I've seen this pattern play out repeatedly with Gen Z professionals I coach:

Those who send this type of follow-up consistently are called "organized," "proactive," and "leadership material."

The ones who don't? They fade into the background, even when they're doing good work.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬:

The career move that changes everything: Learning to ask better questions.
Most Gen Z professionals ask:

→ "What should I do?"
→ "Is this right?"
→ "Can you review this?"

These questions keep you junior forever.

Strategic professionals ask:

→ "What business problem are we solving and why does it matter?"
→ "What are three ways we could approach this, and which creates most value?"
→ "Here's my analysis—what am I missing?"
→ "What tradeoffs should we consider?"
→ "How does this decision impact our Q2 strategy?"

The difference?

Junior questions seek approval.

Senior questions demonstrate strategic thinking.

Why this matters:

Your questions reveal your level of thinking.

Ask task-level questions → You'll be assigned tasks
Ask strategic questions → You'll be included in strategy

The progression:

Entry-level: "How do I do this?"

Mid-level: "Why are we doing this?"

Senior-level: "Should we be doing this, or is there a better approach?"

How to level up your questions:

Before asking anything, ask yourself:

Have I analyzed this myself first?

Am I asking for direction or validation?

Could I propose 2-3 options instead of asking what to do?

Does this question demonstrate strategic thinking?

The framework:

Instead of: "What should I do about X?"

Ask: "I see three approaches to X: A, B, and C. I recommend B because [reasoning]. Does that align with your thinking, or am I missing something?"

See the difference?

One positions you as someone who needs direction.

The other positions you as someone who thinks strategically and just needs a course correction.

The professionals who get promoted fastest?

They started asking senior-level questions before they had senior-level titles.

Your March challenge:

This week, before asking your manager a question, write down 2-3 potential solutions first.

Present options, not problems.

The career advice that sounds good but will actually hold you back:

"Just be yourself."

Here's why that's incomplete:

"Yourself" at 23 isn't optimized for career success.

"Yourself" might:

→ Avoid difficult conversations
→ Not know how to negotiate
→ Struggle with executive communication
→ Have imposter syndrome that limits risk-taking
→ Default to people-pleasing instead of boundary-setting

"Be yourself" becomes an excuse to avoid growth.

The better advice:

"Become the version of yourself that achieves your career goals."

That means:

✅ Learning skills your current self doesn't have
✅ Developing confidence in areas where you're currently uncertain
✅ Communicating with clarity even when it feels uncomfortable
✅ Setting boundaries even though you're conflict-avoidant by nature
✅ Negotiating aggressively even though you'd rather be liked

You're not betraying yourself. You're evolving yourself.

The professionals with the strongest careers?

They didn't stay who they were at 22.

They BECAME who they needed to be to achieve their goals.

They:

→ Learned to speak up in meetings (even though they were naturally quiet)
→ Developed strategic thinking (even though they started as task executors)
→ Built executive presence (even though they felt like imposters)
→ Mastered negotiation (even though conflict made them uncomfortable)

Personal growth isn't fake. It's strategic evolution.

The question isn't "Am I being authentic?"

The question is "Am I becoming who I need to be to build the career I want?"

Your February reflection:

What's ONE capability you need to develop that doesn't come naturally to you?

Don't avoid it because "that's not who I am."

Develop it BECAUSE it's not who you are yet.

That's called growth.

The performance review script for when they say "You're doing great, but..."
Translation:

"You're doing great" = Your work is fine

"But..." = You're not getting promoted/the raise you wanted

Here's how to handle it:

Response Script:

"I appreciate the positive feedback. I want to make sure I understand the gap between my current performance and what's required for [promotion/raise].

Can you help me understand:

1. What specific outcomes or capabilities are missing?
Not 'you need more experience.' What SPECIFIC demonstrations would prove I'm ready?

2. What does success look like in the next 6 months?
What measurable goals should I be targeting?

3. If I achieve those outcomes, what's the timeline for advancement?
Are we talking next review cycle, or is there a different timeline?

4. Are there examples of people who successfully made this transition?
What did they do that I should model?

Let's document this so I have clear targets to work toward."

Why this works:

It forces specificity.

Vague feedback gives you nothing actionable.

Specific criteria gives you a roadmap or exposes that there is no plan.
It creates accountability.

If they document what you need to do and you do it, they have to follow through.

If they can't document it, there's no real path—you're waiting on luck.

What happens next:

Good sign:

They give you specific, measurable criteria and put it in writing.

Red flag:

They stay vague, can't give examples, push back on documentation.

Translation: There's no real plan. Promotion is political, not performance-based.

Your strategic move:

Give them 6 months to demonstrate there's a real path.

If you hit the documented milestones and nothing changes, start your job search.

The professionals who advance fastest?

They don't accept vague feedback. They force clarity.

Then they either execute and get promoted, or realize there's no path and capture their value elsewhere.

February reminder:

Performance reviews are negotiations, not report cards.

You're a business partner, not a student.

Act accordingly.

→ Make the career move you've been avoiding

The professionals who advance fastest?

They don't wait for Q2 to "start fresh." They finish Q1 with momentum.

Your March commitment:

Pick ONE goal. Execute relentlessly for 31 days. Enter Q2 with tangible results, not vague intentions.

By March 31, you'll either:

→ Have measurable progress and momentum for Q2
→ Have another quarter of excuses

I'm excited to share that I've been verified as Advanced in Video Editing by Descript. See it on my profile, with all my certifications. The 2026 goal list doesn't have to include everything by January 1st.

January and February were supposed to look one way.
They looked completely different.

Website got hacked. Had to rebuild from scratch.
Forbes output wasn't where I planned.
Podcast didn't launch.

And also:
11 people signed up for my bootcamp.
One left a review that genuinely made my day.
One customer bought an upcoming course — before I'd even built it.

So that's where I actually am. Not behind. Just honest about the gap between the plan and the reality.

March is about three things:
→ Building the internship course (launching April 1st)
→ 10 Forbes articles
→ Showing up here, consistently

No grand promises. Just the work.
