of teams simplify their pitch and homepage messaging, here are 3 frameworks that consistently work:

1️⃣ The “Movie Trailer” Line.
Hit emotion + problem + solution in one shot.

Structure:
“We help [audience] solve [problem] through [unique solution].”

Example:
 “We help remote teams brainstorm faster with an AI whiteboard that auto-organizes ideas.”

This gives people the whole story instantly.

2️⃣ The “Six-Second Test”. If you can answer these in one tight sentence, you’re done:
• Who it’s for.
• What it does.
• Why it’s different.
• What problem it solves.
• What outcome it creates.

Example:
 “For busy parents, our app plans healthy meals automatically — saving hours and reducing food waste.”

3️⃣ The “Anchor to the Familiar.”
When something is new, you need a shortcut.

Structure:
 “It’s like [familiar thing], but for [your context].”

Example:
 “It’s like Airbnb, but for campers.”
It reduces cognitive load and accelerates understanding.

If someone can’t repeat your product back to you after 10 seconds, you don’t have a messaging problem, you have a clarity problem.

Last week, I tried to book a demo of a new tool.

Those 20 seconds told me everything.

Product UX failed here.
I scrolled twice. 
Clicked the wrong button. 
Didn’t find clues.
And gave up.

Review your product like a first-time user.

And try to fix UX issues.

1. Watch the heatmaps.
When a user pauses, backtracks, or clicks twice, that’s a red flag.
Confusion shows up in body language before it shows in analytics.

2. Check forms first.
Long fields. Missing confirmations. Mobile layouts that break.
Forms kill more conversions than bad marketing ever will.

3. Scan for “dead weight.”
Buttons nobody clicks. Copy nobody reads. Features nobody touches.
If it doesn’t guide the user forward, it’s friction.

4. Run 10-minute heuristic checks.
Navigation, readability, error states, consistency.

You don’t need a 3-month research sprint to uncover UX flaws.

 How to find UX problems

“$5K for a full app” should set off alarm bells.

I’ve seen founders get burned by quotes that sound too good to be true.

And here’s the reality: they usually are.

A credible app budget runs anywhere from $50K–$250K+, depending on scope and complexity. 

At $5K, what you’re really buying is a prototype, a landing MVP, or a template, not a production-grade product.

The hidden costs show up later:

✦ No discovery → scope creep and endless change requests.
✦ No QA → your users become the testers.
✦ No maintenance plan → apps break as OS versions and APIs update.
✦ No IP clarity → some “cheap shops” keep the repo keys, locking you in.
✦ No security → exposing you to compliance fines or breaches (the average costs $4.9M globally).

So what does a serious proposal include?

1. Discovery: user flows, integrations, edge cases.
2. Delivery plan: milestones, QA, release strategy.
3. Security & compliance baked in.
4. Ongoing ops & maintenance plan.

🚩 If a vendor quotes $5K for the whole thing, don’t think “deal.”

Everyone loves the safe answer: “It depends.”

But that doesn’t help when you’re budgeting, forecasting, or explaining ROI to your board.

1. Avatar: the emotion you want your users to feel. (Do you want them caring, empowered, energized, etc.?) 

2. Map the emotion to each interaction. For every step: "What is this moment teaching?" 

3. Test the users' reactions, not just the usability. Record facial expressions or tone, or even keywords in a survey, after each interaction. 

4. Design feedback loop(s)- use motion, microcopy, timing, etc. to bake in positive emotions in the experience.

The trick is not to fight it.
Not to blame yourself.
Not to “be less” so someone else feels better.

📌 The trick is to turn it into fuel.

Here’s how you do that without becoming bitter or defensive:

1.	Translate the insult.
Most criticism is coded jealousy. Learn to hear what’s actually being said.

2.	Use it as calibration, not condemnation.
If someone gets triggered by your growth, you’re moving in the right direction!

3.	Detach from the source.
Happy people don’t attack others. If it’s coming from pain, don’t take it personally.

4.	Tighten your circle.
You don’t need fans. You need two or three people who tell the truth and want you to win.

5.	Stay busy building.
Momentum is the best response. Nothing silences doubt like undeniable progress.

None of this is about revenge.
It’s about staying rooted in who you are while others wrestle with who they’re not.

It is not your responsibility to fix an angry person. Move on. 

Keep shining.
Some people will squint.
Some will stare.
A few will step into the light themselves.

A bad manager can literally break you.

People around you shape your future more than you do.

The older I get, the more obvious this is:

"Surround yourself with people that push you to do better."

Most people read quotes like this and nod along.
Then they go straight back to the group chat that drags them down a level.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Your environment is not “neutral.”
It is either sharpening you or dulling you.

I’ve coached founders who genuinely believe they’re “working hard” while being surrounded by people who spend their days complaining, gossiping, or quietly resenting anyone who tries to grow.

💥 You don’t rise in that environment.
You shrink to fit it.

The highest-performing people I know do something very simple that most people refuse to do:
They curate.
Not in a snobby way.
In a survival way.

They choose people who are ambitious without being insufferable.
Supportive without being clingy.
Honest without being hostile.
Calm, focused, internally motivated.

If your circle drains you, distracts you or makes you feel smaller, it’s not a circle.
It’s a toilet bowl.

Instead:
A. Audit your environment.
B. Trim the noise.
C. Keep the ones who make you better.

1. Notice who leaves you clearer rather than confused.
Pay attention to the conversations where your mind feels sharper after, not foggier.

2. Keep a small circle of people who are genuinely improving their lives.
Not perfect. Just trying. That alone changes the quality of your decisions.

3. Reduce the noise, not the people.
You don’t have to cut ties. Just create more space for the right influences.

4. Bring better energy to your own interactions.
Encouraging others lifts your own standard more than you think.

5. Make growth feel normal.
Share ideas. Share progress. Make improvement a regular part of your week.

Most of the time, you don’t need a dramatic life reset.
You just need a cleaner environment and a few better inputs.

Here are 5 real mental models that secretly guide your behavior, and how to use them instead of getting used by them:

1. Murphy’s Law
🧠 “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”
Attributed to aerospace engineer Edward A. Murphy Jr. (1949)

→ Most people over-index on fear.
But the real danger is paralysis from overthinking.
Fear leads to inaction, and inaction then creates the outcome you were worried about. 
✅ Use it: Prepare, don’t panic. Focus on contingency, but not catastrophe.


2. Kidlin’s Law
🧠 “If you can write the problem clearly, you’re halfway to solving it.”
Origin: Circulated in systems thinking and project management circles; exact attribution unknown.

→ Ambiguity kills action. Writing a problem forces clarity.
Most “overwhelm” is just an unprocessed issue in disguise.
✅ Use it: Write it out. Label the problem. Break it down. Half way there. 


3. Gilbert’s Law
🧠 “The biggest problem at work is that no one takes ownership.”
Origin: Often cited in corporate culture; loosely attributed to aerospace exec Bill Gilbert.

→ Success doesn’t come from waiting for the right conditions.
It comes from owning the outcome, even when it’s messy.
✅ Use it: Stop outsourcing your future. Start acting like it’s on you, because it is.


4. Wilson’s Law
 🧠 “The more you focus on intelligence and knowledge, the more likely wealth will follow.”
 Origin: Less formally recognized; likely a modern synthesis of productivity and leverage principles (similar to Naval Ravikant's thinking).

→ Hustle culture is overrated. (I think it's total bullshit in fact).
Leverage, learning, and systems win long term.
✅ Use it: Work smarter. Automate, delegate, and learn relentlessly.


5. Falkland’s Law
🧠 “If it’s not necessary to make a decision, it’s necessary not to make one.”
Origin: From the Falklands War-era British leadership principle. Quoted by military strategist Sir William Slim.

→ Most decisions aren’t urgent. But decision fatigue is real.
Protect your mental bandwidth for what actually matters.
✅ Use it: Delay non-urgent decisions. Act only where impact is clear.


The kicker?
These laws aren’t optional. They’re already at work in your life right now.

I've restarted my life a bunch of times.
After each exit.

We treat setbacks like they're permanent.
We treat restarts like they're failures.

Meanwhile, every successful person I know has a graveyard of abandoned versions of themselves.

The startup founder who used to be a banker.
The CEO who failed three times before this worked.
The coach who burnt out as a consultant first.

They didn't fail.
They iterated.

📌 Your life isn't a one-shot deal.
It's a series of experiments where you get to keep the lessons.

𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧 when the path stops serving you.
Not because you're weak. 
Because you're aware.

𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗧 when you drift from your values.
Not because you're lost. 
Because you remember who you are.

𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦 when the noise gets too loud.
Not because you can't handle it. 
Because you know what actually matters.

Most people are TERRIFIED of starting over because they think it means they've wasted time.

But those "failed" versions of you?
They're not waste.
They're data.

Every restart teaches you:
- What you won't tolerate anymore
- What actually energizes you

The person who's willing to restart is damn dangerous.

This is it. Permission granted.

You don't need to explain the pivot.
You don't need to justify the reset.
You don't need anyone's approval to refocus.

Just don't give up on the project.
Because you're the only one you're guaranteed to work with for life.
