Heres my story. 

In February of 2022, I decided to learn data analytics for fun. I created a Tik Tok account, and started documenting my journey to learn this new hobby (@anniesanalytics). 

Very soon, I realized that every day I was waking up and just wanting to write SQL, build visualizations, learn Python.... Work with data! So, I decided that once I finished graduate school (in Healthcare) in July, I was going to become a data analyst. 

Along the way, I have shared here and on Tik Tok everything I can about what it's like to learn data analytics, and how you can do it for free or at least very cheaply. I've shared about the ups and downs of job searching. I've even shared about how I have built a portfolio, and set myself up as a real analyst.

Did everyone abandon being a data analyst?

Two years ago "data analyst" seemed to be the hot job, especially on LinkedIn. Everyone was doing it/ trying to do it.

Since then we have had a massive shift in the market - many layoffs and the slimming down of companies combined with the introduction of AI has seriously reduced the number of available roles out there, especially at entry level.

Plus the American job economy is generally poor, with an abysmal amount of new jobs being added each month.

There's also been a glorification of other roles - people online treating data science and data engineering as "greater than" data analytics, and like analytics is just the "first step" into those other fields.

Almost all of my content creating peers who have been creating data/ data analytics content for as long as I have, have left their data jobs to seek higher pay and better hours as content creators and independent educators.

The success stories I saw on LinkedIn a few years ago were people working remote data jobs and loving it.

The success stories I see today are of vacations and coffee shop working sessions - because starting your own business gives you the full flexibility to work from wherever and whenever you want. 

That's a stark contrast to the many companies (like ZOOM!!) who have forced their employees to go back to the office. 

The tune online has changed a lot. The hype has cycled down I suppose, being a data analyst isn't such a hot profession anymore.

Perhaps that's part of why I find LinkedIn so boring these days. I am actually still a data analyst, and I enjoy it. I've had great career success this year while living a full and vibrant life. It's still hot for me.

I am once again asking you WHAT IS THE POINT OF USING AI TO LEAVE A COMMENT THAT JUST SUMMARIZES MY POST??

I haven't experienced much gender discrimination as a woman in tech.

It would be a better headline if I told you I have, but I imagine the tech world has come a long way from where it once was.

There's still certainly women who experience it, and my experience may change as I get into leadership positions (which seem to be more male dominated).

You know where I experience the worst gender discrimination? Surfing. Oh BOY do I experience it on the water.

Every time I come home from a session frustrated at the me who treat me like I'm a ghost or an idiot it reminds me that historically this is how women in the workplace have felt.

I am thankful & proud to work for a company where women are respected and given the same opportunies as men (Gitlab 🧡). 

I would also hypothesize that because we are a fully remote company, my fellow female coworkers have not been hit as hard as the average American woman by the currently widening gender pay gap - because part of which is being driven by women being forced to leave their jobs during RTO mandates due to shouldering the labor of caregiving.

I've never experienced burnout while in a job I actually like before, but this year has burned me out and it's led to confusing feelings.

In the past when I've experienced burnout it's been a red flag that I need to exit the situation. Quit my job, leave the relationship, etc. 

On the other hand, this year has been amazing! I have learned so much, been promoted (twice!), and been through many exciting life events.

The vibe of this year has been "Everything, at Maximum Effort, All the Time".... But most of those things were good things (COVID, looking at you for the Not Good List 👀).

When I started to feel burnt out in late July, I struggled to accept it. I felt guilty for feeling burned out.

In the past, my burnout was a failure of the situation that I was in. If I felt anything besides apathy, it was anger. I used the anger to motivate me to move on. 

This time around, admitting to myself that I felt burned out made me feel guilt and shame. I felt like I was inadequate and ungrateful, and I wanted to hide my burnout. 

("Sure, I accomplished great things this year. But if I got burned out doing it, how capable am I really?") 

Because just quitting my job (or quiet quitting) wasn't the right answer, I was paralyzed with apathy.

It took me a month to admit to myself that I was feeling burned out, and another month to feel like I could talk to anyone else about it.

Unfortunately and annoyingly, recovering from burnout is a super slow process. Two things I have done that have helped a lot are taking up knitting, and starting to foster dogs.

Sitting by the ocean with one of our foster dogs while knitting peacefully is peak recovery energy.

I am not still fully recovered, and these feelings are hard to admit to. I'm not even quite sure why I'm sharing this, but I know I can't be the only person who has felt this way.

I often hear stories of data leaders (Head of Data, CDO, etc) who came out of business roles and into data roles. But I have not heard much of the reverse.

"I was a financial analyst for about 5 years to start my career, and then I joined a data team....".

This is likely a result of selection bias- I am not exposed to the bios of leaders in other disciplines like sales or product.

But I am curious - is it just as common for people to jump from data into business roles? Or is it less common for now because titles like "data analyst" are much newer than roles like 'financial analyst'?

Just a general poll to my audience - judging by my last post about data analytics there are surprisingly more humans on here than I expected.

To all who read my whole post the other day until the AI prompt at the end: I'm not sure if ChatGPT was down the other day, but I was surprised to open my comment section to a lot of human comments, no AI summaries of my post, and no AI interpretations of the origins of techno music.

Fun fact: techno music was born in Detroit, not Europe. It originated in clubs dominated by black and queer people. However, it was picked up pretty quickly by Europe / the Brits, and has been adopted into mainstream culture. In the techno clubs I've been to in the states these days, the average skin color is white (overwhelmingly so).

*Me*: ok sue me but I actually LIKE some corporate terms and practices for managing everyday life.

"Let's circle back to this later"?..... Helpful term.

Triaging problems in a logical and methodical way? Practical.

*The people I was having dinner with*: That sounds like the headline of a LinkedIn post.

This is a real story - and the person who said that actually didn't know I post stuff on LinkedIn sometimes 😅

I stand by my statement.

Maybe I won't go so far as to say "let's circle back and double click on that later" but there ARE things I have picked up from my corporate job that can be useful in my regular life.

Black Rock Coffee Bar's onboarding for Home Office employees includes 3 days of barista training.

That means every remote employee in the back-end of the company gets to walk in the shoes of those in the front-end.

It's an incredible concept.

Not only was it a ton of fun, but it also connected me with those I support and those who will be reading some of my reports on a daily and weekly basis.

I've never seen another company do this, but I'm 100% sold on the idea. Company leaders should take note.

I was a barista about 12 years ago, so I had a blast getting behind the bar again. I was the oldest person working there by 10-14 years 😂 but everyone was very hospitable, supportive, and a pleasure to work with.

BRCB has a special and unique culture and I've already felt like I fit right in.

It's been a full circle experience for me. I loved being a barista in college and considered working in the coffee biz my whole life. Now, I get to work for a coffee company again, but on a different side of the business.

My job was listed as "in office" in the posting.

But when I read the job description, it said "hybrid."

I was open to hybrid depending on the arrangement, so I applied. Plus it was a company I genuinely wanted to work for.

When I interviewed, I found out that "hybrid" to them meant coming into the office 1-2x a MONTH.

I was totally ok with that! 

Pretty ideal to me actually.

(Plus going into the office meant working out of the roastery. Sign me up!)

Basically, mostly remote but have to be local.

So I guess the lesson here is don't write-off an opportunity just because it says in-office or hybrid. If it looks like a good role, apply and understand what those terms mean to them. Every company is different.

Data analytics in a nutshell.

Junior analyst: "Why isn't this code working?"

Senior analyst: "Why is this code working?"

You'll always be confused, but for different reasons.

One thing in life is certain. 

If someone says “quick data pull,” you’re about to rebuild the entire data model.

If there's one thing I've learned about LinkedIn after 3+ years of writing here, it's this.

Do not over think your posts.

Seriously. That post that's taking you 2 hours to write will not perform as well as the post that will take you 15 minutes to write.

There are trends, but there are no real rules. As soon as you learn all of the "best practices," there will be someone who is defying all of them and still crushing it.

This is more true now than ever.

No one actually knows what "works" anymore.

Your personality, and the quality of what you say is more important than how you say it. 

Focus on action, getting more information, and making a connection with your audience. This will be more valuable than the wording of your next post.

PS - I still struggle with overthinking all the time. But just try to let go. It'll serve you well.

Being a good employee isn't what gets you promoted.

It's being trustworthy.

Ultimately, the decision to give someone more responsibility comes down to, "Can we trust this person to do/lead/manage xyz?"

I've been promoted at various points in my career and have been involved in promoting others. Being a person who is on top of their workload, taking initiative, and leading, have always been core contributors.

So yes, be good at your work. Be technically savvy.

But also make an impact. Take ownership.

Show you can be trusted with more.

Because these will be the greatest markers of success.

I've tried many SQL courses over the years. There's a lot of them.

But from what I've seen, the best ones have this:

1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 - learning SQL requires getting your reps in. A good course will give you lots of practice
   
2. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 - there are SO many courses that pad learning time to increase the length of the course. You want to learn the good stuff without unnecessary fluff.
   
3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 - I've seen courses ruined by the simple fact that I can't stand the instructor. Sounds silly but it makes a difference.

Some of my favorite courses are ones I came across years ago. I still recommend these. But there are newer resources that I 100% recommend as well.

This week, I streamed Miro's Canvas 25 event.

I actually love seeing how AI is reshaping collaboration and project planning. It's such a great use case for AI.

The hardest part with project planning for me is always putting those ideas "on paper" and creating structure around them. And tbh, not too many platforms nail this.

Miro has always been great at this, but AI is making it even easier, which I love to see.

Here are some of my key takeaways:

1. Sidekicks

These are AI agents that live on the canvas. Think of it like a teammate who can ideate and project plan with you. But it also helps you take those ideas and materialize them on the canvas.

2. Flows

This allows you to execute every step of the plan directly on the canvas with team collaboration. That means teams don't need to leave the canvas into their own silo's to complete their share of the work.

3. AI Connections

Miro can now directly integrate with tools like Claude Code, Github Copilot, Cursor, VS Code (and many more) so that it has instant context on what your org is doing. 

Collaboration is a key part of what I do as an analyst and developer, so I love tools like these. It'll be interesting to see how these changes continue evolving planning and project collaboration.
