This week I had the pleasure of attending the Women of SaaS Berlin New Year's Reception hosted at EY alongside some of the most inspiring women in the SaaS ecosystem! 🚀 

We tackled a question that's on everyone's mind: Is AI spelling the end of implementation partners, or the beginning of something new? The panel with voices from EY, Snowflake, and DeepL brought sharp, honest perspectives that sparked so many questions and insights. 

However it was the conversations between the conversations that stayed with me most. The energy in that room was a reminder of why community matters... especially in an industry moving as fast as ours.

My first sales job lasted exactly one week.
And it taught me one of the most important lessons about sales.


Choose your environment carefully.

I’ve been working in sales for a few years now and have experienced very different setups. 
Small teams, large teams and even working completely on my own.

My very first real sales job was selling TV subscriptions in a shopping mall. Not door to door but approaching people face to face and convincing them to buy. I was 19 years old.

Let’s just say that experience shaped me.

Getting rejected in person hits very differently than getting rejected on a call.
There was no proper base salary so the pressure was real.

No real team to support me. Just a guy who would randomly show up, hiding behind displays to check if I was actually there working.

My high hopes turned out to be a one week mission. 

Ironically, the commission I made during that week was actually pretty solid. But I knew immediately that this was not the environment where I would thrive.

That job actually scared the sh*t out of me haha. It took a few years before I gave sales another try.

Sales is an incredible entry point for people who might not have a lot of formal experience but have natural communication skills and curiosity about people.

But when you start out the environment you choose matters a lot.

Personally, I would recommend that many beginners start in an experienced sales agency.

Why?
Most agencies rely heavily on cold calling and cold calling teaches you skills that will pay off in a million situations in life and business.

You also usually work on multiple projects and products.
That means learning how to speak to different ICPs, understand different company structures and adapt your outreach depending on the audience.

Over time you start seeing where you perform best.
And once you understand that you can start optimizing your path.

Most desperate sales conversations have one root cause:


A weak pipeline.

When pipeline is thin, every call suddenly has to work.
That’s when sales starts to feel desperate.

Here’s the paradox:

The best way to improve the quality of your sales conversations
is often to increase volume.

There are two types of sales reps.
Type 1:
“I schedule every prospect no matter what.”
Type 2:
“I only schedule when everything is perfectly aligned.”

Most people assume Type 2 has the better conversations.

But the real difference isn’t qualification.

It’s pipeline health.

The math is simple:
More outreach → more conversations
More conversations → more opportunities
More opportunities → more qualified meetings

Sometimes prospects are genuinely interested.

They’re curious.
They’re engaged.
But the timing isn’t right.

When your pipeline is healthy that’s not a problem.

You don’t force it.
You give them space.
You follow up later.

And many of those follow-ups turn into great meetings.

But when pipeline is thin:

You’re behind target.
Every call matters too much.
Suddenly every conversation needs to become something.

That’s when desperation creeps in.

Desperation kills good sales conversations.
Volume creates the conditions for quality conversations.
