“If you had stayed in America and worked on Wall Street, you’d have made so much more money.”

Nine years ago my mom was done.
Seventy-eight. Stroke damaged. Ten medications. Nursing-home bound.
If I left her in America, she would have died alone.

So I took her to Thailand.
We cooked real food. We slept. We walked slow circles around the living room.
One prescription at a time, we peeled her life back to something simple.

Four months ago I set a goal that sounded ridiculous.
I wanted her to walk the full loop around our park lake. Two kilometers.
No breaks. No sitting. No quitting.

To prepare mom, her caregiver and driver became her coaches. They pushed her forward a few extra meters each day for months. Just a little bit more each day. My job was to believe she could do it long enough for her to believe it too.

Yesterday was the day.

We all met at the park.
Mom lined up at the start.
An hour and nine minutes later she shuffled across a paper finish line we held across the path.
Champagne sprayed. (Security caught us and told us to put away the alcohol hahaha.)
She laughed so hard. Eighty-seven years old. One continuous walk.
Then she thanked every person who helped her along the years. That moment broke me a little.

Here is what this taught me.

Lesson one: never go backward.
Warren Buffett says the first rule in investing is to never lose money.
In life, the rule is to never lose ground. Hold your line. Protect your progress.

Lesson two: motion beats despair.
You do not need a miracle. You need five centimeters more than yesterday.
Small forward steps, done every day, turn impossible goals into finished stories.

Lesson three: belief scales.
If you want someone to rise, believe in them before they believe in themselves.
That is true in families. It is true in business. It is true everywhere.

Mom walked the lake.
Your biggest goal might not be a lake, but the path is the same. Keep moving. Keep believing. Never go backwards.

We love to read.
I estimate that I have read 3,000 to 5,000 books in my lifetime.
Mom and Dad never made me read.
Maybe they just set a good example.

This photo of me reading with my mother brings back so many memories. 
Books were never a rule in our home - they were a part of life.
A quiet habit that connected us, inspired us, and shaped how we see the world.
Some of the best lessons I’ve learned didn’t come from classrooms or mentors, but from pages that opened up new ideas and emotions.
Here’s to every parent who passes down the love of reading not through instruction, but by example.

There’s an old saying that a mother is our first teacher and mine is still teaching me at 87.

Three days ago, she made it to the top of a hill in Nan. The climb was slow, and the way down even slower. 

It’s almost impossible to reconcile that moment with the memory of her arrival in Thailand nine years ago… right after a stroke.
Back then, every step was uncertain.
Every movement required courage. Every day felt fragile.

Yet here she is, still exploring, still moving, still choosing life with the kind of quiet strength that humbles you.

I guide a lot of students today people navigating career doubts, setbacks, and new chapters ; but so many of the lessons I share, started with her. Lessons like:

• Progress is possible long after the setback.
• Small, steady steps are what real strength is made of.
• Staying active in mind, body, or spirit keeps life vibrant.
• Support can change the direction of someone’s future.
• And it is never too late to begin again.

Watching her on that hill reminded me that transformation rarely looks dramatic.
It’s usually slow and quiet.
But it’s happening one steady step at a time.

I hope her story encourages you to keep going in your own way, at your own pace.

Imagine needing your father’s permission to get married at age 20…

And then imagine your future husband showing up without the two dollars needed for the marriage license…

So your future husband had to borrow it from your father.

That was my mom and dad in 1958.

They were young, hopeful, and starting with almost nothing.

But what they built was everything.

Mom was lucky.
She married a true gentleman.
My dad, David, worked hard, stayed loyal, and loved her for 58 years.

Through every up and down, they made it through together.

Three kids.
Twenty-four years of happy retirement.
A life they could be proud of.

Dad passed away in 2016 at age 82, and I brought Mom to live with me in Bangkok.

She had survived a stroke, but she still had her savings, her dignity, her curiosity, and her quiet strength.

Mom comes from a generation that didn’t talk much about emotions.
She doesn't fill her speech thank yous, but I feel her appreciation every day.

Now she’s 87.
She walks. She fights. She keeps going.
And every time I post a picture of her, I’m reminded of one thing:

A good life is not built from perfect moments. It’s built from steady love, small decisions, and never giving up.

My mom started her marriage needing her father’s signature…
And today, she stands as a woman who lived a long life of loyalty, family, discipline, and resilience.
That is luck — but it is also choice.

If you’re reading this, here’s the challenge:

Ask yourself, what choices am I making today that my future self will thank me for?
Love someone steadily.
Take care of your health.
Plan your finances.
And show up — even when it’s hard.

Because when you reach the later chapters of your life, you won’t be counting achievements.
You’ll be asking one simple question:

Did I build a life I can feel proud of?

Growing up in Hudson, a small town outside Cleveland, I used to think my future was shaped by the place, the schools, and the opportunities around me.
Only later did I realize it was shaped by someone who never said a word about it.

My dad chose chemistry when everyone around him chose “practical careers.”
Heavy textbooks, long lab hours.
Nothing came easy.

He just loved understanding how things worked at their smallest level.

When he finished his PhD, companies started chasing him because he knew something few were willing to spend years mastering.
He studied plastics the way others study music. With logic, curiosity, and patience.

Once he entered the industry, he discovered something surprising.
Sales weren’t really about selling. It was about solving problems.

One day, after a long visit with an automotive manufacturer, he walked in frustrated.
They wanted discounts, but ignored how the material would save them millions in failures.

A mentor pulled him aside and said, “If you make their product stronger, you’ll never need to make your price smaller.”

Everything changed.
He stopped selling features and started proving outcomes.
Engineers respected him.
Factories listened.

And my entire education was quietly funded by the value he created.

He never chased the spotlight. He built a foundation.

We often celebrate the loudest voices in business and forget the quiet experts who make real results possible.
Sometimes their impact shows up years later, in someone else’s opportunity.

So I keep asking myself: Are we trying to be seen…or trying to become someone worth seeking out?

Yoga has transformed my life in a big way.
It changed how I think about health, work, and long-term performance.
Most activities are unbalanced.
Take tennis, for example.
It works one side of the body more than the other.
But yoga brings complete balance. It moves the whole body with control and awareness.

When I hold deep postures, I feel more connected to my body.
And afterwards, I feel lighter, calmer, and more energised.
I discovered it through Hot (Bikram) Yoga.
It was tough, so I set a challenge for myself to go and practice for 70 or 90 days in a row.
Back then, I was working full-time as head of research, yet I still went every single day.
If I knew I could not go tomorrow, I would go twice today.
Finishing those 70 days reshaped my discipline and my mindset.
Over the years, my approach changed.
Hot yoga pushed me harder than necessary.
Now I prefer slow, deep, yin-style sessions.
They give me balance, clarity, and long-term sustainability.
Yoga is one of the strongest lifelong habits I have built, and I genuinely believe young people should bring it into their daily routine early.

If I could only teach one lesson about valuation for the rest of my life, it would be this.
How do you increase the profits of a business, and how do you do it with less capital?
That is the challenge I love most.

It ties directly into free cash flow, which has two components: the core profit of the business, and how much investment we have to make to sustain that profit.

I would love to teach more lessons where we break down free cash flow structures of different companies and industries, helping people truly understand this.

In my own company, CoffeeWORKS, I have tested many formulas, but we ended up focusing on one key metric: free cash flow as a percentage of revenue.
It shows how much of our revenue flows through to free cash flow. If that percentage rises, we are dramatically increasing the business’s value.
That is what excites me. 
And every time someone finally “gets it,” it reminds me why I love teaching this concept in the first place.

People often ask how I balance ambition with peace of mind.
I always start with one idea, and it is to separate stress from pressure.
Stress kills. Stress is the feeling that I cannot do this.
Pressure is simply the need to finish something by a certain time.
Stress comes from doubt. Pressure comes from responsibility.
And knowing the difference changed my life.

So, I rely on two principles.
First, I commit to learning.
I remind myself that I may not be good today, but I can learn tomorrow.
And when I feel real doubt, I step away.
I focus on areas where I can win. That is how I avoid fighting battles that only drain me.

Second, I take my health seriously.
I do not drink alcohol or do drugs.
I sleep early between 8 and 10.
I wake up naturally without an alarm.
I eat healthy, mostly home-cooked food.
I sleep deeply, even if the hours are short and track my sleep with Fitbit.
I walk often and practice yoga regularly.

All of this keeps my stress low and my energy high.
And that is why I can show up every day with clarity, focus, and drive.

As I’ve navigated my career and life, one simple truth has become increasingly clear. All we truly have is TODAY.

It's easy to get caught up in planning for an ambitious, distant future, or stressing over past mistakes. But I've found that the only place we can actually apply effort and make a difference is right now.

I was taught a valuable lesson years ago about the power of a daily inventory. A simple way to check in, acknowledge any missteps, and course-correct. It’s not about perfection; it’s about effort. 

We might not always hit the results we want, but if we honestly did the best we could with the resources and time available today, that's a win.

Our ability to take meaningful action can sometimes fade over time. That's why I'm trying to be more intentional about closing the loop on issues today. The less baggage we carry forward, the more energy we have for tomorrow's opportunities.

Ultimately, our lives are lived one day at a time, and the quality of our future is determined by the quality of our actions right now.

That gap?

Rich countries  especially the U.S. have stronger currencies, deeper bond markets, and more political influence.
They can push rates down whenever they need to.

Emerging markets don’t have that luxury.
If they cut too much, their currencies fall, imports get expensive, and inflation surges.
So they’re forced to keep rates high.

Meanwhile, the U.S. isn’t just reacting to global rates…
It shapes them.
When America cuts, the whole world feels it.

And with the 2026 midterms ahead, a sitting president has one huge incentive. Make the stock market look incredible.

Because a booming market = happy voters = no “lame duck” presidency.

This is why many expect a Trump administration would pressure the Fed to cut rates fast, deep, and maybe even toward zero.

And if that happens… buckle up.

Lower interest rates are rocket fuel for equities:

• Companies pay less interest → higher profits → higher valuations
• Discount rates fall → future cash flows look more valuable
• Bonds lose appeal → more money flows into stocks

If rates drop aggressively, stocks could rise far more than the market currently expects.

Interest rates shape economies.
Politics shapes interest rates.
And together, they shape your portfolio.
