Led a group of 4 peers over the course of one year in creating a research study exploring the sensory preferences of undergraduate students and their impact on GPA. Our manuscript is currently under review for publication, and in April of 2022 we presented a poster based on our work at the American Occupational Therapy Association's annual conference. 
Mentored a group of 4 students as they completed a research study investigating the normative data about sensory preferences of college students and their relationship with individual mindfulness. This manuscript is currently under review for publication.

Heres my story. 

In February of 2022, I decided to learn data analytics for fun. I created a Tik Tok account, and started documenting my journey to learn this new hobby (@anniesanalytics). 

Very soon, I realized that every day I was waking up and just wanting to write SQL, build visualizations, learn Python.... Work with data! So, I decided that once I finished graduate school (in Healthcare) in July, I was going to become a data analyst. 

Along the way, I have shared here and on Tik Tok everything I can about what it's like to learn data analytics, and how you can do it for free or at least very cheaply. I've shared about the ups and downs of job searching. I've even shared about how I have built a portfolio, and set myself up as a real analyst.

If it weren't for my daughter, I probably wouldn't have become a data analyst.

Here's the story:

My wife and I were expecting our daughter and I was stuck in a job that I was becoming increasingly unhappy in. I knew I wanted a change, but didn't know what.

I had heard about data analytics, and was interested, but wasn't motivated enough for a full blown career change.

But I began thinking about the example I'd be setting for my daughter. Did I want her dad to be someone who was afraid of taking risks and would stay stuck in a job he didn't like, just because it was convenient?

Or did I want her to have a dad who took risks, made moves, and did what he wanted?

I chose the latter and threw myself into intense learning.

I was completely motivated and resolved. Once my daughter was born, the passion only intensified.

The same motivation led me into content creation.

People often think that having kids means the "end of their life" in some way. Like they'll lose so much and that career growth will be stunted.

For me, the complete opposite was true.

Having kids made me more motivated than ever before. I found greater purpose. I want to be an example. I want to give them the best life I can. I'm no longer living just for myself.

And that pushes me to be better in so many ways.

There are no "cheat codes" for breaking into data.

No silver bullet strategies.

But people keep looking for them.

It takes a lot of hard work, but even people who are desperate will try to avoid it at all costs.

I've worked 1-on-1 with such people.

Here's where the hard work comes in:

1) Skill development

Keep working on core skills as much as possible. No "I don't like SQL" or "I don't have the patience." Don't try to cheat employers with the bare minimum. WORK!

2) Portfolio: building projects

THIS is what separates the haves from the have-nots. People think they're done after one crappy guided project on YT. They'll have "build a project" on their to-do list for months. BUILD! Again and again and again and again and again. This is how you get better and show off your skills.

3) Network and apply

Relentlessy. People will apply to hundreds of jobs with their mediocre resume and never refine it. Keep tweaking, keep optimizing, keep reaching out to as many people as you can. Post, comment, and DM your way to a network. Again, this takes WORK!

You can't be lazy. 

You're targeting a life change. Act like it.

Even with all the hard work, it will STILL take time because it's a such competitive market right now.

If you're lazy about it, you don't have a chance.

PS - What's one hard piece of advice you'd give someone that most people avoid??

When you’re the parent of a toddler, your camera roll gets filled with pictures like this.

She genuinely enjoys taking photos.

Even though she has 2 of her own cameras, dads phone will always be more fun to use.

Having to regularly sift through my camera roll is worth letting her embrace something she really enjoys doing. You never know how their interests may evolve and develop!
