Is your startup looking to drive innovation and value in the fields of entertainment, fashion, food and art and design? Want to do that in the heart of Japanese pop culture - Shibuya?

Applications are now open for a program in Tokyo that matches startups with major corporations in Japan, to co-innovate on solutions.

The program, called Full Bloom, is organized by innovation hub, SAKURA DEEPTECH SHIBUYA (SDS), located in the center of Tokyo’s pop and entertainment culture. This is an opportunity for a start up based anywhere in the world to testbed their technology and ideas with a Japanese corporation.

I learned about Sakura Deeptech Shibuya and the Full Bloom program on February 16, at Media Day for one of Asia’s biggest tech conferences, SusHi Tech Tokyo 2026 on April 27-29. Japan has been working hard to build an active startup ecosystem, and Japan is starting to see momentum and results.

This is the second year of a major public-private partnership between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Tokyu Land Corporation, and San Francisco-based VC Scrum Ventures. In 2025, 10 startups were handpicked out of 156 applications, of which 9 were from outside Japan. Of those 10, 4 went on to have successful corporate partnerships.

This year, SDS is targeting 10 start ups again, but with a focus on these four areas: 1) Entertainment & Media, 2) Fashion, Beauty and Sustainability, 3) Food & Urban Living, and 4) Art & Design. This is part of SDS and Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s higher level goal of increasing and leveraging Japan’s soft power, and what better place to do that than Shibuya.

The program is approximately 6 months long. If selected, there are a few mandatory touchpoints that require short trips to Japan, but on the whole, the work can be done from your home base. Extended time in Japan will be up to you and the potential corporate partner you work with.

For interested startups, the deadline is end of March, 2026, although it is possible that Scrum Ventures will begin selecting starts up on a rolling basis as the deadline approaches. If you want to be in the top 10, you should submit an application within the coming weeks. 

This is a unique opportunity to innovate in a thriving urban test bed, to gain access to an eager Japanese corporation, to leverage Scrum Ventures, which will help bridge cultural gaps, and make connections for you to the US.
