I spent years in “machine mode,” climbing the corporate ladder at Tesco and Salesforce, perfecting the art of the "Yes", and silencing my inner voice. Then, life broke me open.

After a personal crisis, I realised the cost of high performance at the expense of humanity. I was burned out, and a stranger to myself.

Today, I am a shepherdess for high-achieving women. I work with those who have survived the crisis, burnout, redundancy, or divorce, and are now standing at the threshold of "what next?" My clients are high-functioning on the outside, but depleted within. I help them bridge that gap.

My husband once told me something that hurt more than any performance review.

"We lose you to Tesco. You come home. We fix you up. We send you back."

At the time, I was managing £50 billion transformation programmes. I viewed my exhaustion as a premium price I was happy to pay for success. I didn't realise I was working a "Greedy Job.”

Greedy Jobs, according to sociologists, are built on a specific, often unspoken, requirement. You must have someone else handling the "messy" parts of life so you can remain "the machine."

We’ve normalised a system where your value is tied to how much of your humanity you’re willing to sacrifice. It’s an inequality trap that rewards those with a maintenance crew and punishes everyone else.

My husband saw I was becoming a project that needed constant repair just to stay functional.

If your job requires you to be "fixed" every weekend just to make it to Monday, you’re in survival mode.
