Interesting to see McKinsey saying out loud what a lot of leaders still treat as secondary: in the age of AI, the real advantage may be stronger brains, not just faster systems. 

Their January 2026 report argues that “brain capital,” meaning brain health plus brain skills, is tied to resilience, productivity, and growth. 

That should not be a radical idea. And yet, in many organizations, we still reward the exact opposite. 
- We praise speed over recovery.
- Availability over depth.
- Endurance over judgment.

And then we act surprised when decision quality drops, creativity narrows, and senior people start confusing cognitive strain with high performance.

A lot of “performance culture” is just brain depletion with better branding.

If AI is taking over more of the routine, the human premium goes up, not down. Clear thinking. Discernment. Emotional regulation. Good judgment under pressure. The ability to see what matters before everyone else is buried in noise. That is the asset. McKinsey’s point is that this is not soft. It is economic.

So, why are some companies are investing millions in AI while still treating human capacity like an infinite resource?

The leaders who will matter most over the next few years will not be the ones who can simply do more, faster. They will be the ones who can protect the conditions for better thinking, better decisions, and steadier execution while everyone else is drowning in acceleration.

We may be entering a moment where “brain health” stops sounding like wellness language and starts sounding like strategy.

The human advantage: Stronger brains in the age of AI

Confidence is overrated.

Somewhere along the way, leadership got tangled up with the idea that you must look certain at all times. No hesitation. No doubt. No visible thinking.

So leaders “fake it until they make it.” And to be fair, sometimes that works.

There are moments when you step into a role that is bigger than you feel ready for. Moments when the team needs steadiness more than your internal monologue. In those situations, acting confident can buy you time to grow into the job.

The thing is, “faking it” is a bridge, not the end. Because people can tell the difference between a leader who is stretching and a leader who is pretending. One creates space for learning and momentum. The other creates distance, politics, and quiet mistrust.

Real confidence doesn’t come from projecting certainty. It comes from being able to stay steady when you don’t have it yet. To say, “Here’s what we know.” “Here’s what we don’t.” “And here’s the next move.”

That kind of leadership looks calm, honest, and usable.

Where has “faking it” helped you act with courage, and where has it started to get in the way?

Most people still talk about resilience as if it were endurance: Keep going. Push through. Stay available. Absorb more.

"Look admirable from the outside" is another way to put it. But in practice, this often leads to an accumulation of risks.

Because resilience is not the ability to take hit after hit without showing strain. It is the ability to stay operational under pressure.

In real leadership, resilience looks much less heroic and much more practical:
⚖️ stability under load
💨 faster recovery after disruption
📆 better decision quality across hard weeks
➡️ a steadier execution rhythm when conditions change

That matters because leadership failure usually shows up as gradual degradation.
→ Conversations get sloppier.
→ Decisions get slower.
→ Clarity drops.
→ Rework increases.
→ Patience thins.

It's time to reframe resilience: 

💡What helps you return to baseline quickly enough to keep functioning well?

That is a very different question that moves the conversation away from performance and toward operational reality, where re-entry routines matter, clear decisions matter, and non-negotiables to maintain capacity matter.

The result is stability, which is a strategic advantage when the whole system is wobbling.

Most high performers respond to pressure the same way: they double down on planning. More analysis. More checking.

But when you're depleted, this does not get you better results. You get slower cycles, more rework, and more reactivity.

It usually shows up fast: long hours with little traction, sharper edges in meetings, less creativity, and difficulty prioritizing because everything feels urgent.

At that point, the fix is rarely more discipline.

It is restoring the conditions that make clarity possible again: energy, recovery, and attention.

A useful experiment: for one week, add a short, few minutes, "airlock" between meetings and activities (all day long). Stop, let the loops close, then start again. Watch what changes in the work itself.

I'm betting you'll find more focus and more energy.

Perfectionism has a great PR team. We call it “high standards,” reward it with promotions, confuse it with excellence.

The dictionary gives the word two definitions: "1) the doctrine that the perfection of moral character constitutes a person's highest good..."

And "...2) “a disposition to regard anything short of perfection as unacceptable.”

Notice the first is a process goal, which the second, the one most of us fall into, is a moving goalpost. What even is perfection?

Psychologist Elizabeth Lombardo lists the signs many of us recognize instantly: all-or-nothing thinking, extremes, not delegating because “they won’t do it right,” endless improving, heavy “should” language, rumination, and procrastination when you might not excel.

Perfectionism often looks more like fear dressed up as professionalism.
It keeps you “busy” polishing details, so you can avoid the part that actually costs something: shipping, asking, selling, deciding, being seen.

So how do you get the upside without letting it run your week?

One way is to assign your inner perfectionist a job.
Perfectionism is useful when the task needs precision.

It’s sabotage when the task needs movement.

Try this quick filter:
➡️ What level of excellence is required here? (Regulated, client-facing, reputation-critical?)
➡️ What’s the point of diminishing returns? (Where does “better” stop being worth it?)
➡️ What is the next action that creates real information? (Send it. Book the call. Make the decision.)

I like to remember this quote from W. Somerset Maugham:
“Perfection is a trifle dull… better not quite achieved.”

What’s one app/device habit you’d be willing to revisit this month?

Nobody can outthink exhaustion.

In leadership teams under sustained pressure, I see a common pattern: high performers double down on thinking. They plan more. They analyze more. They check more.

It makes sense. Thinking is the tool that’s always worked.

But when the baseline is depleted, thinking becomes expensive. And you don’t get better results. Your performance becomes more volatile, cycles slow, you redo work more often. And you feel way more reactive.

Tell me it's not so.

It usually shows up like this:
→ “I can’t get traction” despite long hours
→ Sharper edges in meetings (little things land bigger)
→ Reduced flexibility and creativity
→ Prioritization collapses because everything feels urgent

Most people try to solve this with “more discipline.,” when we really need to look at operating conditions: energy, recovery, and attention. When those foundations are stable, clarity gets easier.

A simple experiment (one week):
Pick one capacity lever you typically sacrifice and protect it like it’s a deliverable:
💤 Your sleep window
🧘 A micro-downshift after intense meetings (2–5 minutes to reset)
💡 A protected focus block (no meetings, no Slack, no “quick questions”)

Then watch what changes, not in mood, but in outputs: speed of decisions, quality of conversations, ability to say no without spiraling, reduction in rework

If those improve, you’ve found the real bottleneck.

Resilience isn’t about “toughing it out.”
It’s about building conditions where you can stay clear, steady, and effective when nothing is ideal.

What’s the first capacity lever you sacrifice when things heat up?

All those extra yeses feel generous in the moment.
They are not. They are overcommitment.

Too many leaders are still being praised for availability, responsiveness, and willingness to take on more, while the actual cost of that behavior gets ignored until the damage is everywhere:
→ Decision quality drops.
→ Focus fragments.
→ Teams get mixed signals.
→ Priorities blur.
→ Rework rises.
→ Patience disappears.

And everyone wonders why performance feels harder than it should.

Too much commitment is not commitment. Period.

A leader who cannot say no clearly is training the system to expect unlimited access to limited capacity. There is nothing sustainable about that. Nothing strategic either.

Every yes has a cost. That cost may be speed on something else. Quality somewhere else. Recovery. Attention. A better decision that never gets made because the leader is too cognitively overloaded to see clearly.

Strong leaders make trade-offs visible, sequence, protect focus, do only what matters, and understand the cost of yes.

Sometimes the most responsible thing a leader can say is: No. Not now. Not this way. Not at the cost of what matters more.

Where are you still rewarding over-accommodation in yourself or in your team, then acting surprised by the drop in quality?

As I prep for the coming week, I keep thinking about how much cognitive fuel we burn worrying about the future.

And yes, it feels intense right now.

But humans have a predictable blind spot: we are bad at predicting how we’ll feel in the future. Research on affective forecasting shows an “impact bias,” meaning we tend to overestimate both the intensity and the duration of future emotional reactions. (Wilson & Gilbert, 2003)

So we pay twice:
→ Up front, in stress and distraction
→ Later, when reality arrives (usually smaller than the movie we ran)

Even in anxiety research, uncertainty amplifies threat estimates. We inflate probability, inflate cost, and start treating worst-case as base-case. (Grupe & Nitschke, 2013)

So here’s the question I’m sitting with this Monday:
Where are you burning energy fighting a future that may never arrive, instead of executing on the reality right in front of you?

A practical reset. Three questions:
1️⃣ What is the actual constraint, decision, or conversation in front of you today?
2️⃣ What outcome are you mentally rehearsing with zero new data?
3️⃣ What is the smallest move that would create information fast? A call. A draft. A test. A clear ask.

To be clear, scenario planning has a place. But only when it’s intentional, time-boxed, and connected to action.

Otherwise it’s not strategy. It’s just stress with better branding.

Monday thoughts.

If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or ability, what would you choose?

Not a new title.
Not a bigger network.
Not “more time.”

A real upgrade, something that would change how you lead, decide, and show up under pressure.

Mine might be instant emotional clarity: the ability to name what I’m feeling (and why) in real time, before it leaks into tone, speed, or assumptions.

Because most avoidable leadership damage comes from some unrecognized state:
➡️ You call it “urgency,” but it’s anxiety.
➡️ You call it “standards,” but it’s control.
➡️ You call it “being direct,” but it’s impatience.
And when your inner state drives the room, everyone else pays the tax.

So I’m curious:
If you could wake up tomorrow with one new quality or ability (something you don’t fully have today) what would it be?

And a second layer, if you want to go there:
What would change immediately in your work (or life) if you had it?

Really, it's not a time problem. It's a recovery problem.

I'm in the business of having enough energy to sustain performance, so I've got to talk about this.

Athletes know that if you skip recovery, performance drops. And it drops fast.

But leaders? Founders? Operators in nonstop environments? We treat being “on” as a sign of honor, status or virtue.  😅

It's just a bad habit.

No one sustains 100% output without paying for it. The cost comes in judgment, mood, health, and decision quality. 

Recovery is what holds performance up.

Even “flow” isn’t just struggle → brilliance.
It’s a cycle: Struggle → Release → Flow (often in ~90-minute cycles) → Recovery
No recovery = no repeatable flow.

So what counts as recovery when your calendar won’t cooperate?

A few principles that actually work:
✅ Sleep is not optional. It’s the full-system reset: brain cleanup, memory consolidation, tissue repair.
✅ Work with your ultradian rhythm. You’re built for 90–120 minutes of output, then renewal. When you get yawny, restless, snacky, unfocused—that’s not weakness. That’s physiology.
✅ Detachment matters. Not “checking email on the couch.” Turn off completely.
✅ Use your breath as a switch. Long exhale (5–6 seconds) turns down fight-or-flight.

This is my favorite high ROI move: take a 3-minute recovery break every 90 minutes. Protect it like a meeting.

🚨 Idée reçue sur les RH n°2 : “Les DRH décident des salaires.”
“J’aurais bien voulu t'augmenter… mais la DRH n’a pas validé.”
Beaucoup de collaborateurs ont déjà entendu cette phrase.

Et à ce moment-là, le DRH devient le problème.

Celui qui bloque.
Celui qui refuse.
Celui qui dit non.

Sauf que la réalité est rarement celle-là.

Dans la plupart des entreprises, le DRH ne décide pas des salaires.

Il fixe un cadre.

Il garantit l’équité.

Il challenge les propositions.

Mais la discussion salariale appartient d’abord au Manager.
C’est lui qui connaît la performance.
C’est lui qui porte la reconnaissance.

Et c’est lui qui doit être capable d’expliquer une décision.

Le problème, c’est que cette conversation est souvent inconfortable.

Dire oui engage un budget.
Dire non peut créer de la frustration.

Alors certains Managers choisissent une troisième option.
Une phrase très pratique : “Ce n’est pas moi. C’est la DRH.”

Le DRH devient alors le paratonnerre.

Mais dans une organisation saine, les rôles sont simples :
Le manager explique et assume.
Le DRH garantit la cohérence et l’équité.

Parce qu’au fond, un collaborateur accepte plus facilement un non…
Qu’un non dont personne ne veut être l’auteur.

Et vous, vous l’avez déjà entendue cette phrase : “Ce n’est pas moi, c’est la DRH” ?

🚨 Idée reçue sur les DRH n°3 : “Les DRH protègent toujours l’entreprise.”
Cette phrase, on l’entend souvent.
Parfois avec un peu d’ironie.

Parfois avec beaucoup de méfiance.
“Les DRH sont toujours du côté de l’entreprise.”

Et à première vue, ça semble logique.

Les DRH sont salariés de l’entreprise.

Ils participent aux décisions.

Ils accompagnent les dirigeants.

Donc forcément…ils protègent l’entreprise.

Mais la réalité est un peu plus subtile.

Un bon DRH ne protège pas l’entreprise contre les salariés.

Il protège l’entreprise des mauvaises décisions humaines.

Des décisions prises trop vite.
Des décisions injustes.
Des décisions qui régleraient un problème aujourd’hui… mais en créeraient trois demain.

C’est pour ça que les DRH passent parfois pour ceux qui compliquent les choses.

Quand un manager veut aller vite.

Quand un dirigeant veut trancher immédiatement.

Quand la solution paraît “évidente”.

Le DRH pose une question de plus.
Pas pour ralentir.
Pour éviter les dégâts.

Parce que les décisions RH ont une particularité : Elles ne sont jamais seulement juridiques.

Elles sont humaines et durables.

Et ce qui protège vraiment une entreprise sur le long terme, ce ne sont pas des décisions rapides.

Ce sont des décisions justes et tenables.

Alors oui.

Les DRH protègent l’entreprise.

Mais pas de la manière que l’on imagine.
