If your paid channels keep over-targeting returning customers, read this.

→ Works via sGTM.
→ Uses first-party data.
→ No additional tooling needed.

100% accurate new vs. returning customer tracking,
here’s how to set it up:

1. Start using Stape Store.

↳ Activate this cloud database in your Stape account.
↳ This becomes your first-party customer database.


2. Hash and store all past customer emails.

↳ Hash your entire customer database via an online SHA-256 tool.
↳ Store the hashed values in Stape Store.
↳ Add key: purchase_count = 1 (or higher).
↳ Make sure you have consent for storing this data.


3. Hash incoming emails in sGTM and write them to Stape Store.

↳ Use a SHA-256 hashing variable in sGTM.
↳ Use Stape Store Writer tag.
↳ Trigger this tag on every purchase event.
↳ Add key: purchase_count = {{purchase_count}}.

(Where {{purchase_count}} = historical number of purchases you store per customer. This is the actual logic that determines new vs. returning.)


4. Check if the hashed email exists in the database.

↳ Use Stape Store Lookup variable.
↳ Capture the new_customer value based on the hashed email.

If purchase_count = 0 / undefined → new customer.
If purchase_count = 1 (or higher) → returning customer.


5. Use this variable in your tags / triggers.

↳ Trigger new customer events in Google Ads / Meta
↳ Trigger returning customer events in Google Ads / Meta.
↳ Trigger new customer first click events in Google Ads / Meta.
↳ Add the new_customer variable to your “regular” Google Ads purchase conversion.

This gives your bidding algorithms the signal they never had.


6. First-click new customer tracking (advanced).

↳ Count sessions in sGTM.
↳ Capture click IDs when they appear.
↳ Store session count + click IDs in Stape Store.
↳ Check whether session 1 came from a paid source.

This tells you whether someone’s first visit (not just their purchase) should be attributed as a new customer from paid.
