Led a group of 4 peers over the course of one year in creating a research study exploring the sensory preferences of undergraduate students and their impact on GPA. Our manuscript is currently under review for publication, and in April of 2022 we presented a poster based on our work at the American Occupational Therapy Association's annual conference. 
Mentored a group of 4 students as they completed a research study investigating the normative data about sensory preferences of college students and their relationship with individual mindfulness. This manuscript is currently under review for publication.

Heres my story. 

In February of 2022, I decided to learn data analytics for fun. I created a Tik Tok account, and started documenting my journey to learn this new hobby (@anniesanalytics). 

Very soon, I realized that every day I was waking up and just wanting to write SQL, build visualizations, learn Python.... Work with data! So, I decided that once I finished graduate school (in Healthcare) in July, I was going to become a data analyst. 

Along the way, I have shared here and on Tik Tok everything I can about what it's like to learn data analytics, and how you can do it for free or at least very cheaply. I've shared about the ups and downs of job searching. I've even shared about how I have built a portfolio, and set myself up as a real analyst.

Did everyone abandon being a data analyst?

Two years ago "data analyst" seemed to be the hot job, especially on LinkedIn. Everyone was doing it/ trying to do it.

Since then we have had a massive shift in the market - many layoffs and the slimming down of companies combined with the introduction of AI has seriously reduced the number of available roles out there, especially at entry level.

Plus the American job economy is generally poor, with an abysmal amount of new jobs being added each month.

There's also been a glorification of other roles - people online treating data science and data engineering as "greater than" data analytics, and like analytics is just the "first step" into those other fields.

Almost all of my content creating peers who have been creating data/ data analytics content for as long as I have, have left their data jobs to seek higher pay and better hours as content creators and independent educators.

The success stories I saw on LinkedIn a few years ago were people working remote data jobs and loving it.

The success stories I see today are of vacations and coffee shop working sessions - because starting your own business gives you the full flexibility to work from wherever and whenever you want. 

That's a stark contrast to the many companies (like ZOOM!!) who have forced their employees to go back to the office. 

The tune online has changed a lot. The hype has cycled down I suppose, being a data analyst isn't such a hot profession anymore.

Perhaps that's part of why I find LinkedIn so boring these days. I am actually still a data analyst, and I enjoy it. I've had great career success this year while living a full and vibrant life. It's still hot for me.

I am once again asking you WHAT IS THE POINT OF USING AI TO LEAVE A COMMENT THAT JUST SUMMARIZES MY POST??

I haven't experienced much gender discrimination as a woman in tech.

It would be a better headline if I told you I have, but I imagine the tech world has come a long way from where it once was.

There's still certainly women who experience it, and my experience may change as I get into leadership positions (which seem to be more male dominated).

You know where I experience the worst gender discrimination? Surfing. Oh BOY do I experience it on the water.

Every time I come home from a session frustrated at the me who treat me like I'm a ghost or an idiot it reminds me that historically this is how women in the workplace have felt.

I am thankful & proud to work for a company where women are respected and given the same opportunies as men (Gitlab 🧡). 

I would also hypothesize that because we are a fully remote company, my fellow female coworkers have not been hit as hard as the average American woman by the currently widening gender pay gap - because part of which is being driven by women being forced to leave their jobs during RTO mandates due to shouldering the labor of caregiving.

I've never experienced burnout while in a job I actually like before, but this year has burned me out and it's led to confusing feelings.

In the past when I've experienced burnout it's been a red flag that I need to exit the situation. Quit my job, leave the relationship, etc. 

On the other hand, this year has been amazing! I have learned so much, been promoted (twice!), and been through many exciting life events.

The vibe of this year has been "Everything, at Maximum Effort, All the Time".... But most of those things were good things (COVID, looking at you for the Not Good List 👀).

When I started to feel burnt out in late July, I struggled to accept it. I felt guilty for feeling burned out.

In the past, my burnout was a failure of the situation that I was in. If I felt anything besides apathy, it was anger. I used the anger to motivate me to move on. 

This time around, admitting to myself that I felt burned out made me feel guilt and shame. I felt like I was inadequate and ungrateful, and I wanted to hide my burnout. 

("Sure, I accomplished great things this year. But if I got burned out doing it, how capable am I really?") 

Because just quitting my job (or quiet quitting) wasn't the right answer, I was paralyzed with apathy.

It took me a month to admit to myself that I was feeling burned out, and another month to feel like I could talk to anyone else about it.

Unfortunately and annoyingly, recovering from burnout is a super slow process. Two things I have done that have helped a lot are taking up knitting, and starting to foster dogs.

Sitting by the ocean with one of our foster dogs while knitting peacefully is peak recovery energy.

I am not still fully recovered, and these feelings are hard to admit to. I'm not even quite sure why I'm sharing this, but I know I can't be the only person who has felt this way.

I often hear stories of data leaders (Head of Data, CDO, etc) who came out of business roles and into data roles. But I have not heard much of the reverse.

"I was a financial analyst for about 5 years to start my career, and then I joined a data team....".

This is likely a result of selection bias- I am not exposed to the bios of leaders in other disciplines like sales or product.

But I am curious - is it just as common for people to jump from data into business roles? Or is it less common for now because titles like "data analyst" are much newer than roles like 'financial analyst'?

Just a general poll to my audience - judging by my last post about data analytics there are surprisingly more humans on here than I expected.

To all who read my whole post the other day until the AI prompt at the end: I'm not sure if ChatGPT was down the other day, but I was surprised to open my comment section to a lot of human comments, no AI summaries of my post, and no AI interpretations of the origins of techno music.

Fun fact: techno music was born in Detroit, not Europe. It originated in clubs dominated by black and queer people. However, it was picked up pretty quickly by Europe / the Brits, and has been adopted into mainstream culture. In the techno clubs I've been to in the states these days, the average skin color is white (overwhelmingly so).

*Me*: ok sue me but I actually LIKE some corporate terms and practices for managing everyday life.

"Let's circle back to this later"?..... Helpful term.

Triaging problems in a logical and methodical way? Practical.

*The people I was having dinner with*: That sounds like the headline of a LinkedIn post.

This is a real story - and the person who said that actually didn't know I post stuff on LinkedIn sometimes 😅

I stand by my statement.

Maybe I won't go so far as to say "let's circle back and double click on that later" but there ARE things I have picked up from my corporate job that can be useful in my regular life.

Growing up with the familiar mantra of studying hard, earning good grades, and landing a stable job, I embarked on that journey like many from an African background. However, the third part took a bit longer—I landed my first job four years post-graduation. Yet, amidst this, I was always torn between the idea of pursuing passion and finding tangible rewards.

Taking a leap of faith with no formal training, I reached out to an organization that would change my trajectory forever. That initial interview, more of a heartfelt conversation, allowed me to showcase my genuine care for nurturing youths and transforming their strengths into meaningful opportunities.

Currently, I'm immersing myself in the realm of learning design, striving understand how to craft solutions that not only educate but also drive behavioral change and yield tangible results. Impact is at the core of my work, and I'm eager to delve deeper into measuring the efficacy of the learning solutions I create.

Moreover, I'm excited about connecting with L&D professionals to glean insights from their experiences and further expand my understanding of this dynamic field.
