In a world where bad news dominates the headlines, stories like the global support flowing into Jamaica restore faith in humanity.

Samaritan's Purse set up and emergency field Hospital in Black River, St Elizabeth. International teams from the USA, Spain, and Barbados are setting up and staffing alongside local doctors, 2 additional field hospitals in Falmouth and Montego Bay.

Individuals from around the world are contributing to the recovery efforts. Here are some of the countries providing support and relief supplies.

🇨🇦 Canada 

$7 million in emergency aid including food, water, & medical support. Canadian Armed Forces deployed to help deliver relief & coordinate logistics.

🇺🇸 USA 

From airlifts to deliveries, US$12 million in life-saving support is already on the ground.

U.S. teams aided by the Jamaica Defense Force have distributed thousands of hygiene and shelter kits, mobile medical units, and over 330,000 pounds of food and water.

🇬🇧 UK

£7.5 million for humanitarian relief and disaster recovery efforts including shelter kits and water filters.

🇪🇺 EU

Water treatment and production equipment, storage tanks, camping and sleeping gear  energy-generation units, and hygiene supplies.

🇫🇷 France

French naval vessel delivered a shipment of European Union and international aid.

🇳🇱 The Netherlands

Dutch Navy support ship delivered power generators, solar lamps, batteries, medical and health supplies, emergency shelter materials, and vehicles from EU.

🇦🇪 UAE

Essential food items, critical shelter material, support for severely damaged infrastructure.

🇧🇸 The Bahamas 

A monetary contribution of up to BSD $2 million and relief supplies including cases of bottled water, tarpaulin, and respirator masks.

🇧🇧 Barbados

Two containers with tarpaulins, cots, and emergency generators. 5 000 food kits.

🇹🇹 Trinidad and Tobago 

8 containers of critical relief supplies.

🇬🇾 Guyana 
 
Generators, tarpaulins and chainsaws

Partnering with supermarket chains to distribute vouchers in affected areas.

🇪🇸 Spain

Deployed personnel and relief supplies. A team of Spanish volunteers including doctors, nurses, and firefighters will establish an emergency field hospital in Falmouth. The fully self-sufficient facility, equipped with its own generators, water purifiers, and solar panels, will operate at no cost to the Government of Jamaica

 🇸🇻 El Salvador 

3 humanitarian aid planes with more than 300 rescuers plus over 50 tons of relief supplies.

🇯🇵 Japan 

Sleeping bags, tents, water purifiers, and other essential items.

🇮🇳 India

A BHISHM Medical Trauma Unit and 20 tons of relief including generators, tents, bedding, kitchen and hygiene kits, and solar lanterns.

As you know if you've been following me, I was in Jamaica up until the beginning of October. 

I felt grounded and at home. 

This image is eerie

It's really devastating to see over one third of the island and such a state. please do whatever you can to help.

USD $7 billion.
That’s 30% of Jamaica’s GDP.
Imagine the U.S. losing $8 trillion overnight.
That’s the scale we’re talking about.

I know everyone’s posting “Jamaica Strong” today, but strength has a price tag.

In two days, Hurricane Melissa didn’t just destroy homes, it reset an economy.
The west is still in crisis.
Entire communities in St. James, Hanover, and Westmoreland are unrecognizable.

The difference this time?
The damage isn’t abstract. It’s measurable and massive.

In Montego Bay:
→ Tourism corridors are offline.
→ Thousands of hotel workers are without income.
→ Farmers who supply those hotels have lost entire harvests.

In St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland and Trelawny:
→ Roads collapsed.
→ Livelihoods disappeared.
→ Recovery feels distant.

And in Kingston?
→ Power’s back.
→ Businesses are reopening.
→ But the cost of rebuilding will last for generations.

Let that sink in.

$7 billion gone in 48 hours.
That’s schools, bridges, businesses, farms, and futures.

Some numbers worth remembering:
→ The Caribbean emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gases.
→ Yet, climate events cost the region up to 8% of GDP every year.
→ For small nations, that means rebuilding while still paying for the last storm.

Here’s the truth:
When countries that pollute the least pay the highest price,
When resilience becomes our only export,
When “bouncing back” is treated like destiny instead of consequence

Something is deeply wrong.

But even in ruin, the stories remain the same.
A mother sweeping mud from her living room.
A child laughing in the rain.
A farmer replanting, because hope doesn’t need electricity.

That’s not charity.
That’s identity.
That’s endurance.

The real question isn’t how strong Jamaica is.
It’s how long small nations are expected to carry the weight of global negligence alone.

📝 A Personal Note: Recovery from Hurricane Melissa will require a team effort by Jamaicans at home and abroad with support from friends of Jamaica 🇯🇲  

I was in Jamaica at the end of September and beginning of October. It was wonderful to be home. I felt grounded. I left feeling refreshed and determined to find a way to spend more time there. That's why, when Hurricane Melissa struck, it was devastating. 

Fortunately, my relatives in Jamaica and Cuba are safe but Hurricane Melissa displaced many individuals and Families in southwest Jamaica.  The storm destroyed homes, wiped out farms on prime agricultural land, uprooted trees, plowed roads under, demolished historical sites, and toppled hydro and telephone towers.

Rebuilding will be a daunting task. There are many ways to contribute based on our individual talents, skills, and finances.

It has been heartwarming to see the many individuals, organizations, and countries who have been pouring out support for Jamaica at this time of need. Thank you.

I'm pleased to share an initiative spearheaded by Jamaican-born Hollywood stuntman and award-winning filmmaker Roy T. Anderson. I've showcased his work before.

Two days before the storm made landfall, Roy was in St Elizabeth for his brother's funeral. The parish became Ground Zero for Hurricane Melissa's devastation. He was still in Jamaica when Hurricane Melissa struck.
 
He returned to New Jersey on Monday night but he is flying back to Jamaica in the morning to contribute to the relief effort.

Roy and other Jamaican film and TV professionals are using their skills and resources to make a difference. Through "Let's Rebuild Jamaica Strong", they are delivering tangible aid to families and individuals in remote communities. 

Their focus is on providing meals and other desperately needed supplies. They have teamed up with a group of trades professionals who are donating their skills, time, and tools to repair and rebuild homes.

The team will document in a documentary series entitled "In the Eye Of the Storm: Jamaica Rebuilds", their work and the contributions of the many organizations who are working on the ground to assist in the recovery. 

Like Spike Lee's "When the Levees Broke", it will capture the resilience and determination of people recovering from disaster.

Fresh out of school, I landed a dream role: Chrysler’s high-potential design program. By day, I was designing cars; by night, earning my Master’s degree. I thought I was set to change the industry.

But reality slapped me hard.

I was hired for my “out-of-the-box” thinking yet every time I challenged the status quo, the message was loud and clear: Get back in the box.

The leaders above me? Brilliant engineers but not great leaders. They knew torque and tensile strength, but not how to build people. Their focus: creating the perfect specs. Their blind spot: empowering talent.

The breaking point came in 2005. Our team had one goal: match Toyota’s quality numbers. I asked what I thought was the obvious question: “Why aren’t we aiming to beat them?”

My boss gave me a glare and shook his head: “Christine, you’re so idealistic.”

Recently, I was invited to speak at the Toronto Leo Women's Leadership Conference. And after a long week included delayed flights and poor sleep, I quickly realized within the first 20 minutes of the event that this was by far the most poorly organized event I had attended in my career. I was angry. I started calculating the time and effort I had invested. Yes, my blood was boiling. Thankfully, after a few minutes of letting my mind run, I decided I needed to shift my mindset. I asked myself: "If I am supposed to be at this event at this exact moment, can I get curious as to why?"

I grabbed a coffee and sat at an empty table. Another speaker sat down next to me and we started to chat. And then another. And within a few hours, I realized I was indeed supposed to be there! It was to meet some really remarkable women. 

That day I had the privilege of connecting with powerhouse speakers like Vivian Meraki , Maria Di Giulio , Dr. Chi Quita Mack, LMSW, Glenda Kroll, Pamela de la Flor and many more. Each one bringing her own depth of insight, strength, and charisma to the room.

Despite the technology and time management chaos, we made the most of it. We swapped stories, ideas, and laughter between the hiccups. It was a reminder that when things don’t go as planned, sometimes the real magic happens in the side conversations and shared eye-rolls that turn into genuine connection.

I also had the chance to share some thoughts from my keynote, Too Busy to Be Happy: Growing Your Work-Life Wisdom...which felt perfectly fitting, considering the situation. 😉

To all the brilliant women who showed up, rolled with it, and kept the energy high, thank you. You were the true highlight of an otherwise “educational” experience.

Last week, I had the honour of leading a session on Work-Life Wisdom with an incredible group of women from OMERS.

But the highlight of my day was sharing the same stage with Diana Matheson, a former Olympic soccer player and now the co-founder of Project 8 Sports, the company launching Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league.

Hearing Diana’s perspective on nervousness was game-changing.

She explained that when she felt nervous before a match, it wasn’t a sign she wasn’t ready, it was her body’s way of saying, “This game matters, and you’re prepared.”

She went on to share that her key to success lies in knowing that identity drives actions, which in turn drives feelings. 

Yet most of us have it the other way around where our feelings drive our (re)actions, which ultimately shape our identity.

I found myself reflecting on moments when I’ve let my feelings get ahead of my identity. 

This idea has stuck with me, and I’ll be thinking about it as I plan for a powerful 2026.
