Well… this might be the most vulnerable thing I’ve ever put on the internet.


I just published a piece in Nature Careers about burnout, rest, and the quiet ways academic culture teaches us to tie our worth to exhaustion.

If you’re a PhD student who feels pressure to always be tired, busy, and “doing more” - you’re not alone.

It took me a long time to understand that rest is not failure. That being healthy, present, and human is not something you have to earn after your PhD. 

You’re allowed to have it during your PhD. Right now.

I’m still learning this, honestly. It’s hard, but I’m trying.

If you’re in the middle of a PhD and struggling, I hope this makes you feel a little less alone. 

You’re allowed to pause. 
You’re allowed to rest. 
You’re allowed to want a life beyond the lab.

A lot of aspiring PhD students are heading into interview season - here are a few pieces of advice:

1️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝗼
Ask yourself: Can I see myself here for 3–6 years? 

Will I be happy? 
Will I be healthy? 

Fit matters more than people often admit.

2️⃣ 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
That includes student socials and informal events. Show up, be kind, and engage in conversation. 

It’s tiring, but it matters - current students often submit feedback as well.

3️⃣ 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵
Be ready to talk about your research at both levels:

► The big-picture scientific question
► The nitty-gritty details of what you did and why


𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹: 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲. 
It’s a huge accomplishment. Carry that confidence with you. You've earned it.

If you’re a PhD thinking about posting on LinkedIn, here’s my advice for the new year:

1️⃣ 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 - 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀
Be an enjoyable presence online. Share optimism, honesty, and respect. It draws people in and makes your content more engaging (in my opinion).

2️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Who are they? What do they care about? What’s their expertise? Understanding this will guide your tone, level of jargon, and what value you provide.

3️⃣ 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹
Are you building a content library to serve as a personal landing page for employers? Trying to grow an audience? Raising awareness for a cause or business? Knowing your goal helps you set measurable steps and figure out what your metrics of success looks like.


For me, writing on LinkedIn has led to incredible personal insights and professional opportunities. I highly recommend giving it a try ✏️

To all the student entrepreneurs out there - go you 💛

I’ve been building businesses during my PhD for the past three years, and wow… it’s a real sacrifice. 

Time, energy, focus - all constantly being traded and rebalanced.

If you’re in middle school, high school, college, or graduate school and building something alongside your studies, I’m rooting for you. And honestly, I’m rooting for us.

It’s an enriching, exhilarating, and deeply effortful journey - and one that teaches you so much about yourself along the way.

Can we normalize speaking our crazy New Year’s goals into existence? 🎯

It’s scary. It’s vulnerable. You feel like you might fail.

But imagine where the journey could take you. Shoot for the moon and land among the stars, right?

I’ll go first: 

𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴, 𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 10,000 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿. 

Can’t believe I just said that out loud, but here’s to a little vulnerability!

Feels kind of insane - but then I remind myself that there are hundreds of thousands of PhD students and postdocs who could benefit from reading stories of PhDs who have successfully transitioned to industry careers. 

10,000 is just a tiny fraction, and we are almost 3/4 of the way there! So here's to the big goals!
