I just advised a fast-growing startup to rip out its entire Clay setup.

They were a series B company scaling their sales team.

And their outbound operation was breaking down.

The problem?

"Regressions."
"Tables breaking randomly."
"Reps losing trust in the data."

They had built a Ferrari engine inside a spreadsheet.

Here is how I see it:
Clay is the best prototyping tool out there atm.

It allows you to validate a workflow fast.

But it is NOT a production environment (yet - we'll see how they evolve).

When you need state management, high volume, and 99.9% reliability, spreadsheets break.

IMO the maturity curve of a GTME team looks like this:

The Lab (Prototype)

- Goal: Find signal
- Metric: Speed to insight

The Factory (Production)
- Tool: n8n + Neon (or Supabase, really any SQL DB)
- Goal: Scale signal
- Metric: Reliability & Uptime

TL;DR
Don't confuse your workbench with your factory.
Make it work in Clay. Make it scale in n8n.

Firmographics are bullshit.

"We sell to manufacturing companies with 100-1000 employees."

Cool. That's 50,000 companies in Europe.

Your SDR burns through the list at 1-2% response rates.

Treating food packaging companies the same as windmill manufacturers.

Same demographic box. Completely different problems.

Here's what actually predicts buying:

Problem intensity.

Not industry. Not company size. Not revenue.

The question isn't "who fits our demographic profile?"

It's "who has this problem hard enough to pay us to solve it?"

Example: You sell supply chain planning software.

Two companies;
- Both 500 employees
- Both manufacturing
- Both 50M revenue.

Company A: 50 distribution centers, 200 SKUs, weekly demand volatility.
Company B: 5 facilities, 2,000 custom products, multi-year contracts.

Same firmographics.

Problem intensity? 10x different.

TL;DR

Stop filtering by demographics.
Start vectorizing the problem.

Find what makes YOUR specific problem harder.
→ Scale? Complexity? Volatility?

Map where your solution creates value on each spectrum.

Score companies by problem intensity, not demographic fit.

Demographics describe companies.
Vectors describe problems.

Focus your efforts where the problem is most intense.
